I'm expecting fewer entries this year. The twist and the short deadline probably affected a lot of people's plans. I almost didn't submit myself since I'd been expecting a longer deadline to get something done.

Also expecting most entries to be weapons or rings. Maybe some armor, some rods and staves. And for all the talk of staves being hard mode, I actually think shields are harder to make a superstar level entry. Shields rarely get love.

I'd bet we will see at least one Captain America type shield.

Is it known how many entries were submitted on previous years?

I've submitted an item (not saying when). Got to get an other Marathon voter tag.

A judge told us the first year it was around 850...it has only grown since then but they never have given a total number of entries, nor have they ever shared how many were DQ'd before the voting public sees them.

Marathon..heck this year we should go for CHAMPION!

When one votes for your item, do they need to supply the vote with an explanation?

No, there is no way to make comments about the item during the voting process. You will see two side by side and at the bottom each will have a button. We press the one we like better once the 60 second timer is done counting down. After that two more items appear. There will be a button to pick if you can't decide but it is highly encouraged you DO NOT USE IT, since it doesn't' record a vote for either and then doesn't effect the rankings for either item.

Sometime after the Top 32 are announced a feed back thread will open up where people who want to post their item can. Lots of people on the boards like to offer a critique and suggestions. This is a good way to find out how the voters felt about your submission and why it may or may not have made it to the top of the sorting. It is a great way to get better at game design.

Nope. There's just a button for each item, to indicate which you think is better.

Thank you!

First time, too, and there are some major butterflies in my stomach.

I'm at least hoping to make it to the next round, because I'm fairly good at maps. But, to make it to the end; that'll be a feat unto itself!

I had a feeling... winning this competition will give me enough XP to advance to Designer 3!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

based on trackers we know it was just shy of 1k for 2013, 2014 it was a little shy of 900 there was a little drop off 2nd year of voting.

I considered it, along with various magical firearms replicating Star Wars blasters...

...fortunately, I moved on quickly to better ideas.

I believe those are the post-cull numbers. You'd have to increase those by 20% to get the total number of non-DQ'd entries.

To be fair, if I have to read your item several times for clarity, you do not have what I personally consider SuperStar potential. If your writing is so obscure and obfuscated that I cannot read and comprehend without sleeping with my CRB, it's not going to get my vote, unless the item next to it is worse. Hence the "this item is better" vote rather than "I like this one" vote.

I make no secret that my brand of voting is mechanics light, your item has to be well represented linguistically. I'm not choosing the Top 32 and I would never suggest that those judges use my method for final decision making. If Paizo ever asked me to be an RPGSS Judge, then I would take a different approach. The first round voting is a culling of the herd for the final judging, the Top 32 are not the literal "top 32" from our open voting.

I do blame Owen for dragging me into this. Had he not gleefully announced the 11th-hour twist of item-types, I would have stayed away. But no - with the shift from Wondrous Items to "anything but a Wondrous Item" (not really, I know, but close enough), he convinced me that I was now on equal footing with people who had spent the year prepping a plethora of Wondrous Items to select from for this competition ... we would ALL be scrambling at the last second!

Having sat out for a few years, precisely because the first round has always been wondrous item (there is no way in Hell do I have the time to check a billion existing published items, plus all the previous competition threads, to see if my idea has already been done), and having bent Sean's ear about that very objection, I'm pleased to see the change, even though it also means I am forced to maintain face and enter at extremely short notice.

But I think I do my best work at short notice, and in a narrowed design space; restrictions help to give form and focus to the process. The blank canvas of 'design an Anyshapething, to do Anymagicthing' leaves too much potential for crippling second-guessing and self-doubt.
