Feat Idea "Two Weapon Focus"

Homebrew and House Rules

Here is a feat I have been thinking about for a while. I thought that this might add diversity to two weapon fighting, letting people not restrict themselves to using the same weapon in both hands.

Two Weapon Focus
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually.
Requirement: Two Weapon fighting and +1 base attack bonus.
Benefit: Chose two different light and/or one handed weapons; only one of these weapons can be a shield. You gain the +1 bonus to hit of the weapon focus feat applied to the use of those two different weapons. However unlike weapon focus, can you only gain this benefit while using that specific pair of different weapons together. If you are unable to used the two weapons together you lose the benefit of the feat, even if you still have one of the two weapons able to be used.
Example: A fighter chooses short sword and heavy shield. They must have both those weapons in hand and able to be used as weapons. If one of them is disarmed or rendered unusable as a weapon, they lose the benefit entirely until the hindered weapon is retrieved, fixed, or replaced.
Special: This feat counts as the Weapon Focus feat for meeting all requirements. Losing the ability to use this feat eliminates the benefits of feats (such as weapon specialization), class abilities, etc. it was used for meeting of requirements, the same way as if you lost the ability to use weapon focus. This feat can only apply its bonus to two weapons at any given time.

The idea is good. But I would much rather use weapon groups with weapon focus, spec and such.

Xum wrote:

Agreed, however there are multiple weapons in weapon groups, so there is at least that diversity.

P.S. Also note the special section, weapon specialization can apply to the weapons of this feat.

P.P.S Is the feat balanced in your opinion?

I personally think it's a great idea.
TWF is already a feat-hungry chain. Making it cost less for what amounts to the Weapon Focus chain on two weapons is a good way to add flexibility to martial character options.
I'd continue with TWSpec, Greater TWFoc, Improved TWCrit, and Greater TWSpec.

Thanks!

I just re-wrote it to hopefully make it clearer and less wordy.

Need some last editing.

P.S. About TWSpec etc. I made it so that printing/writing the additional continuance feats were not needed as this feat meets the prerequisites; so I did have those in mind.

Improved TWCrit was in mind as well.

Two Weapon Focus
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually.
Requirement: Two Weapon fighting and +1 base attack bonus.
Benefit: This feat acts and qualifies as the weapon focus feat in all ways except when it is noted otherwise. When you chose this feat pick a pair of weapons that are of different types, but both must be a one handed and/or light weapon. So long as you have both of these weapon able to be used, you gain the weapon focus bonus, and all bonuses that require weapon focus they posses (such as weapon specialization) applied to the chosen pair of weapons. If you are ever left with only one of the chosen weapons able to be used, you lose all the bonus weapon focus and attached feats, class abilities, etc. that they would grant. This feat can only grant its bonus to two weapons at any given turn.
Special: You can take this feat multiple times; each time it is taken it must be applied to a different pair of different weapons. This feat does not stack with the weapon focus feat.

Bold my changes, you could gain the weapon focus bonus just by carrying them on you, same with the other related feats, also cuts down on the words.

The idea is dealing with some abstract, that you are not just sitting there not doing anything with the other weapon. You could be performing faint motions (Not the faint action) with one weapon even though you are only really attacking with the other. I have no problem with them simply being able to use it, but not attacking. They still have two weapons able to be disarmed or disabled and that might need to be replaced rather than one. Do you think this might be a balance issue.

Two Weapon Focus
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually.
Requirement: Two Weapon fighting, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: This feat acts and qualifies as the weapon focus feat in all ways except when it is noted otherwise. When you chose this feat pick a pair of weapons. So long as you are wielding both of these weapons you gain the weapon focus bonus.
Special: You can take this feat multiple times; each time it is taken it must be applied to a different pair weapons. This feat does not stack with the weapon focus feat.

Check this out. I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly what you are saying, cause it's overly complicated. But I gotta tell ya, I would go another way.

