Can Alchemists use Metamagic Feats on their extracts?

Rules Questions

It's a simple question. I know that extracts aren't exactly spells, but they count as spells for some game factors as well. So can an alchemist use, say, an Extend Spell metamagic feat to make an Endure Elements Extract that lasts longer but uses a higher-level extract slot?

No. And they can't benefit from Metamagic Rods, either.

Not with house rules. I don't feel it would break anything or strain the imagination to allow it, but they have enough tricks up their sleeves that we don't need another case of "transparency" between the types of magic. Except in a culture of heavy optimization, almost all of the classes are fine as-written.

Alchemists need metamagic swizzle sticks.

I second the swizzle sticks.

The only metamagic feat I can think of that would make any sense to apply to alchemist extracts would be the extend metamagic feat.

Metamagic Mixers! Just give it a few shakes! ;)

I've known GM's who instead of metamagic rods, made metamagic hole beads. (think ball bearing but with a bunch of holes going through it at various angles, like the replacement reef stuff people make)
He just had it so you drop the bead in the bottle when you brewed it.

I've always prefered to think of them as metamagic pez. Makes three pezzs to add into the formula as you make it.

I'd be okay with Alchemists getting a Discovery that acts like Quicken Spell.

"1/day for every 4 Alchemist Levels, you may consume an extract as a Swift Action. Because of this haste, you spill some out and can't drink the entire thing. If the duration of the Extract is anything greater than instantaneous, its duration is halved, and regardless of duration the Alchemist Level of that Extract is treated as 2 AL lower than at its preparation; if this means that the resulting AL is lower than the minimum needed to create that Extract, that Extract is wasted and you gain no effects of it."

Something like that.

Even though an alchemist can't do metamagic extracts, metamagic potions actually can be made. Whether or not the alchemist can make them alone with his formulae or not is unclear (I'm tempted to say no), but a real caster should be able to cooperative craft it with him.
