Rules Questions

Hey, so I'm starting to GM and its all well and good but the only thing I am not positive on after reading the game master guide and core and advanced rule books, is monster health.....

The hit die are listed in the creatures type, so for example a bear, is an animal and so it has d8 hit die. My issue is where do I find how many hit die?

Additionally this creature type generalized hit die seems unusual to me as to use animals as an example again, this hit die d8 as far as I understand means a weasel, can have the same or potentially more HP than say, a Dire mastodon......or have I missed something?

Is there a table or something I've not read that I should have? Or does creature size come into it?

Thanks guys!

The stat block will have a line such as:

hp 30 (4d8+12)
This shows that this particular creature has 4 hit-dice, and those are d8's.

It could happen, but the bigger beasties usually have higher Constitution scores as well as more hit-dice.

There's no table that I know of, nor is there any general rule or guideline. If you're creating your own monster and you think it has too few hit-points, just give it the Toughness feat or a higher Constitution score. Or more hit-dice.

Sorry to be a pain but WHERE in the stat block x.x

Also be aware that the average hit points for the creature is already calculated in each statblock, so you don't need to actually roll for hit points. In the line VRMH wrote above, for instance, the creature has 30 hit points, which is equal to the average of 4d8+12.

Near the top, under AC and above Fort/Ref/Will.

Take a look at the Bear statblock, for instance.

(That link is to the online PRD, but the statblock looks the same in the Bestiary.)

Wait I found it x.x I now feel awfully silly

There isn't anything tying hitpoints to size that I know of, but there are guidelines for roughly how many hitpoints a creature of a given challenge rating should have.

As an add on to this question; As much as I think I have it down pat, whats a good way to gauge the CR max you should be building on an encounter for your adventurers

Generally a group of four PCs of the same level has the same CR as the level of the PCs. A general rule of fights is that PCs can handle 4 or 5 fights of the same CR per day. A low levels this isn't really the case at times, it depends on access to healing. In general, sending a creature more than party CR+3 is pretty intense and should take most of the party resources to win. It's also better to multiple slightly lower CR enemies to fight the PCs than just a single high CR enemy. Single enemies suffer from action economy problems. When you're enemy gets to go 4 times to your 1 it doesn't matter if you nearly kill 1 each turn, they'll probably take down your Big Bad Evil Guy before he can get much down.

Yep

It’s odd that this specific thread has been targeted for spamming before. I wonder if there is something special about it to get that kind of attention.

I think it's the fact that the thread has "Health" in it
