Dealing with Maze

Advice

Hey guys! I am running Coliseum Morpheoun for a group of players, and it has been a lot of fun so far!

One problem I have though, is the item "Otherworldly Kimono" and its once per day maze. I am wondering for ways to deal with that spell, other than just a high spell resistance.

The scenario is basically a big tournament, so each battle is extremely public, and the pc tactics will be very well known (They are currently the #1 team). I already have some custom teams made up, but I can still adjust!

Levels are 16+, no 3rd party beyond the adventure

Note: If you have any ideas for teams of 3-5 high level guys, I would welcome them as combatants! I have been trying every template I can and making all sorts of weird monsters, and my players have been enjoying them quite a bit, but I am starting to run out of ideas, ha

Reading through the spell, the best way to deal with it is to make sure it isn't cast. Steal the item or take out it's bearer quickly.

After it's cast (barring increasing the PC's spell resistance) the best bet is to ensure they have some means of boosting their intelligence or plane shifting, which shouldn't be beyond them at 16+.

You could also find some way to make them register as Minotaurs to the spell, but the caster would have every reason to call bull on that.

Find the path or spell immunity.

That is all.

Grand Lodge

Monstrous Physique III can grant the Natural Cunning ability of Minotaurs, which is what makes them immune to Maze.

If they are fighting in a public arena, I think it's reasonable to presume future foes would know that the Maze spell is from the kimono, and therefore a 1/day (or 1/fight as is relevant here) ability.

Getting some 1-use-only items of Find the Path is probably their best bet. I don't know how much such an item would cost, but I'm sure there are forum-goers here who do.

Communal Greater Spell Immunity (Ultimate Combat)

also Dimensional Anchor on yourself will work

My best advice would be to give them more than one encounter a day. 1/day abilities are suddenly less terrifying when you're fighting 5 encounters a day.

Alternatively, you could decide that the coliseum has implemented a rule that the fight is only over when either party is dead. Then the maze will still be useful, as the party can gang up on whoever they mazed without his buddies around.

The first place I'd look is in the arena rules.

Is dimensional travel allowed? I suspect it isn't, because otherwise you might end up with some fairly dull fights where one contestant flees to his plane of choice and bombards his opponent from safety. And if dimensional travel isn't allowed, I suspect Maze wouldn't be allowed either (depending on how the rule is phrased).

Barbarian with spell sunder will get rid of the maze, while still having attacks left.

Maze the Mazer first.

The Exchange

Since gladiatorial combat is a spectator sport, and the audience came to witness unbelievable high-level combat carnage, I suspect that any spell that takes a combatant out of sight of the audience, from obscuring mist to imprisonment, is not going to be received well. Rather than receiving the big gold-plated belt and kisses from the arena maidens, they should expect boos and rotten vegetables. I'm sure the arena owners would have gone over what spells "wow the crowd" and which ones result in forfeiting the prize money.

Greasy Pit Fight Promoter: "You did good, kid, but when you send da other guy to some other dimension or whatever, people don't get to see his brains come out his ears! They stop showing up and we stop making money. Now get back out there and use blade barrier or sumthin' like that!"

These are great ideas, thanks guys!

You would have to read the adventure, and there is a lot of pretty flashy magic going on other than the maze (Prismatic wall, woohoo!)

Lord Pendragon has the correct assumption, as the pcs are the most famous arena combatants currently. Scrolls of find the path are pretty cheap, I think 1650g or so. Right now the reward for a fight is around 22000 gp and fame, so I think that will be worth it.

As for the rules of the arena, the rule of the coliseum morpheoun is "Don't Piss off The Khan", which has been the general answer to why the pcs aren't trying to assassinate other teams outside the arena, etc. The Khan wants blood in his arena, not out of it

EDIT: @ lincoln, this arena is basically someone's private plane, in which they have total control. It isn't mentioned in the AP, but I ruled that the fans can see everything, regardless of invisible, mazed, etc. So while the players might not see invisibility or through the mist, the crowd does
