Ah, you want to give me a reason to be outraged? How about the lives Mr. Porter potentially put at risk by video blogging while driving? Jeez.
That shocked me.
His posts are full of misspellings and poor grammar. Now, if it were somebody who wasn't making a living by creating written content, I wouldn't care. Writing content as a company representative and having that content loaded with misspellings and poor grammar makes me concerned about the quality of any documents I might buy from him.
Lack of concern for other people (which he demonstrates by making a video while driving) raises concerns about his customer service.
He's working hard to wreck his company's public profile.

Goodness, yes. Imagine how much it must strain one's driving abilities to speak out loud while driving with a video camera trained on you?
Seriously? Come on. It's not like he's staring down into the thing or having to adjust or manipulate it. He has his hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road. There are plenty of people out on the road that don't, as they're busy talking on the phone, or worse, texting while driving. This is a non-issue.
As for the company's product, I'm the head writer for the NeoExodus line. Louis is the publisher. He does what he does best: recruiting talent, layout and design, etc. He hires writers and editors to work for him and we do a damn fine job, if I do say so myself. If you have concerns, then I suggest you take a look at reviews of the products LPJ Design has for sale. Endzeitgeist has done several for our products. I think our track record speaks for itself.

There are many times during the video when his hands are NOT on the steering wheel and his eyes are NOT on the road. As for having to compare him to people who drive while on the phone, that's not earning you any points.
In the end, my comments were meant as constructive criticism. Don’t mangle the English language during publicity postings if your company makes a living selling written content. Don't do stuff that presents your management as taking risks with the public safety. If the company responds by getting defensive rather than acknowledging those common sense mistakes and striving to do better, that says more about the company.Eric "Boxhead" Hindley |

I'm shocked. Shocked and appalled. Louis is a danger to everyone around him, and will one day lead to the senseless deaths of a minivan full of orphans and nuns. And when he does, he's just going to laugh maniacally and tell us all that his marketing plan is working perfectly. This man is clearly a sociopath with no regard for human life.
Also, he spells things wrong on the internet.
D&D Next is going to crush Pathfinder; the Mythic playtest was a sham; I'm growing increasing concerned about rules bloat; I'm sick of all these Asian classes; SKR couldn't design his way out of a paper bag; Paizo needs to stop making rulebooks and go back to making adventures; they abandoned the spirit of D&D when they created rules for guns; we need more PFS events tailored specifically to male gamers, with no girls allowed; I'm rage quitting this messageboard because I'm tired of being attacked by overzealous Paizo fanboyz; Razor Coast!

Good catch, +5 Toaster.
You know who I miss, though? Obvious Troll is Obvious. I haven't seen a post from that guy in ages.
I bet he'd have a lot to say... about the collaborative monster book announced in this thread, what with all of these talented third-party publishers and Paizo freelancers coming together to design crazy-awesome monsters with minimal editorial interference. :)

I don't know- that sounds like talented freelancer propaganda. I'd hate to think people will assume this book will be good just because some excellent people are involved. I'll wait until its universally panned before I assume its a great book...

Yes, seriously. It's not a non-issue for me. Maybe you ought to take a look at that video again. Eyes on the road? Hand on the wheel? Mind on what's going on around him? Several times, not in this video.
I think it's appropriate to compare it to texting and driving or (especially) talking on the phone and driving. It is my sincere wish that Mr. Porter never finds himself in an accident because he choose to drive distracted. This is not a closed course, it's an open road with other people not paying attention, as you point out. I hope Mr. Porter doesn't cost someone their well-being or, god forbid, their lives.

This thread is worthy. Thank you for participating in a most amicable fashion. Several of you have been wonderfully condescending and snarky, congrats.
Mr. Porter, please give driving blogs another think. I'll raise a hamburger to you the next time I go through a McDonald's drive through. (See Shadowborn, that's me being ironic.)