Two Weapon Spec (Name to be changed)
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually.
Requirement: Weapon focus in a weapon, two weapon fighting, Bab +1
Benefit: Pick one weapon different from the one you have weapon focus in. Anytime you are wielding this weapon and the weapon you have weapon focus in, any feat you have in either weapon can be applyed to both, like (weapon focus, weapon spec, imp. critical). Those feats cannot stack with each other.

This works better in my opnion and increases the chance to not get screwed when you loose one of the weapons. The only problem I see is that going 2-weapon fighting style is already crap, and extremelly complicated, and this ends up adding ANOTHER feat to the chain, which sucks. But would solve the problem I have with those 2 weapon fighting freaks only using the same kind of weapon, I hate that. :)
Would make Valerus better too. :)

I know the feat was overly complicated. I was just working on simplifying it. Here is what I got. I felt that the feat chain needed to restrict more as some mega TWF chains could be made, such as Two handed Weapons and armor spikes (Or Unarmed Strikes), or weapon and spells with the already powerful Magus. I did had just realized that the word I was looking for was wield too. Here is the full feat chain, including the Improved Critical. The greater chance of getting "screwed over" is the price you need to pay for the greater versatility though. Having one tripping weapon with a good damaging weapon in the other hand can be quite nice.

Two Weapon Focus
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually. Choose two different types of weapons. You can also choose unarmed strike (but not ray or touch attacks) as your weapon for the purposes of this feat.
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Two Weapon Fighting, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: When you chose this feat pick a pair of weapons that are of different types. Both must be a one handed and/or a light weapon. So long as you wield both of these weapon, you gain the weapon focus bonus applied to both weapons.
Special: This feat qualifies as the weapon focus feat. You can take this feat multiple times; each time it is taken it must be applied to a different pair of different weapons. This feat does not stack with the weapon focus feat.

Two Weapon Specialization
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected pair of weapons, Two Weapon Fighting, Two Weapon Focus with selected weapon, fighter level 4th.
Benefit: As per the feat Two Weapon Focus, but instead granting the Weapon Specialization feat bonus to damage with the selected weapon pair.
Special: This feat qualifies as, and does not stack with, Weapon Specialization.

Greater Two Weapon Focus
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected pair of weapons, Two Weapon Fighting, Two Weapon Focus with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1, 8th-level fighter.
Benefit: As per the feat Two Weapon Focus, but instead granting the Greater Weapon Focus feat bonus to hit with the selected weapon pair.
Special: This feat qualifies as, and does not stack with, Greater Weapon Focus.

Greater Two Weapon Specialization
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected pair of weapons, Two Weapon Fighting, Two Weapon Focus with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1, 12th-level fighter.
Benefit: As per the feat Two Weapon Focus, but instead granting the Greater Weapon Specialization feat bonus to hit with the selected weapon pair.
Special: This feat qualifies as, and does not stack with, Greater Weapon Specialization.

Two Weapon Improved Critical
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Two Weapon Fighting, base attack bonus +8.
Benefit: As per the Two Weapon Focus feat, but instead granting the Improved Critical bonus.
Special: This feat qualifies as the Improved Critical feat. You can gain Two Weapon Improved Critical multiple time. Each time you take the feat, it applies to new type of weapon pair. This effect doesn't stack with any other effect that expands the threat range of a weapon.

Greater Two Weapon Focus
Prerequisites: Proficiency...

Seems good to me. But it's not clear to me if the weapons should be the same size or not, what is it?

I would allow it to work with any combination of weapons like armor spikes and two-handed, I don't like how this is possible by raw, but it's a great price to pay anyway cause of the two weapon chain and dex cost.
And I would add that it works when using those weapons in combination, or the same weapon, for versatility. Just a thought.

Don't think this is needed but if you must, here you go.

I like that you can use armor spikes or unarmed strikes with two handed weapons. However, the only balancing factor was that they were different weapons, and feats like this didn't work for both of them. So I would have to disagree on use this feat with that sort of combination, it would make them too good. Your game though.

