Miniatures

Advice

What's a good website to go to where I can find a great variety of Miniatures?

I'd like to find a medium sized Air Elemental that doesn't look lame, a medium sized Lion, and/or a medium sized Monk.

http://www.fantization.com/ (good Sales on a regular basis and good selection)

http://www.miniaturemarket.com/ (good sales on a regular basis and decent selction, timely shipping and good customer service)

http://www.coolminiornot.com/ (good selection and occasional sales, good customer service and very fast shipping)

http://ironwindmetals.com/d/ (never used but is what old ral partha turned into basically)

http://www.reapermini.com/ (reaper is probably the biggest and most well known producer of miniatures that is still alive and active; they rarely have sales or deals although if you order a lot they will ship for free. Also they don't do high cast so the miniatures aren't outrageously awesome but are still pretty dang nice. They also offer the bones line which is cheaper then metal)

http://www.thewarstore.com/ (decent selection but problems keeping their site up to date. AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR REALLY REAL!!!!)

Miniature market and fantization also offer pre painted miniatures although I have never looked at the selection they have because I don't buy pre painted. Every other source I have given sells primarily unpainted miniatures. (please be aware that pictures of the model that are painted are a demonstration picture and is not an accurate representation of how the miniature will arrive....because the one you get will be unpainted and may also come in mulitple parts whihc will require assembly)

Wow. What an excellent response. Thank you so much Mswbear. I hope I find what I desire :)

Games Workshop has sets of figurines, in case you wants to stock up on a bunch of orcs, goblins, skeletons, etc. However, they are expensive.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything from Games Workshop sight unseen at this point. It's fine if you can look over the actual mini you're going to buy, but I think their quality control has gone downhill over the last few years. I've seen so many casting problems that I don't order from them online anymore.

I use coolstuffinc and miniaturemarket a lot. Trollandtoad has Horrorclix and the older Mage Knight figurines that you can re-base (if you're crafty). I've also scored some great deals on eBay.

Paizo also has over 4,000 items in their 'miniatures for roleplaying' section.

I haven't used the website. There are a few stores in my area, so I use those.

Their finecast line of resins are terrible as far as QC goes, plastic miniatures on the other hand keep getting better and better. The newer releases have had less flash, mold lines that are easier to clean up, and generally fit together better than older plastics. I think they make some of the best models on the market, but you do have to pay a premium for it.

I have bought the reaper line (resin polymer) and they are exceptional. Just don't forget to soak them in warm soapy water first before you paint them. :)

They even have the archetypical goblins from We Be Goblins! I mean how cool is that?

I'll take that into consideration; I'd been avoiding the plastics because of the finecast QC issues, but I really like a lot of GW's sculpts, so I'll give them a try. :)

Plastics are usually fine from GW. And they seem to have finally twigged that Finecast isn't working and are phasing it out, or so I'm told. They also have a decent, if no longer great, customer service team and replacement policy. So buying from them is usually OK.

I avoid them 'cos they've been horrible bullies the last few years and have sent me from being a games workshop stockist to not even wanting to play there products.

To continue with the derail :)

I'm guessing he's had the same experience that several dealers I know also have experienced (not to mention players.) GW has a great product, but support is very important. A few (or in some cases more than a few) bad customer service experiences can sour an attitude, no matter how good the product is. Add in the premium price and that combo can be for many a tipping point, especially when there are so many other companies waiting in the wings with their alternatives.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I have had exceptional customer service from Reaper. They responded positively and quickly to any questions I had. One of my friends had one mis-cast from her kickstarter purchase (1 mini out of say 400) and they shipped a replacement with no hassle at all. My kickstarter bunch (about as many) didn't have 1 QC issue. She also ended up with another 300-400. So between our 1,000+ resin minis...we have 1 mis-cast. That's a good enough sampling for me.

Not sure if it been mentioned but http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/heroforge/customizable-3d-printed-table top-miniatures is funded and will be hopefully ready to roll for Christmas time.

Edit: technically not funded yet due to the fact that they don't get the money till the kickstarter is over...

Basically, Games Workshop went nuts a while back and started suing everyone. Fansites were told they had to remove all copyrighted images or get sued, other companies that made parts you could use with Games Workshop models were sent ceased and desist letters, and such.

The three examples that stick in my mind are;

- Blood Bowl. The game was essentially kept alive by a fan, who even worked on the rules for free. Games Workshop even asked him to update the rules when Blood Bowl was being made into a video game...and then sent a nasty letter just before release, telling him to never mention working on the rules again and that his name would not be in the actual release. Classy.

- Did you know Games Workshop owns Space Marines? Apparently they thought they did, and sent a cease and desist order to an author who had the words in a title of there book...which was giving part of it's profits to charity. Yeah.

- Chapterhouse Studios. Games Workshop sent them a cease and desist letter, demanding they shut there business, destroy there stock, hand over there molds AND pay a large sum of money in damages. Chapterhouse Studio, alas, had a pro-bono legal team helping them. Turns out Games Workshop can't actually do a lot of what they've been doing, and it took two years of fighting in court before it happened. It ended very badly for Games Workshop, as it made it very clear what third party people could do.

It also revealed that Games Workshop believed they owned the trade marks and copyrights on just about everything ever made.

IIRC the author got a ruling from a judge in her favor, because the term space marine had been around longer than games workshop.

So GW is turning to EA Games?
