Trying to find ways for a low level sorcerer or wizard to cast this without getting walloped.
So the first ideas to hit me were extending the range or area of effect.
So far what I've run into is a bit of a stumper.
Widen spell works as Color Spray is a cone-shaped burst, but it is +3 SL which puts it out of reach of a low level. By the time you could either apply it or afford a rod you've got better things to cast.
Enlarge Spell is a better deal at +1 CL, but it is limited to spells with ranges of close, medium, and long. So it won't work with Color Spray.
Reach Spell another option at +1 CL, only works with spells with ranges of touch, close or medium.
Looking for advice or ideas?
Anyone?
Thanks!

A gnome with arcane bloodline would have...
CHA 20 -> +5 DC
Gnome magic -> +1 DC
Magical lineage (color spray) + Focused spell feat (lvl 1) -> +1 DC for using metamagic and +2 for one of several targets of spell.
Spell focus illusion (lvl 3) -> +1 DC
which is a DC 19 (DC 21 for one target) will save at level 3.
Add Greater Spell Focus lvl5, persistent lvl 7, heighten lvl 9, and pump charisma for a save that is like DC 40+

            If you want to focus on making Color Spray good later on, I would suggest taking a level dip into Oracle with the Heavens mystery and take the Awesome Display mystery. This makes color spray a viable spell up to double digits, assuming you keep up with your Cha score. Not to mention the mystery works well with many good sorcerer/wizard spells.

Everyone else: Appreciate the tips so far thanks. Bumping up the DC helps, though I usually go with Spell Focus because it really locks down the sorc (he cannot move).
VRMH: If your wizards/sorcs can cast a spell with 15' range that requires a clear line and then stay out of charge or counterattack range, please enlighten me into your strategy at low levels. I am always open to positive suggestions. I would think it would be 1) move to get into range of spell (provided you are not a spontaneous caster with metamagic) 2) cast spell. Hence my request for increasing range.
So it looks like Widen, or make sure the spell lands (high DC). Anyone else?
Thanks in advance.

            Why would you get "walloped" when casting Color Spray? It's a standard action to cast, so just move out of the way after spraying your foes.
I expect that he's putting himself into harm's way to get the most targets into the color spray's area.
To make the most of your spell, people need to use the delay action. If the fighter who beat your initiative delays, you can move up to cast, immediately followed by your meat shield. If you stand 5 ft. behind two front-line types (leaving 5 feet between them), you can nuke the spaces right in front of them. Anyone who wants to melee with you must walk into a flank box. By using delay, you can ensure that you all advance and retreat together.

            Why don't you use a mount ?
It lets you cast your spell before AND after moving, assuming you succeed a Concentration Check (DC10 + spell lvl.).
It's also a great way to increase your mobility (easily double your speed if you play a gnome) and reduces the impact of the increased casting time when applying metamagics.

Thought about a mount. It will have to wait until I can afford (skill ranks, feats, equipment) one. Or how viable is a regular horse as a caster mount in combat? Of course I would not be taking one down dungeons, but in the open it's a potential fix.
Concentration check would be 11. So at level 1...the spell failure isn't that high? Going to try it.

            You can only make an attack action with a spring attack, not any standard action. The feat you're looking for is Flyby Attack, yes I have done it, several times, and it is exquisite. Not necessarily for color spray itself, but for a lot of spells it's awesome.
Ok...you have to be flying for flyby, right? Sounds like an excellent way to go...

            The Oracle dip Starcoffin mentioned is pretty great though not important at very low levels. The suggestion to use a mount seems pretty good to me. The horses from the book are pretty decent at low levels, but you'll want to buy a warhorse so you don't have to make difficult Ride checks during combat.
If you're really committed to the mount strategy check out the Sylvan wildblooded archetype for Sorcerers with the Fey bloodline. It grants you an animal companion. The companion is at level -3, so you might want to take the Boon Companion if it is available. Another option is to get Robes of Arcane Heritage to add 4 levels to your bloodline powers. Either way you'd get a spare level to cover that Oracle dip.
Being a gnome so you can ride the companion at low levels and more easily fit it into dungeons would be a good plan. If you go with the Dire Bat or Roc you'll also be able to fly. Wow, I kind of want to play this PC now...

I realize this ended a few weeks ago, but it was funny to read this and have my character slowly described...
He's currently a sorc 5/ oracle 1 gnome illusionist. I have the sylvan archetype (I ride a lion), and have boon companion. My color spray DC is 19 (or 20, come to think of it...) and it's always funny to see various GM's say "Ok, he failed his save. But at this level he's only stunned for 1 round, right?"
"Au contraire..."
