So I have been playing Final Fantasy 12 on my ps2 recently and today, as I was in the middle of one of the end game super boss battles my ps2 just completely died.
Good news is I still have the save data on my memory card, bad news is I don't have a ps2 anymore.
Still not the worst video game related disaster I've suffered (worst prolly goes to that time my cousin saved over all four of my saved game files when I was 70 hours into a game)but still pretty annoying.
How about you guys? Ever put a ton of effort into a game you love only to lose the data or your ability to play? Share your tales!

In my college years, with my limited funds, I would buy old, used copies of 16-bit Super Nintendo games, including Final Fantasy 3 (which is Final Fantasy 6 in the Japanese series). That old game would sometimes fail to start, and I would sometimes have to hit Reset a few times to get it started. This seemed only a minor inconvenience, until one day, when it was particularly stubborn about starting. I may have hit Reset a bit too rapidly, because all the games in the battery backup got wiped out. And I had gotten so far!
It was a pity. I played FF2 (or 4 in the Japanese) and Chrono Trigger to completion several times, but I've only ever finished FF3 once. I couldn't bear the thought of trying 3 again and running the risk of losing all my progress again.

>_< Ooooooooouch.
I made sure to buy the two biggest memory cards I could find in the bins when I purchased my PS2 at the used bookstore about a month ago.

I guess it wasn't that bad of loss. The only thing I was really pissed about losing was my Soul Calibur 2 data. Had all characters unlocked, and was only missing a couple of weapons. Most of the other games were either completed games, ones I had barely started, or co-op games with friends that I didn't live near anymore.
The other, more recent incident I've had was my own stupidity. I've grown to rely on autosave far, far, too much. I was playing Fallout 3 several months ago, and had been playing for at least 4 hours straight. Had not saved all day, so the autosave was just writing over itself. It was in the middle of autosaving, when the power went out in the living room, a breaker had been thrown. Flipped the breaker back on, booted back up the game...save corrupted. I said screw it and went to bed. Have had similar things happen with Skyrim, but at least it keeps 3 autosaves.

I had gotten an old nintendo 64 at a garage sale a while back, as well as an old copy of ocarina of time. Had almost beaten it in it's entirety, was right before the last castle. Came back the next day, save file was gone. Absolutely gone. Very frustrating.
I had something similar happen when I played Ocarina on 64 like a year ago, was like 1/3 through the game when the second and third save slot vanished, but the game in the first slot was still there for some reason, so I restarted in the first slot and managed to play to completion.

Currently playing ff6 on the GBA right now, it's brings up such good memories, and it has additional content, super bosses, etc. Highly recommend it if you can get that version of the game.

I always to try to complete RPG at the lowest level posible. Several times that have let me unable to kill the final BBEG. Spcially annoying, in Final fantasy VI I was unable to defeat Kefka before my old PC died.
Yeah, back in the 1990s, I would read on the internet about how people more serious about these games than I was, in an effort to make every possible achievement in them, would advance all the characters to 99th level. It seemed to me like a more impressive accomplishment would be to finish the game with the LOWEST level possible.

I think I've got a silly winner here. I am the proud owner of a slightly corrupted PS2 memory card. Why slightly? It only affects Guitar Hero 3. Well, that's not so bad, right?
It's not that the save data gets lost. It's that the card causes the game to go out of tune. That's right, the guitar stops playing in tune with the backing track.
I spent a few hours verifying that it was, indeed, the card. Not the console, not the disc, not the wireless controller...spent entirely too much time swapping pieces with other people to verify this fact. My wife and I are still known to break out that game from time to time and we always have to swap cards before we start so we don't get the dissonance.
A friend of mine played through FF1 on NES over the course of a summer without shutting off the system for fear of the shoddy saving issue with that game. As I recall, the system crashed somewhere around the Ice Cave.

I go Might & Magic X back in February.
Played it when I had the free time. I had 3 of my 4 characters upgraded and was close to finishing Act 3 when my computer crashed.
Almost total hard drive lost.
I lost everything stored in the C:Drive which had all my games, movies and other programs. Luckily, my gaming downloads were on the E:Drive which was intact.
It has taken me 4 months to download to get the programs re-installed and to catch up on Might & Magic X.
My movies are a total loss.

Ironically, the worst save file loss I had was also with the Might & Magic series, though a bit further back. M&M2, in fact. This was far enough back that all progress was saved on 5.25" floppy disks - floppies that were actually floppy! So, I'd leveled up my party a good long way, and I was in the process of doing all of the class quests. In short, in order to progress in the game, there was an area that was inaccessible unless everyone in your party had defeated a boss encounter. That boss encounter could only be encountered if your party was exclusively made of people from that class. So I had been powerleveling some chumps to help out my main characters against those bosses. I'd beaten four or five before I went back to the inn to save my game. I forget exactly what I did, but my disk drive kerchunked and kerchunked before reporting that the disk was empty.
I'd lost all the work I'd put into beating that game. I never did complete M&M2.

Just a few months ago, I was playing Icewind Dale (via GOG) with my wife, and in the middle of doing some other things, got confused by my power settings (don't even), and ended up thinking my computer was hosed (it wasn't) and reformatting my hard drive. Once I started, I realized that I didn't need to do that, but of course, by then, I couldn't stop it. So... We weren't too far into it, but it was a substantial chunk of play time lost. Still haven't had the inclination to restart it.