I don't allow it in my game anyway (two handed weapon with 2 weapon fighting), so, no biggie.

I need to re-add-in this line so that people don't use armor spikes or unarmed strikes and using two weapons in each hand of the same type and have the bonus applied to all three weapons. I know it is an off chance, but with the needed wording they could just not use the armor spikes or unarmed strikes and just stick with the two weapons of the same type all over again.

Still trying to make this a single all encompassing feat, so that new and not thought-of feats and class abilities work as well.

What about double weapons? Could you take this feat and choose, say, the two ends of a gnome hooked hammer as your "two weapons"? Would those who wield double weapons just be out of luck?

Silent Saturn wrote:

Double weapons don't need these feats, as a single weapon focus applies to both ends already...

I was working on a similar feat for my home game. My version which I have yet to put on paper would also allow for weapon specialization, and improved crit to work with both weapons also, while only getting the feat for one weapon.

Both weapons would also qualify for the things such as the weapon master(fighter archetype) that normally restrict you to a single weapon.

Now I would only allow it to work like that if I keep the TWF feat tree..

My other idea was to make TWF a feat that automatically improves at level 6 and 11. In that case I would use the version being worked on here.

Very good point.

I'll get back to it when I am more awake.

Thanks!

Here is what I think is close to the final version.

Two Weapon Focus
Sometimes a combatant focuses on using two weapons together rather than using a single weapon individually. Choose two different types of weapons. You can also choose unarmed strike (but not ray or touch attacks) as your weapon for the purposes of this feat.

There are some wording concerns for this last version.

Proficiency with both specified weapons should replace "proficiency with selected weapon".

There is no restrictions section bolded/highlighted. The most important stipulation of this feat has not been made explicit: at any time you do not have both weapons readied you lose the benefits of all abilities and feats that derive from the use of these weapons. Without this, the restriction is a non-issue. This restriction MUST NOT be bypassable to be remotely palatable.

Here's my concern with this feat: it allows "doubling up" with archetypes and/or prestige classes that are designed around a single weapon. The principle example of this concern is Weapon Master archetype from the APG.

First, thank you for your feed back.

Okay, I will look into it. However you must take into consideration that the individual could just simply use two weapons of the same type in may of these situations, which is exactly what I am trying to change with this feat.

P.S. With a quick check, none of the fighter archetypes require weapon focus as the prerequisites, thus making this feat a non-issue. I do state that both weapons must otherwise qualify for all the bonuses gained. I will now go into each of your concerns and make adjustments.

This has been fixed, thank you.

The wording was changed to wielded. This condition I agree is a vague one, but is the same one used for wizard arcane bound, and rather that re-invent the wheel on this phrase I used one that was already discussed. The status of wield means exactly what you mentioned, but using already existing terms. I did add a few words to make this more definite though.

As stated, I will look over the archetypes and PrCs, that use weapon focus as a requirement.

This works on double weapons?

P.S. Question,

Why would they want this feat?

But normal weapon focus applies to both sides of the weapon as well. So what is the difference.

Have you seen the Two-Weapon Warrior archetype of fighter?

For a fighter going 2-weapons, this largely does what you're looking to do. Instead of applying the fighter's Weapon Training to a weapon group, this archetype just gains bonuses for using 2 weapons.

Yes, that is an archetype, but still does not deal with the massive feat cost for getting the entire weapon focus/specialization tree with two feats.

Ah, it seems that I failed my "thread skimming" check. You're right, that doesn't deal with the massive feat costs. Nor does it deal with the fact that you have to stack mass amounts of dex for TWF... On my TWF, I had to beef up my Dex, and of course my Str for attack/damage, and obviously Con to not splat... which leaves just about nothing for skills.

Hope Turin the Mad will be back to see this soon. I have gone through all the main material printer and this feat shouldn't let things get too out of hand.
