phrases: Heroes and monsters

These are all actual lessons and phrases.
(I'd like to see some of these philosophy put in the game.

"To defeat a monster, give it what it wants, and then run like hell."
"A monster feeds, and then it grows. And then it wants more. Until eventually when there is nothing left to consume, it consumes itself."

"A nation without heroes is a cursed land."
"A Martyr and a hero are the same word."
"Heroes are the first to die."
In ancient times, "Heroes did not advertise."

Do good deeds in secret.

If the penalty for committing a crime is death, who dares be a criminal?

When you go after the king, make sure you kill him.

Warfare is about being as evil as you want to be. -Napolean

Call your enemy what you are. And always tell the exact opposite of the truth. -Vladimir Lenin

The illegal we do immediately, the unconstitutional takes a little time. -Henry Kissinger

He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.

Money, power, fame: useful tools that become monsters unregulated. The more we have, the more we want. The more we get, the more we need. The fault is not in the tools, but in our addictions.

Oh, if we are going to include our own quotes:

"I will not deal with the Devil or an Angel, because they both wear the same face, make the same promises, and want the same control" ~ Bluddwolf

From a Chaotic Neutral perspective, I see Paladins (LG) and Overlords (LE) to be an equal threat to freedom, or equally desirous of exerting control over others by force if necessary. In fact the path from one to the other is shorter than many might believe (Especially LG to LE).

Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter'd with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war

~ Anthony in Julius Caesar

I'd love a source for the Napoleon quotation above; he said many things but that really does not sound like one of them.

That was a fun series. A few months ago, much of it was added to the NLS audiobook library for people with vision issues. The BARD site is unfortunately offline right now due to the House of Rep's confusion over which branch of the government gets veto power or the ability to declare something unconstitutional, but I think I have them all downloaded already, so I'll be rereading them soon. :)

I am the void.
I am the end of all things.
Everything shall seek me out.
You. This planet. The universe.
All shall eventually seek my embrace of oblivion.

Hmm, I feel like these quotes are drifting ever so slightly away from the stated topic... :P

A little closer to on-topic:

Princess Evie: I'm Evie.
Deathstalker: Deathstalker.
Princess Evie: Deathstalker? Is that your first name or your last name?

Princess Evie: Oh, so you rob from the rich, and give to the poor?
Deathstalker: No, I rob from the rich, and pretty much keep it for myself.

There were such things as Dwarf gods (...) they'd seen the need for gods as a sort of supernatural equivalent of a hard hat. Besides, when you hit your thumb with an eight-pound hammer it's nice to be able to blaspheme. It takes a very special and strong minded kind of atheist to jump up and down with their hand clasped under their other armpit and shout, 'Oh, random-fluctuations-in-the-space-time-coninuum!' or 'Aaargh, primitive-and-out-moded-concept on a crutch!'

========================

'I thought dwarfs didn't believe in devils and demons and stuff like that.'
'That's true, but... we're not sure if they know.'

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

"All I say is that I think it is damned unlikely that anything like a central cosmic will, a spirit world, or an eternal survival of personality exist. They are the most preposterous and unjustified of all the guesses which can be made about the universe, and I am not enough of a hairsplitter to pretend that I don't regard them as arrant and negligible moonshine. In theory I am an agnostic, but pending the appearance of radical evidence I must be classed, practically and provisionally, as an atheist."

Through me you pass into eternal pain:

To rear me was the task of power divine,
Supremest wisdom, and primeval love.

Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
