Gold monkey

Advice

Hey guys, I'm starting a long-term campaign soon that requires a backup character present at all times (foreboding, I know) and as I thoroughly enjoy making characters I would like to have three or four, each more ridiculous than the last, because honestly if I die three times without acting like an idiot I deserve to mess with the D.M. by making him deal with something ludicrous. I was thinking of making a vanara bo-staff user for one of these, but I have very little experience making monks and would like some pointers.

tl;dr Any tips on making a vanara monk specializing in a bo-staff?

Sovereign Court

Gold monkey suppose its either a reference to Sun Wukong or Goku either way...Monk funny enough aren't very good at wielding a quarterstaff.

Staff Magus would be a better bet. If you want to stick to monk for some reason, monk of the four winds into aspect of Ki-rin would give you the gold look(nothing special for wielding a quarterstaff tho) or I guess a weapon adept Monk but still nothing too special.

Staff Magus Eldritch Scion, Destined Bloodline

Well, you have several options:

- Treetop Monk is meant to abuse reach with the staff... you can use the long reach + Ki Throw + Improved Trip + Tripping Staff to control the battlefield...

- Sohei is, as usual, the best Monk at damage... you can freely ignore the mount features, and simply enjoy the rare bonus to accuracy it provides... plus you get to use light armor in exchange for WIS-to-AC and fast movement, which makes the first levels much easier.

- Martial Artist is less magical, but it provides a good boost to accuracy and DCs, while giving you feats to up your damage and accuracy. I recommend it?

Any way you go, you might want to take a look at Janni Style for tripping goodness.

If you could convince yourself a quarterstaff is about the same thing, a ninja gets some use out of a double weapon and is acrobatic and all. Also they like charisma rather than wisdom which seems better for what you want.

If you must play a monk, a kata master can do swashbuckler deeds with monk weapons which may be useful for you.

Interesting thoughts, thanks guys!

Qinggong Monk is fun, and a way to get things like Scorching Ray and other spell-like effects.

Then there's always dropping Monk entirely and going Sacred Fist, since you get ACTUAL spells along with your Flurry of Blows.
