Dynamic Duo: Ratfolk Crit Fisher + Scythe fighter?

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So ive been super intrigued by the ratfolk

Im thinking a rogue with Keen Kukris and Butterfly Sting, and Precise Strike to make SA hit harder?

Paired with a Fighter with Precise strike and a x4 weapon (scythe, pickaxe?)

Rogue hands off crits to Scythe while still getting SAs off and the 1d6 bonus from Precise Strike? Im still crunching numbers and making builds but

Rogue
Str: 10
Dex: 18
Con: 14
Int: 14
Wis: 10
Cha: 10

(after racials)

Fighter or maybe cavalier?

Str: 16
Dex: 15
Con: 12
Int: 14
Wis: 10
Cha: 7

maybe drop dex to 13 so cha doesnt have to be a 7?

more work later.

Rogue

Str: 10
Dex: 18(19 after lvl 4)
Con: 14
Int: 14
Wis: 10
Cha: 10

1:Finesse
RT:Weapon focus
3:Precise Strike
RT:Combat Trick (Combat Expertise)+1 Dex
5:Butterfly Sting
RT:Combat Trick (Outflank?)

Fighter:
Str: 16
Dex: 15
Con: 12
Int: 14
Wis: 10
Cha: 7

1: Wep focus: Scythe, PA
2: Precise Strike
3: Outflank
4: Weapon Spec Scythe
5: Wep Training: Heavy Blades
6: Wep Spec: Scythe

hows it look?

Not Rogue, go Inquisitor for the free Teamwork feats.

Why not 2 rogues (or other sneak attacking class, like Viv. Alchemist) to take advantage of Swarming and have all attacks be sneak attacks for the both of you?

I guess it would put off gaining Improved Crit....

If 3E content is an option, this set up is begging for the fighter....and possibly the rogue.... to have the Backstab feat. (Basically, when flanking a foe, each time he does not attack you, it provokes an AoO from you)

Grand Lodge

What about a Vivisectionist? The racial favored class bonus is a boon, and you will have more options.

Vivisectionist and two weapon fighter archetype would be a great combination.

Go Cavalier instead of fighter, and take the Cockatrice order. At 8th level, any time the rogue crits with one of those keen Kukris, the Cav gets an AOO. Tactician can be Precise Strikes and Greater Tactician can be Outflank (which gets more AOOs on criticals). The Cav benefits with a crit-fishing rogue by getting extra AOOs, and the Rogue benefits by not having to take the teamwork feats himself/herself.

Alternately, you could take Paired Opportunists as one of those tactician feats. Considering you're both flanking and (probably) adjacent, either of those type of feats work very well for you.

Cavs and Rogues go together like puzzle pieces.

Grand Lodge

Unless you need Rogue for "flavor", Vivisectionist is a better option here.

Is the vivsectionist the crit fisher or the big hitter? If its the critfisher then he doesnt get the feats fast enough to make this doable IMO.

Grand Lodge

What feats? Faster how?

combat tricks gets you Precise strike earlier so i guess i was thinking you needed the extra feats. =/ Vivisectionist looks like it works i just didnt know enough about the Alchemist.

Grand Lodge

If sneak attack is not a must, then Inquisitor will work better.

You will get bonus Teamwork feats, and lot's of versatility.

We've been discussing this within our group too. I'd do two dual wielding rogues, and get all of the dagger bonuses you can. including the trait.

Sneak attack is key because it become the crit fishers primary method of damage.

Basically the crit fisher has to be a rogue or a vivsectionist. It has to have the Sneak attack die to do any real damage because all of his crits will divert to the fighter/cavalier/barbarian maybe?. The fighter wrecks face. This idea rules i just gotta put my thinking hat on work it all out.

Inquisitor could work too in lieu of fighter as the free teamwork feats are nice. However a fighter gets plenty of feats to spare a few. Outflank is nasty. When the fighter gets a critical hit the rogue gets another AoO which which can crit again.

Liberty's Edge

As others have posted I'd replace the rogue with an inquisitor.

On the damage front the rogue appears to have more damage potential than the inquisitor due to sneak attack but this is only true if the inquisitor is resource tapped. Let's look at a few levels using just class skills without spell buffs.

Level 6 (Your Example Build Level):
Sneak Attack: 3d6/Avg Damage 10.5/Damage Range 3-18
Destruction Judgment+Bane: 5+2d6/Average Damage 12/Damage Range 7-17

Level 12 (DPS Olympic Benchmark):
Sneak Attack: 6d6/Avg Damage 21/Damage Range 6-36
Destruction Judgement+Greater Bane: 9+4d6/Avg Damage 23/Damage Range 13-33

Level 20 (Cause we all love theory level caps):
Sneak Attack: 10d6/Avg Damage 35/Damage Range 10-60
Destruction Judgment+Greater Bane+Slayer: 13+4d6/Avg Damage 27/Damage Range 17-37

As you can see the two classes are neck and neck with either pulling ahead by a point or two at times. This difference skews vastly in the inquisitors favor if there is prebuff time before combat and as long as his resources last.

Second, and most important for the crit fishing build, is the spell Battlemind Link. Available to inquisitors at level 10 this spell drastically improves your ability to fish for crits.

Battlemind Link:

School divination [mind-affecting]; Level inquisitor 4, sorcerer/wizard 6
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range personal and close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target you and 1 ally
Duration 1 minute/level
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
You fuse your thoughts with an ally's, allowing the two of you to fight in tandem, perfectly coordinated. You and the ally each roll initiative in combat and use the higher die result before adding modifiers. This has three effects.

Melee: If you both make melee attacks against the same creature, you both make attack rolls and both use the higher of the two dice for your attack rolls (plus bonuses).

Ranged: If you both make ranged attacks against the same creature, you both make attack rolls and both use the higher of the two dice for your attack roll (plus bonuses).

Spell: If you both cast spells and target the same area or same creature, affected creatures take a –2 penalty on their saving throw against the spells.

You and the target lose these benefits if you cannot see each other or if you or the target is unconscious or helpless.

Taking Keen Kukris we have a 15-20 crit range that gives us a 30% chance per attack to threaten a crit. With Battlemind Link up for every attack you have 210 possible d20 combinations with 85 of those containing a 15 or better on one of the die. This gives a 40.47% crit chance per attack. This is slightly better than having a 13-20 crit range.

Combine this with all the other buff spells like Divine Power and Improved Invisibility, great utility and for me the inquisitor wins hands down.

(Also if you want to get crazy take the Animal domain, pump your companions int score up and teach it a few teamwork feats.)

Sczarni

Don't forget-- the rogue/inqisitor/vivisectionist still needs Butterfly's Sting to hand off those crits, which means Combat Expertise, and the TWF line to effectively dual wield his kukris (and kukri proficiency, since a light weapon that crits on an 18 is what makes the build work). Rogues can spend a rogue talent to get at least one of those extra, but vivisectionists don't get any of those feats for free, and all the Inquisitor gets is Precise Strike and possibly a weapon proficiency if they pick the right deity. And strictly speaking, we don't need Precise Strike, especially if the Cavalier is a Fighter.

Battlemind Link is cool, but the critfisher here is actually so feat-starved I'm wondering if this isn't actually a better job for a Cavalier and another Fighter.
