Valkyrie: Witch or Diviner

Advice

Greetings Fellow Gamers,
I was looking at building a Norse-themed rival adventuring party for my players to interact with.

I've got Ulfrydyr, the Wolf-rider (cavalier)
Dovahk, the Skald (Bard)
Astrid, the Shield Maiden (Fighter)
and Lenneth the Valkyrie (

Lenneth's going to be an Eldritch Knight, but I can't decide between Witch, or Diviner. What do you think?

Very Respectfully,

Valkyrie sounds to me like it's best implemented as an Oracle. Moderate-to-good combat abilities, spiritually-inspired spellcasting, and a good complement for the party.

Note, that this is assuming you stick close to cannon, which means that valkyrie are the divine messengers of the All-Father, collecting the bodies of the noble slain to be brought to the festhalls. That's not going to be an Eldritch Knight, so if you want that route, you may want to consider the flavour the title carries.

I vote for Oracle as well.

I thought the valkyries were the wolfriders?

If I could do Oracle and still qualify for Eldritch Knight, I would probably go that route.

I could add an Oracle of the Allfather as a 5th member.

I agree that battle oracle would fit be IMO more fitting for a Valkyrie than an Eldrith Knight.

However, if you want advice on building an Eldritch Knight, I'd say it most depends on what good mental stat you want her to have.

Valkyries were spirit battle maidens who took slain warriors (einherjar) from the battlefield to Valhalla.

Mounted Dual Lance Pounce Barbarian.

Why not Hellknight Signifer, or Rage Prophet, or even Dragon Disciple, instead of Eldritch Knight?

Some might need a little reflavoring, but seem more fitting.

I'd probably go Angel-Blooded Aasimar (with the two feats to give her wings eventually) Battle-Oracle, yes. The All-Father's sacred weapon should be a spear, by the way, used either one- or twohanded.

An alternative take would be a human oracle of the ancestor mystery. Very different flavour, but I think quite stylish. I would likely focus on the longsword in that case.

I see them as Warpriests for some reason. Maybe because all the abilities seem to fall into place. A battle oracle would also fit.

Battle Oracle is the best choice for me too. If you want an Eldritch Knight, a Paladin/Celestial Sorcerer should rock.

What exactly do you want from Eldritch Knight?

How about a Skirnir magus? They are pretty much designed with Valkyries in mind.

Grand Lodge

The Eldritch Knight is now just the poor man's Magus.

More or less.

Holy vindicator is the divine eldritch knight. It is quite fitting for a shield maiden

In the 3e Deities and Demigods, Valkyries were statted as Paladins, for what it's worth.

If you want to go EK you could do worse than White Haired Witch 2/ Barbarian 10/ EK 8. I don't know if you want an Aasimar natural attacker, but EK is basically a prestige class for people with SLAs or very subpar.

9th level spells are NEVER a poor man's anything.

I still love the EK.

Grand Lodge

You know, if allowed, the ACG Warpriest could be quite fitting.

Actually, i think an Ancestor Oracle would be perfect. Refluff ancestors as fallen warriors, and it's perfect for a Valkyrie / Chooser of the Slain.

I agree with others that a Divine class is likely better for a Valkyrie than an Arcane one, or a Skirnir if going Arcane...but that said:

Diviner (Scryer Subschool) lets you go Fighter (Lore Warden, because why not?) 1/Diviner 1/Eldritch Knight 10 and then on into whatever you like, and is thus by far the best option for an Eldritch Knight build where you're already considering Diviner.

Valkyrie's weren't necessarily magic users in norse mythology, nor were they...people, that adventured. This is a similar build challenge to trying to make a low level angel for a PC. I would suggest a Rage prophet build, Oracle of Battle for fluff reasons, or even a paladin.

Also, I'd reconsider the name lenneth, it's a really cute homage to the Valkyrie Profile games, but...it's not norse. I'd suggest a variation of Freya.

I like hexes a lot. They never run out....against different targets. A fighter 1/witch 5 would have 3 before going into EK. That doesn't count the Extra Hex feat.

Even if you were trying to replicate Lenneth Valkyrie from the Valkyrie Profile series, Eldritch Knight is a poor fit. Lenneth could only cast arcane spells in VP because of how the system worked. In VP2 she cast what could be entirely described as divine spells (Guard Reinforce, Heal, Invoke Feather, Might Reinforce, Normalize, Sap Power, Spell Reinforce, Dampen Magic, Sap Guard, Reflect Sorcery).

Though I will agree that she is some kind of divine gish with probably only 6th or 7th level spells. She was not a Mage after all and never had the casting power of one. Going Oracle seems more thematically correct than Cleric, though she does wear heavy armor typically, Oracles are still proficient with medium, and if you're gishing you can pick up the heavy in any number of ways.
