What spawned encounters would you like to see?

I've been going over in my mind the information we have on the hex spawning escalation. I particular, how (if left unchecked) roving bands of monsters grow into larger groups. If left unchecked these groups could take over a hex. If they still remained unchecked they would start spawning small groups into the neighboring hexes.

As we get farther afield with our exploration in Early Enrollment I would like to see us run across that exact situation. First encountering smaller groups, then larger, then finding the monster controlled hex. As I have mentioned in other threads, if the monster group controlling the hex were lawful, they may have advanced enough to have unit combat. Going up against them would give us practice in unit combat before we had to start building our own units for settlement and nation war.

What would you like to see as the spawned encounters in the wild?

Trolls, ogres, hobgoblins and bugbears. Sometimes mixed groups of those races working together in association.

Lonely nymphs in need of company.

I have no doubt there will be the common spawns that we can all expect. But, I would love to see random, rare spawns as well.

How cool would it be if a random, Dragon spawned and suddenly attacked a caravan. And both merchants and bandits find that they have to join forces to beat back the common threat.

they where going to be in but at last moment where replaced by Drow females in black leather skirts who will punish you for being naughty.

"Thank you, can I have another..?"

That nymph might turn out to be a selkie and drown you.

At least, that's what old wives warn their old men about.

For me, I'd like colorful NPC characters to show up in the oddest places with clues to the whereabouts of special encounters, lairs, lost/hidden items, maps, arcane lore, and similar.

I hope the dynamic dungeon generator is really prolific.

Those are amazing, but I am hoping for a lone (extremly rich) goblin with a crutch.

Orcses, filthy orcses.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think there will be the standard fair of green meanie spawns to keep the areas interesting. I just would like it if they added some dynamic events.

They could take an area's statistics and create spawns that oppose some of the activities or groups in those areas. Not that they would need to happen often just every now and then to give a more flavor than "hey look it's another goblin camp...how original."

A area that was being harvested have for materials could have a druid group.

An area that has nearly no banditry should have some rapscallions that spawn and liberate goods.

An area with high banditry should have a some Hellkinghts lay the smack down.

A hex that has a good settlement should have a nice demon pit pop open.

A hex that has a LE stronghold should have a carnival of drunken barbarians come to free the enslaved and drink the beer.

Just out of curiosity ... if "levelling up" (to the limited extent it exists at all) is related to training time rather than "XP" - do these NPC and PvP encounters provide anything other than loot?

Very likely since you not only need to train skills to level up but accomplish certain related tasks as well that could very possibly include killing "x" amount of monsters. Someone who just logs in now and then to train up new skills won't be leveling their character.

I would really like to see encounters based on the actual terrain and surroundings related to them. It will breathe more life into the game to say that such and such creatures are found in the forests and these other types you'll only see up in the mountains.

That also gives hunters some focus since they can not only become good at killing a certain type of creature but get bonuses based on the terrain they are located in as well.

Goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres, trolls, giants.

Skeletons, zombies, ghouls, ghosts, wights, wraiths, spectres, mummies and vampires.

And kobolds, drow, troglodytes, demons, devils and insects.

Basically the entire monsters' manual so? LOL

Just no swarms...

Just for fun, how about some Demi-Humans? I recall reading there was some sort of Elven ruins in the area, so maybe some Elves and maybe Half-Elves from Kyonin searching for these ruins? Of course this will give a reason for the Drow to be there per Aeioun's post. Perhaps there would even be a way to assist/hinder them (both groups) in their search for lost Elven relics?

Given the Fey in the area, Gnomes would have a reason for seeking them out, since they are still closely tied to the First World.

A large Orc presence might mean a group of Half-Orcs could have their own groups, either as part of the Orc war-bands, or as outcasts from both Orc and Human societies.

With hints that slavery might be in the mix, Halflings could pop up in small settlements (hamlets?) - which would give a good reason for Gnolls to also be in the area, as they are slavers and find Halflings well suited to slavery (that Halfling pluck keeps them alive and capable where other races are either too willful, like Dwarves, or too frail, such as Elves).

This will also, give non-good aligned PC's targets and allies.

I'd like a progression within a creature type.

Fey could go from pixie to nymph.

Plants could go from assasin vines or violet fungus to treant.

Undead from zombies and skeletons to ghouls and wraiths.

So on so forth...

It would give a particular area a consistent feel.

The Red Dead Redemption approach would be nice. Random NPC out in the woods. "Help me stranger! A bandit stole my horse! I could use your help to get back to town." If you help them back to town you would gain some money and positive alignment. Or you could kill them and take their possessions. Or they might turn on you and steal your horse. Or they might be a were-rat and eat you once you got away from witnesses.

Of course potentially most of these ideas would already be duplicated by PCs out in the world, but I always loved those encounters in RDR. They go a long way to making the world seem much more alive.

Yes, and Humans too. Infestations don't always have to be monsters.

If a nearby settlement is Good and/or Lawful the humans and demi-humans could be bandits and highwaymen. If a nearby settlement is Evil and/or Chaotic they could be the equivalent to a swat team sent to eradicate the evil/anarchic menace.
