15 point pally

Advice

I need to build a pally with only 15 points to spend and only core races. A couple of questions for the brain trust. A. What race? B. Should I multi-class? I envision being both the back up or main healer and also having to tank. All archetypes are available. Thanks!

A. When in doubt: Human.
B. When in doubt: don't multi-class.

Suggestions:

Human
Str 16 (14+2)
Dex 10
Con 14
Int 8
Wis 10
Cha 15

lvl 4 boost goes to Cha, all other boosts to Str.

Feats: Power Attack and Fey Foundling.

Pick up the heaviest armor you can, and two hand a big weapon.

For multiclassing, generally the answer is no. Usually it is not worth the delayed progression to your key abilities. However, if you find yourself in the role of main healer, it may be worth it to take a 1-4 level dip into Oracle (Life Mystery). The key here is the Life Link Revelation, which basically gives 1 ally per oracle level fast healing 5, by transfering 5 damage a round to you, which you can then heal as a swift action with lay on hands.

Another good option for initial feats is Fey Foundling and Noble Scion for CHA to Initiative. Getting Power Attack later hurts but not that much.

I hadn't thought about going low dex, but with heavy enough armor it's definitely doable. I was thinking about Fey Foundling. I was also thinking about Tribal Scars for extra HP's and more mobility.

Paladin of Sarenrae
10 14(16 after race) 14 10 8 15
human is ideal
Weapon Finesse and Dervish Dance are sound choices for feats, and Fey Foundling also.

Do not multiclass.

IF your DM will allow it, some will some won't. You can get a weapon with "guided" enchant that is based on Charisma instead of Wisdom.

Also Fey Foundling at level 1, Greater Mercy (I think is the right name, the one that ups LoH by 1d6 if no mercy needed, Extra Lay on hands, and the feat that lets you res by blowing 10 LoH.

Warrior of the Holy Light, Hospitaler, Human.

Grand Lodge

Oradin Build will allow you to be less MAD.

Take a level in Oracle, and take the Lore, Lunar, or Nature Mystery.

Best advice? It's paladin, not pally.

I am going to wipe that god-aweful 'pally' slang from people's lexicon if it kills me!!! :)

You don't talk about wizzies, rangeo's and sorcies, do you?

Sheesh!!!!!

Sheesh!!!!!

Color me bad, wit' Rouge and Fits, for the Wizzie be blastin', Pally be Smiting, Clerz be on da' healz, and Barbie be tankin'.

Shadow Lodge

Peesonally I'd go aasimar angle kin +2 str and cha, alter self will add another +2 to str and allow access to arcane strike, which is a decent feat, and overall the race is quite thematic
Alternatively, there's human, as previously mentioned, or Nagaji or certain types of Dhampir, though those last two come with stat penalties

This is very solid advice! This will give you a durable paladin that's pretty potent in any melee battle. I have some other suggestions that are a little more specialized, but you might find pretty fun.

  • Halfling or Gnome, Mounted Paladin - Grab a lance and poke things with it for maximum damage. Minimum strength 14. Halflings and gnomes are better because they can ride medium-sized mounts, and because come on, it's hilarious.
  • Hospitaler Archetype - trade some smites per day for a supply of channels distinct from your Lay on Hands, plus a healing aura at 11th. Good if you're doing lots of healing but don't want to multiclass.
  • Dragon Paladin - become the dragon of justice by going Paladin 4/Sorcerer 1/Dragon Disciple X. Much worse at healing, and you'll have to be wary of spell failure %, but you get strength boosts and sorcerer spells which is pretty dandy.
  • The Silly Avenger - As Revaar's suggestion, but go Half Elf with Ancestral Arms and grab the silliest weapon you can think of. Smite your foes with a Gnomish Battle Ladder or a harpoon or something.

Good luck! Please don't just be lawful stupid mcburlyguy unless that's actually the character you want to play - there are many, many ways to RP a Paladin, even with the same stats and feats. Check to see if your GM will let you be the paladin of a chaotic god like Cayden Cailean, or a neutral one like Gozreh - though even between the paladins of Erastil, Sarenrae, and Iomedae there would be big differences.

Yeah, I've decided to go halfling to keep my mount useful and I'm pretty sure I'll be using the Hospitaler archetype.

No, I do talk about the Wiz and Sorc though. There isn't much of a consensus between games for the archer classes, though. You've also got the Barb.

:D

Hmm, halfling huh!

As the hospitaler I'd try to fit in fey foundling as your first feat if you can swing it!

My stat array with 15 points would be
S 16 (14)
D 12 (14)
C 12
I 7 (7 and 8 is pretty much no difference)
W 8 (charisma and save and strong will, dumping Wisdom is a wash)
C 15 (17)

But, what I would do is probably take my first level as Bard (Dawnflower Dervish) to get free dervish dance(even though I DESPISE the scimitar) and I'd build like this:
S: 12 (10)
D: 16 (18)
C: 12
I: 7
W: 7
C: 14 (16)

Good point - I forgot about the equally dopey Wiz, Sorc and Barb, but they are on the Official 'Dumb Game Slang Terms That Need to Stop' list too!

Good lord people! Is it really that hard to just type wizard, sorcerer, barbarian and paladin???? :/

Scarab Sages

I run a gnome paladin mounted on a a boar for maximum effectiveness and fun.
Gnomes make great paladins.

Hospitaler is not my favorite archetype; depending on level it may not actually be more/as effective at healing than core paladin since hossies get their channel at level -3.

(Could not resist childish urge to antagonize Marc with even stupider slang...)

I blame MMO, and texting too much.
