filigreed cell phone of camping safely and trap springing
Didn't you mean... filigreed gold coin powered cell phone / swiss army tool combo of camping safely and trap springing favored by lady campers from the Tetons about 1700 years ago used exclusively to create wavy radiant hair styles?

You can use Golarion specific content in RPG Superstar entries, correct?
You sure can, even in round 1, but make sure you get it right - the voters will loudly point inconsistencies out, so be very careful that what you use is up to date and correct.
Things to avoid though are third party references, they are usually specifically excluded in each rounds rules, but on the off chance, it's best to avoid them unless a round specifically mentions a product.

I'd like to add that while it is acceptable, blatant pandering to the setting can be a negative in a lot of people's books. My first item barely got through, and one of the negatives was that it was so in-your-face Calistria-themed.
It's much safer (and arguably better) to make a setting-neutral item, for several reasons:
1) You can trip up on the lore and people will criticize you for not doing enough homework (as mentioned).
2) A lot of people DON'T KNOW THE LORE, and when they're making split-second voting decisions, it will only serve to confuse them.
3) It may make the item unsuitable for many campaigns in Golarion, or for all campaigns in different settings. Much better to have it flavorful, but generic, so that it can be used in many settings.
In short, if you're going to make a Golarion reference, make it subtle enough so that those familiar with the setting will spot and appreciate it, but that those who are not will just think you are giving it a cool description. Best of both worlds! :)

I may even go ahead and purchase all the products that you have to your name, just so that I can further torment you.

Last year, I read a post by someone who was underconfident after seeing the competition, that you get better after doing this for a couple years. I then said, mine was so much better than in past years to comfort them.
I said it. I didn't even think about it. Then after voting for a good long time and not seeing my item, I looked at my post again and said "Oh shoot (other word goes there)" and a few other things.
Needless to say this is a sad example of what little constitiutes 'talking about it'. I felt really, really stupid.
I couldn't even bring myself to look at the contest I felt so bad. Thus the Glittering Dust of Giggling Girlishness died.
Ouch. But yes, the takeaway is definitely to never ever talk about anything, ever. Even saying something like, "I got my idea while I was walking through the forest," can be taken as discussing the item. Play it safe.

Hey Vic, I noticed the article at Publishers Weekly says the contest closes March 1st and it does mention the round format, but it doesn't mention that the entries for the first round have to be submitted well before March 1st. An edit to that article might save a bit of frustration for a few newcomers.

I'm confused. If all you said is that your item was better than in previous years (i.e. that you improved as you practiced), I don't think that got you disqualified. You can't identify your item, since they want to keep the anonymous factor so it remains a contest of skill vs. popularity, but saying something as innocuous as your item was better than in years past shouldn't have been a problem.
Jeff Lee |
Yeah, not seeing your item while voting doesn't mean it was disqualified. I voted several hundred times before I saw my item for the first time, and only saw it twice more in a thousand-plus votes. Likewise, just when I thought I'd seen all the items, new ones would pop up. There was at least one item in the top 32 that I didn't recall seeing at all during my time voting (doesn't mean I didn't see it, but I didn't see it often enough that I remembered it.)

The voters act like sifters, getting rid of the dross and keeping the best items. Last year, the judges said 89 items significantly voted higher and they chose from among those.
There were 2 culls last year, dropping a significant number of items that were voting consistently low. Not to mention the items that were removed for violating contest rules.
No number was given for how many items were submitted, but I think voters were guessing in the 600-800 range. I think the number was probably closer to 900 based on my notes. But that doesn't count entries that might have been auto-disqualified.

I could be way off, but I am pretty sure the pun intended here was that he was shocked that the Glittering Dust of Giggling Girlishness MUST have been disqualified because of his innocuous comment. Because there is NO WAY an item as awesome sounding as the Glittering Dust of Giggling Girlishness could EVER be eliminated, other than the judges MUST have removed it from the competition. It is, in fact, the only explanation.

I saw this item! It was so cool, those coated become so full of happiness that anyone else had to save or become a grump. I suspect the customer care bears, in panic at their happiness secret being revealed to the world, pulled it from the competition.
So, as Cosmo normally gets the blame for everything, I am going to proclaim Cosmo innocent of this crime and point the finger firmly at Sara Marie, chief instigator of all things girly! :P

Also, going off LeBlanc's post, the voting only happens in the first round, the Wondrous Item round. The voting process serves to generate a list of higher-quality items for the judges to peruse so that they don't need to skim through hundreds and hundreds of submissions.
In later rounds, since the number of submissions is 32 or less, the judges read each entry and select who advances and who does not.

True Neutral. It cares not for anything, save the intensity of your squirming. DC 20 Will save to overcome. Must make a new will save every time the contest is teased again. Play close attention to circumstantial bonuses, such as work deadlines, personal matters, or anything that can provide an adequate distraction from the anxious anticipation.
Anticipation is non-gendered, True Neutral in every way.

2013 banner's gone, with a note the new page is coming up later today (which we already knew, of course)...
Looking forward to seeing what Round 2 is, and if Round 3 will again be monsters (I assume so, since honestly that seems like a bit more challenging for developers than an NPC/villin, even though I enjoyed those rounds too).

I'd advice against sending the item immediately. Sit on it for a while. Read the message boards. At some point, someone's gonna say something that might make you notice a mistake or rethink a couple of decisions about your item, and then you are going to regret being hasty.
So, yeah, control your anxiety. ;)
