Buying adventuring supplies

Advice

Campaign has the party being shipwrecked on an island. The DM has made it clear that he is going to keep track of pretty much everything and we won't have the opportunity to buy/find much beyond weapons and armor.

What should i buy for a wizard? Besides the class kit.

Scarab Sages

lots of ink, quills and parchment/paper for making scrolls.

Start with the fantasy equivalent items of a survival kit, including

wire and cord/twine for making snares
fishing hooks & line
salt
blanket
tindertwigs
whistle, mirror
utility knife
camp mallet/hatchet
first-aid kit
needle & thread
sacks, waterskin

And, of course, a handy "How to Survive on a Desert Island" survival manual.

What would you take if you were going camping in the wilderness for weeks at a time without access to civilization?

What level are you and how much wealth? Bags of Holding and Handy Haversacks are going to be well worth it if you can afford them. Fill them up with mundane items including tools and camping gear.

Shadow Lodge

Being a wizard, you'll want to bring along some writing implements, a blank spell book, etc. You never know when you might have to dump whatever's in your head into a fresh book. Blank books are useful anyway, particularly if you 'accidentally' convince someone that the writing is invisible...

Why are you buying supplies for being shipwrecked on an island? Did you book a passage on a ship traveling to a shipwreck? Are you planning on causing the shipwreck yourself?

Scarab Sages

It's quite likely Serpent's Skull in which you are told at the beginning that although you are on board a ship to start with you are very quickly shipwrecked and to prepare your character accordingly and not for a ship based campaign.

Well the party is a mix of crew/passengers on a pirate ship that is going to get shipwrecked in the first session.

We only have 500 gold at level 3, so funds are a bit tight.

bump.

Slings - you'll never run out of ammo.

Why would i want to use a sling?

Shadow Lodge

Like VRMH said, you can use rocks as ammo so you can kill those birds need you to get feather for the arrows you can craft with your craft skills.

Cost nothing, weighs nothing, and the ammo cost nothing and weights nothing. Everyone but the druid has proficiency, so there is little reason not to get one.

I'm not going to be using a bow anyway, and i would do nearly no damage with a sling...

as long that you dont have a - str sling is a good backup weapon to have, even if you never want to do range, at lest you can attack someone thats out of your range. I always tell people to get ranged weapons.

I've got 7 str because the DM wants us to use an array actually.

Net and light crossbow. good for fishing and hunting.

And as far as slings go, I think the only time you incur a STR penalty is using a bow.

The sling may cost and weigh nothing, but the ammo does. 1 silver piece for 10 bullets, which weigh 5 pounds total.

And Strength penalties do apply with slings.

Quote:
Sling: A sling is little more than a leather cup attached to a pair of strings. Your Strength modifier applies to damage rolls when you use a sling, just as it does for thrown weapons. You can fire, but not load, a sling with one hand. Loading a sling is a move action that requires two hands and provokes attacks of opportunity.

So with just a 7 strength, thats only 1d4-2 damage. 1d4-3 if he runs out of bullets and must start using regular stones.

How can a wizard fish/hunt with nothing in survival? It doesn't really fit the character theme either (unless you are specifically playing a wizard who grew up doing that stuff).

Survival isn't a trained skill. Anyone can attempt it even with 0 ranks. By Taking 10, anyone (as long as they don't have a Wisdom penalty)can get along in the wild and provide enough food and water for themselves every day.

And as Track is no longer a feat in Pathfinder, everyone can track with Survival as well.

A Halfling with the Well-Prepared feat might prove useful.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Yes, always carry a halfling. They have multiple everyday uses around the house.

hmm, anything else?

Liberty's Edge

Antitoxin, Holy water, Alchemical Fire, Tanglefoot Bag, Healing Kit

Warm-weather clothing.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Spell pouches. Without them, you're sunk.

Liberty's Edge

Rich parents trait and a traveler's any tool.

A boat?

A fishing rod, a gold medal at the end of its line, and Michael Phelps.

Wait, we're not playing that game, are we?

...I'd bring basic gear. Pack, bedroll, food, waterskin. Maybe some rope, definitely flint and steel if not tindertwigs.

If it fits the character and you can afford it, the False Focus feat combined with a tattooed holy symbol can allow you to basically forgo material components up to 100 gp, and you don't even have to worry about losing a holy symbol.

Liberty's Edge

To add to Loup Blanc's advice pick up the spell blood money from RotRL anniversary edition so you can bypass expensive material components in a pinch.

I would make a regular character, and treat any problems that arise from being shipwrecked as a challenge to be overcome. Though I would strive to avoid character options that would be overly gear-dependent, as being completely useless wouldn't be particularly fun :)
