Huh, looks like he did get the card back somehow, popped up again this episode.
Hell of an episode, I thought it really helped develop the character. Showed that while he can be a callous bastard, he does care for people. And while he'll do what he has to no matter what it takes, it still hurts like hell when it costs those around him, even if it's their choice to pay the price.
The character of Manny (the angel) is starting to grow on me a little bit too.

Lamashtu is indeed based on real world mythology - specifically ancient Sumerian, where she did have (negative) influence over birth. Her animosity with Pazuzu, who was also from ancient Sumerian mythology, is also based on on real-world myth.

The reference to Lamashtu being Eve's sister may be a reference to Lilith, Adam's FIRST wife according to Jewish tradition. (A reference in the sense that Lamashtu may have had some influence on the development of the character Lilith in Jewish mythology).
And now you know!
Edit: Added Lamashtu+Lilith reference.

Keep in mind also that the Eden myth specifically references that there were other people outside the Garden, but that the Garden was where Yahweh made his first people.

Good episode. Strong midseason finale.
If you listen to what he's saying when he's confronting Lamashtu, he's actually trying to figure out which of Eve's sisters it might be. Lilith and a number of others are mentioned before Lamashtu.
Can anyone recall if they ever drew a link between Eve and Lamashtu in any of the Vertigo titles, Hellblazer or otherwise? I remember in Lucifer that Lilith's brood of Nephilim played a big role, but can't remember if Lamashtu ever popped up.

Pathfinder Lamashtu is based on the real Lamashtu. (To the point where even the quote in Inner Sea Gods that starts her chapter is actually a real quote -- despite being somewhat dissonant with PF cosmology, as Lamashtu in PF is in no sense a daughter of Heaven, but the Rule of Cool trumped continuity in that case.)
The Constantine mythology about her being Eve's sister is not consistent with most of the mythology about her, as Seventh Seal notes.
Although it's worth noting that Lamashtu is possibly the same word as lamassu, which refers to those Assyrian winged bull-dudes, or more specifically to a protective spirit, and in some cases gets used specifically for female protective spirits (a male spirit was a shedu).
So, whether you want to interpret that as Lamashtu originally being yet another goddess who had insufficiently good PR to remain in the deity category as cultures changed and ended up being a demon/monster (see also: Ashtoreth, Astarte, Tiamat, Nammu/Naamah, etc.), or that the ancient Mesopotamians didn't really distinguish between "good" and "bad" when it came to deities, lumping them all into the "must be placated" category (You did not touch me, why am I startled? No god passed this way, why am I paralyzed?/looking to Pazuzu for help against Lamashtu, etc.).
If it's the former, however, it's plausible, especially when you consider that Eve herself may have originally been a deity. Athirat, an Ugaritic goddess (likely the same as the Canaanite Asherah) was also called Chawat. As Semitic languages evolved, the w sound started getting pronounced as a v in some contexts, and the t at the end of some feminine names started getting dropped or softened, and Chawat becomes Chava, which is the Hebrew transliteration of Eve's name.
So, to the best of my knowledge, there's no actual support for the idea of Lamashtu and Eve ever having been actual sisters, but in the sense that they may both originally have been goddesses worshipped in the same area whose images fell into less reputable forms, it's enough to make it a cool "This is the real story: they were sisters!" mythology for a show or comic.

Not that I can recall, though it's been far too long since I last read through that excellent series. I just hope they hurry up and get the pilot for Lucifer going; I think it would be an excellent counterpart to the Hellblazer show (if they get renewed). I'm not sure how well it will work out on FOX, nor if they'd ever be able to do any kind of crossover between the two shows, though.
(EDIT: I want to say that there were relatives of Lilith's besides just her children, the Lilim, introduced, but not Lamashtu to the best of my recollection. A brother, possibly?)

Looks like they're shopping around to give the show a new home. I think they should look to a place where another DC property is doing very well and give Netflix a try. They won't have to dance around network censors that way and they can really put a Hellblazer feel into the show. It would also help if they diverted a bit from the "monster of the week" format they settled into for most of the first season.

As I said on facebook.
"Hi, we're ABC, We've a pair of alternating successful superhero shows."
"Hi, we're the CW. Better still, we've two, and soon three shows for our TV universe."
"Hi, we're CBS. We've a new Supergirl series coming out, and would be more than happy to cross over with the CW."
"Hi, we're NBC... We cancelled Constantine."

Er, no, not DC. My brain is obviously on the blink. Did not mean DC. The other points still stand.

Well bugger.
Let's hope some other good channel picks it up. It wasn't a perfect adaptation of the comics but it got better as it went along. It was hands down the best comicbook TV show going.
...I strongly disagree it was the best comic show on TV. That honor probably goes to The Flash right now.
Still, it was worth watching, and deserves to continue. Came out as better than Gotham, and the most recent season of Arrow if we're being honest.

If we mean TV as broadcast/cable, yeah. Definitely the Flash.
If we mean television as a short episodic format, then it's Daredevil.

You know what else is a real quote? There's a line in Dogma where Metatron, played by Alan Rickman tells the Last Scion that whenever you're hearing God's voice, you're hearing Metatron because hearing the actual voice of God would make you explode. He then says "We went through five Adams before we figured it out." As much as it sounds like a line written for Rickman's snark, that's how the story does go in the Kaballah.