The incident that led to us making multiple saves...my hubby and I were both playing the original Persona. I was in a fight sequence and we were getting ready to leave for work. Each of us had only 1 save. I asked him to save my game while I went upstairs to get my shoes...he saved over HIS game!
He was so mad at himself, he stopped playing it.

I know everyone is talking RPGS, but I had an old Madden save file that I had been building on for years go corrupt. All that work building a team gone.
My son once accidentally saved over my Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance game that I was trying to beat on Extreme mode. I have since started saving dual copies of my games just in case.

Demon's Winter. I had played it for a few weeks to get through the drudgery required to get a ship. The world map opened up, I was making maps and having a great time with it. Then, of course, a friend of mine started it up and chose INITIALIZE from the starting menu, even going so far as to choose Yes when asked if he was sure. All of it gone, and I never had the energy to go through the drudgery again.

I have had the worst luck with Dragon Age:Origins.
I played this game for 70+ hours twice, getting as far as the Landsmeet, only to have my computer die, requiring OS reinstallation and hardware replacements. The second time this happened, I upgraded to a newer OS, rebuilt most of the machine, and gave up on DA:O for over a year.
Finally, some two years after buying the game on release, I completed my third play through. I ignored most of the sideplots, took mostly evil/callous options in the name of expediency, and completed the game in 53 hours. It wasn't so much a fun experience as a monument to my bitter determination to just finish the thing.
During this year's Steam Summer Sale that I picked up the Awakening expansion and the various DLCs. Earlier this week, I dusted off my third playthrough's warden(completed in 2011) and took him through the Witch Hunt DLC for a bit of closure. Now I'm considering generating a new character for Awakening...but I'm still too bitter to try playing through the main game with a new character again.

I have a history of bad luck with Bethesda - all the way back to Morrowind (that makes on a total of 6 different computers...). Whenever they release a major patch, an expansion or a DLC, my saves won't work (no one I know ghad that happen). Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3.
The good thing is, I got to try a lot of different characters...

The worst incident of this happening was when I was like 12 or 13 and my dad got me a pirated copy of Ultima 4 for the Apple 2E. Apparently because someone had cracked it I only had 100K moves in which to finish the game. I didn't know this of course and hit move 100K on level 7 of the Stygian Abyss. If you know anything about this game then you can understand why I was rather mad.

I was playing Fallout: New Vegas when I was sick as a dog, and decided too do a mission for the Brotherhood of Steel where you had too retrieve three holotapes from three Paladins. I went for one in the North, in a shelled-out town that was, indeed, still getting blasted. I managed to grab the tape and fast travel away before getting killed and thought it was all good.
Sadly, I travelled too Scorpion Gulch. I was wearing Enclave Power Armour, armed to the teeth with gear from Big MT, and figured I could take out some Radscorpions. Oh no. For some reason they would not die. Not a single one. I literally started nuking them, and still they would not die. Finally they managed to kill me as I tried to run for it, this pack of zombie Radscorpions with no health.
Well, no biggy I figure. I loaded the auto-save from my fast travel...and BOOM! Shell to the head. Apparently I'd fast travelled away nano seconds before a shell hit me. No matter what I did I couldn't escape that shell.
So I checked when I had last saved...I hadn't. Because I was so ill I forgot the basic 'save every mission' rule. A whole night's effort gone in a glitch.
Crap.

I was running through the Elite Four on Pokemon Red. Was at the last one when it just died. My whole gameboy. It was tramatic as a little kid.
Oh man, that reminds me of a similar incident when I was little. I had Yellow and accidentally dropped the Gameboy shortly after completing a quest (I forget which one exactly). The game instantly reset itself, lost its save file, AND lost the ability to save. Never played it again as a result, though I also had Red and Gold shortly after so it wasn't a major loss, all things considered.

I actually made it to the last level (Braniac) on Superman for the N64. For those that know the horror, you know how hard the game is. My 4 page memory card became completely corrupted and I have to wipe the whole thing to make it usable again.
GTA: China Town Wars for DS. I had beaten the game and was unlocking things like finding the secret statues randomly placed in the world. My game corrupted and I can no longer connect online to get the special downloads rockstar made for it for syncing up with them due to Nintendo turning off all Wii and DS online play.

I once managed to get Celes to save Cid from dying.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD THAT IS TO ACCOMPLISH?
At least 4 HOURS OF REPLAYING THE ESCAPE FROM THE FLOATING CONTINENT!
OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!
Then, right when I managed to feed the FAT FRANKENSTEIN F!#~ FACE the right F%@*ING FISH and get on the raft to go to the other town, the g$$ d&!ned SNES decided to misbehave!
I NEVER...EVER...RAGED like I did at that moment. My brother came in and asked what the hell I had done to the SNES and the FFVI Cartriage. I responded that I did justice UPON THEM!

Who here hasn't had a Final Fantasy save erased due to that damned NES cart battery? It took so long to finally beat Chaos...
I got to the point on my NES it didn't even like to start. I played it iron man style: one playthrough non-stop, hoping it wouldn't cut out. Getting it for other consoles/hand-held was a blessing.

Probably because I didn't play it on the NES.
I played it on the PS1.
HEATHEN!! BLASPHEMER! INFIDEL DEFILER SCUM!
OK, just kidding. Still...you should go and do it, then you can come back. I think the FF 1 problem is the price of admittance to this thread lol