Why champion any form of reckless driving? Regardless of the perceived "negligible risk" there is no denying driving without all attention on the road or hands on the wheel is LESS safe than all attention on the road and two hands on the wheel. Chew gum if you want to.
If I have learnt anything from this thread, Secret Plan X has exposed an inability of sections of humanity to be able to accept any negative or critical statements or points of view about their sacred cows. Pro-tip - do not have sacred cows. It leads to trying to defend the indefensible. Being able to accept critique in the spirit it was made is a key ability in self-reflection and self-improvement.
Another note:
I realised very early in my exposure to Louis marketing that Louis does not prioritise spelling or grammar in his announcements, and that, as he is not the writer per se, I was ok with that. Does this make him a bad person? Not to my mind. Just sloppy, and yes, ironic given the field we work in. His strengths are personality and passion, and his products reflect that passion.
TarkXT |
And comment about other people's driving habits in an off topic fashion that is, again, unfair to the people working on the project by personally criticisizing the promoter rather than the promoted.
I'd like to point out you have done all of this on a public forum where a simple private message would have done. And if it were I'd feel neither need nor inclination to be as snarky as I have.
EDIT: And I don't just mean Oceanshieldwolf. By the way come here to atlanta and do some driving on I85 between 3pm and 7pm. You'll get a brief understanding as to why Louis's blog is just a same crap different day scenario for me. :)
Oceanshieldwolf |
No worries tarkXT - thanks for indicating you weren't just pointing the finger at me. I appreciate it. :) Sorry you felt the need to be snarky. It was not my stated aim to incite snark. The decision to be snarky can however only rest with you.
I'm intentionally drawing many comparisons between stated aims and defending the indefensible. I'm not sure who you would have wanted me to send the PM to. Louis? You?
I'm equally supportive of Louis company, products and current project and critical of his marketing and advertising strategy and approach. I feel completely justified in doing both. There is a fine line between critique/criticism and downright insult and innuendo. I hope Louis can see my posts and finds something useful in them. I'm not here to create tension. Sorry if I have. None of this is meant to draw support away from Louis monster book. I have contributed to the brainstorm thread and tacitly approve of it's goals.
As to Atlanta's driving - none of that makes joining in right. As soon as you don't see this as normal the banality of evil dissipates and you'll see that every human around you is recklessly operating a giant power tool with impunity. Education in the face of stupidity is the only response. Sorry if that implies Louis was stupid. Perhaps careless is a better word.
I have been a terrible driver in my life, and realise only too well that inattention even for a moment at the wheel of a car is a mortal decision. There can be no defense of lax attention when using a power tool.

I'm sure if you practiced you could become a master at it.
I thought the same thing. Horrible.
Since I asked this at our monster post I wanted to hear people thoughts on this also:
OK I think I have decided hat we are going to do 2 pages per monster (a la Privateer Press' Monsternomicon). Is there any reason you think this would be a bad idea?

Nothing I could think of - in fact, this made me so much more excited about the book than any of the former announcements. Just my 2 cents, of course!

I think I am going to go all out graphic design wise on this one and I think the 2 page spread is going to be a lot of fun visually. Why try to cram something in a tight space of 1 page?

I'm not going to get into the "blogging while driving discussion," but as for "making grammatical mistakes on the interwebs!!!" goes: it's just my two cents, but Mr. Porter represents his company - not his editor. This isn't Microsoft or General Motors; this is LPJ Design. Louis makes a living doing what he does because of his design skills and his creative abilities. You're free to criticize those, but this isn't a publication... it's a thread on the friendly Paizo forums. Would you go into the Ask James Jacobs Anything thread and start picking on Mr. Jacobs about a spelling error?

While thinking of rewards, I might have a "final" list of rewards that donors will be able to add items at certain reward levels to this book including:
Submitting 2 Monsters to the book of which 10 Monsters will be choice to be including in it.
Submitting 2 Monsters to the book of which 10 Templates will be choice to be including in it.
Submitting 2 Monsters to the book of which 25 Traps will be choice to be including in it.
Submitting 2 Monsters to the book of which 25 Poisons / Disease will be choice to be including in it.
Submitting 2 Monsters to the book of which 15 Feats will be choice to be including in it.
Many of these rewards will fall in the $40 - $60 range so that they are reasonable by those would would like to have the opportunity to possibly be published in a book with MANY of the well known 3PP and freelancers who work on Pathfinder. Not a bad idea I think.
LMPjr007 |
Well, with that many top tier designers on board, it is very likely to be a good product when it's finally released.
There are still a few names that I have not been able to add to this list that I would like to. But the more people we add the better this will be. I just feel bad for the artists on this one. That is going to be A LOT of artwork.
LMPjr007 |
And with that, we just added Wendall Roy to the list of writers on this project. And the list gets bigger AND better! Who will be next?

Well you should definitely have stretch goals. Just make sure not to bite off more than you can chew, that's gotten a fair number of kickstarters in trouble.
And make sure you crunch the numbers at both ends of the 'number of backers' spectrum. I've seen kickstarters where I'm sure they were spending more than they were bringing in by hitting a stretch goal - they end up with way more backers than they expected so that they suddenly have to print a few thousand copies of that 'sixteen page player guide' that sounded like a nice, easy to produce add-on.
