merciful vs compassionate

Advice

Shadow Lodge

I managed to get one of the nifty gencon boons for Custom Order. It lets me buy enchanted ammo in lots of 10 instead of 50. And I'm debating what to set it on.

Something I've seen come up a few times in PFS is the need to take a baddie alive. Typically this goes very poorly. Especially with gunslingers like the character I'm using this on, but also with big guys with big crit multipliers.

So, I'm looking at something non-lethal. Best ways seem to be Merciful, or Compassionate.

merciful:
A merciful weapon deals an extra 1d6 points of damage, but all damage it deals is nonlethal damage. On command, the weapon suppresses this ability until told to resume it (allowing it to deal lethal damage, but without any bonus damage from this ability).

compassionate:
A compassionate weapon has the power to save a foe from the brink of death.

When a successful hit from a compassionate weapon would bring a creature to –1 or fewer hit points, that creature is automatically stabilized. This ability can be suppressed at will as a free action.

Merciful will drop them faster, but runs the risk of overflow if you hit them too hard.

Compassionate on the other hand, will guarantee they survive - but only if you land the dropping blow. If you deal your damage but not enough to drop her, then someone else finishes her, it won't help any.

Or do people have other recommendations for small lots of enchanted ammo? I was planning to put this on my level 9 gunslinger/inquisitor. Do I still need to worry about taking people alive at that point? Should I apply it to something lower level?

Compassionate does not guarantee survival, it only helps if you drop their hit points somewhere between -1 and -Constitution.

Meanwhile, the amount of nonlethal damage required to kill someone is truly excessive. I would be impressed if you could kill someone with nonlethal by accident after the first few levels.

Ok, thanks.
