Not sure if we're back to the regularly-scheduled review of all the items, but, for my part, I'm looking forward to your review of my item (even though I know I'm down there toward the bottom of the right column), and really appreciate your taking the time to go through our entries and share your thoughts and critiques!

Yeah, I do apologise on my lack of reviews and presence today, it has been one of those Murphy's laws days, and just as I sat down to do the next one, I got a migraine.
It's just now fading away, so I'm taking a breather for the next few hours and will come back fired up and fresh in the morning ( uk time is me )

Ok, it's underway, I have my hot morning tea, my big red pen and have just posted up the first of today's reviews.

That aspect every round is also publicly reviewed, so I am just trying to help on the polish side of things. The mojo is all yours, so make it shine every round.

No problem, glad you are enjoying them and hopefully gaining a few helpful nuggets.
But please also be very aware that there is very little in the way of mojo assessment in my reviews - I think the public vote and judges have pretty much covered the mojo aspect of the items.
I am looking at the execution, the polish, the style, the writing to help everyone improve on the this aspects of design and hopefully make next year's voting even more pleasurable than this year's.
When I start on archetypes, there will be different categories...
I will keep template use where templates are used in a round, and spelling errors if found will be covered as part of this. There will be just the one passive score check, probably incorporated here as well so that it has less effect on the overall score.
Archetypes will have a balanced swap section looking at how balanced the ability swapping I think is, they will likely have a flavor rating of some sort in here too - is it an obvious bolt in flavor or was it designed from the ground up around the setting desired sort of thing?
I'll then do a "would I change anything as a designer" like my item reviews.
I won't score though from round 2 onward. It cuts explaining the scores and scoring system out, so I can review faster and not have to maintain consistency in scoring :)
Oh, yeah, just updated the post with another review ... "gonna stomp... all night... "

In some ways I think this type of feedback would be far more useful for those who didn't make the top 32.
As it is, I'm not sure what this level of detailed feedback for those who were successful will ultimately achieve - it may be nice to point out general aspects of writing that can be applied to future rounds, but it also might bias voters against some designers who you've given low scores (particularly in the later rounds, when a designer's early work might be taken into account to help decide between the very top entries). I could be wrong here though, and if the top 32 welcome the feedback, then certainly carry on.
I do hope that you'll update your dictionary before you score people's spelling. It's one thing to maintain consistency across reviews, but if the people you're reviewing are consistent with a different standard (i.e., standard English instead of the particulars of the dictionary you choose), then you're doing them a disservice, and you should adapt to their standard, rather than encouraging them (via negative feedback) to adapt to a standard that they don't know and therefore can't meet.
If it were me, I would take more care as well with what I consider passive. To give one example (from Hell-shod boots) - 'seem to be' is not grammatically passive (in fact, it cannot be made passive in English), and is equivalent in structure (and very nearly in meaning) to 'appear to be' which is also not passive (and also can't be made passive). I was a bit confused by your comment that 'seem to be' would be better if replaced by 'appear to be' - they both have the same problem of saying what the item is like, rather than what it is (and are both therefore kind of weak "passive" writing, even if neither can be grammatically passive).
That's just my opinion, and in any case your effort and enthusiasm are certainly inspiring.

Anthony Adam Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 |

Yeah, I'm still working on passive myself - with seems and appears, I find that when I read seems, it implies an all encompassing term, including aspects beneath a visible surface, where appears is for me talking about the surface visible layer only... Hope that makes sense.
Im also looking not so much at what is technically passive, but also that hazy, gentle description, where you show a passive style to vaguely say things rather than out right say them. In novels, and flavour text it can be useful, but for items, I personally prefer clean well stated non ambiguous descriptions.
That's why on every review I include the caveat that the opinions are mine and not necessarily Paizo. The public can read, digest and take what they will from my ramblings.

The difference in meaning you describe doesn't not make sense, if that makes sense :)
I just meant to point out that both are similarly passive in style (even the verb 'resembles' which is a more dynamic alternative, falls into the same trap, in my opinion, of describing what something is like rather than saying more directly what it is - which is the problem for both seem and appear).

I would go a step further. Instead of saying what something is or even what something has, it's usually better to say what it does. Even if it means changing the grammatical subject.
"This teacup is white, and has a floral pattern that is pink."
vs.
"A pink floral pattern decorates this white teacup."
A nice side effect is that it tends to save on word count. Also, changing the subject a lot will make an entry less boring to read. Every other sentence won't start with "The teacup... The teacup... This teacup... A teacup..."

Hi all,
You won't believe my luck this January - my main pc just died >.<, on top of all the other rubbish I've gone through this month (posted elsewhere)
Anyway, i popped on my auto correcting even if I don't want it to iPad to let you know... I will finish the item reviews and move on to the archetypes, but will need a few days to sort out some sort of kit and get office reinstalled.
Fortunately, all my superstar files are on a memory stick, and a back up on my work pc, so I haven't lost anything.
That being said, I just had a very pleasurable few hours reading all the archetype entries...

Template Fu talks about writing analysis tools and mentions they are standard on many word processing programs. I checked my Microsoft Word 2010 here at work and did not see them except for the generic spelling/grammar and word count tool. Could you shed some more light on the tools? I'm all about using them since I am used to writing for engineers. Our documents are typically extremely boring.
Here's hoping that you have exhausted all the bad mojo in January.

Template Fu |

Sure, on Word 2010, you need to be in the review tab after the first step below.
Looking at word in it's default layout, at the bottom of your page you will see the Language of the document in the bottom bar, usually an inch or two in from the bottom left corner, it will be something like "English UK" or "English US".
So what you can do for work you do that needs to be in English US is
a) Select All
then
b) Press the language in the bottom bar - it will pop up a dialog allowing you to choose "English US" as the language for all highlighted text.
then
c) Once that's done, you can spelling and grammar check the selected text. (or you can wait for all the wiggly red and green lines to appear after a few seconds and right click them as normal)
Eventually you will be able to get all the way through and will be asked something like "would you like me to check the rest of the document?"
Now, if you selected all, you say YES to this dialog
You are then presented the statistics where it gives you word count, etc.
The passive/reading scale measurements are in the bottom half, word count, etc are in the top half of this dialog.
Other things you can do is go into the Word Options and the spelling and grammar sub sections and check out the various check boxes to turn on or off various metrics as appropriate. One I often check is to treat all capitals as an abbreviation - that way spelling checker ignore CMD etc type of abbreviations.
I hope that helps.

I found it! Really cool. My version of Word at work was NOT configured to do this. Thanks!
I also saw options for commas, quotes, and the space between sentences. I would love to have a screen shot of the settings used by Paizo.

Despite that, it's also important that you provide useful and meaningful feedback to the competitors. You've got to be clear and constructive with it. Don't just lob a bunch of firebombs and torch their design. Additionally, tearing something down for the purposes of showing off your own design skills/knowledge might assuage whatever burn you might be feeling by not making the Top 32 yourself, but you should never take that out on others. It's not constructive criticism. Instead, it's destructive behavior...both toward them, and for yourself. (Note: I'm not saying you're doing this with your Template Fu analysis. I'm just saying those providing feedback need to check themselves before they offer up criticism.)
Additionally, I think it's important for the Top 32 to start developing good habits on how to receive and respond to criticism.
This thread is like a flashback to when I was a judge with Neil. I'd go into a thread on a wondrous item and I would find that Neil had already posted a three paragraph critique. And I agreed with him. So I would post "What Neil said."
I find myself doing that again with this thread. So, for old time's sake, let me do it again:
"What Neil Said."
