Eidolon ideas!

Advice

I'm gearing up for a new game, and my friend who isn't exactly a pro is looking to play a summoner. She's not a complete newb, but in my opinion she's still lacking in the roleplaying area, and can be a bit of a misfit when it comes to remembering all the rules. She's only ever played rogues and Rangers, and our last game she did a whole lot of 'I steal the shiny thing because that's what rogues do.'

So, I'm kind of looking forward to giving her a charactor that should force her to play out a different, more complex personality. In the mean time though, I'm trying to come up with ideas for her to use as an eidelion. I'd rather convince her to go with a theme rather than just try to power game some sort of speghetti monster that doesn't make any sense.

So far, the only idea that has shown any promise is building essentially a Grim Reaper that follows her halfling summoner around, and play it out as a sort of 'I have no idea why he protects me, or seems to be at my beck and call, but I'll go with it' sort of theme, and let the GM figure out the rest. I'm looking for other interesting themes though... any ideas?

The player could be from a sea side society that gives homage to a great sea spirit protector. She can be the offspring of the village's elder who shares a great connection with the spirit as a medium. As the elder's offspring the player too has a great connection with the spirit and can manifest its being as spectral armor around her self. Using the spirit as her guardian spirit in combat. She decides though to go adventuring for w/e reason u want in order to achieve w/e for the village because soe thing happened to disturb the natural order of her people.

The following is a level 20 build for the summoner that can literally fight butt naked with out any items and makes a great tank.

Race: Half Elf
Class: Summoner (Synthesist Archetype)
Stats: Str = 10
Dex = 10
Con = 17 with racial modifier
Int = 13
Wis = 14
Cha = 14
when leveling add 3 to con and 2 to cha
take the Half Elf Favored Class Option for Summoner
Eidolon's base form Aquatic
Powers obtained via Eidolon = -Fast Healing x4
-Natural Armor x5
-Limbs x3
-Claws x3
-All 5 immunities
Feats = -Extra Evolution x5
-Toughness
-Dodge
-Combat Expertise
-Combat Reflexes
-Resilient Eidolon

this build with no items magical or other wise gives the following statistics at lv 20 when infused with your Eidolon:

Heath = 320 with out Eidolon and 485 when fused with it
Immunity to all damage excluding force, physical, positive and negative
Fast Healing 4
7 attacks a round at full bab each (15)
AC = 51 with out Combat Expertise and 56 with Combat Expertise
Self Healing via Class spell list

My advice - don't give or let someone who barely understands the rules a summoner. Building Eidlons is tricky enough even with someone who has expirience playing them. Unless you want to be looking over her character sheet every level and she is also comfortable with being looked over all the time (even then it's still probably best if you have Hero Lab to validate the Eildon).

Summoner is just a wonderful example of base classes intentionally being very light on fluff so: It's neither stated to be an innate talent or a learned ability.

Well aside from "nymph that claims to be her finance" there's "you where somewhere you weren't supposed to and broke a seal"

I strongly recommend against Undead Appearance for your initial idea if you use it. I think it is the only evolution that actually makes you weaker (it explicitly notes your pet is now vulnerable to a 2nd level spell that gives the caster complete control over it).

+1 she would essentially be running two characters, a full caster and the eidolon. For role playing I have found that since the eidolon does most of the work, the summoner gets ignored. Not to mention keeping the crazy summon list handy just in case the eidolon dies is also taxing on the player.

Most dms ban the synthesist and master summoner for the same reason society play does: they can solo an adventure meant for 4 to 5 people. Keep that stuff in mind while choosing.

There are tons of possible options for some roleplay fun for a summoner. A few I can think of off the top of my head:

-Eidolon appears to be the PC and the summoner seems to be just his buff focused sorcerer cohort(one I'm actually using).

-Eidolon is incarnation of dead friend/relative, come to aid summoner in an upcoming difficult trial.

-Ever see one of those sitcom episodes where the two characters glue themselves together? It's kinda like that for these two.

-Eidolon is secretly some kind of fiend/celestial, come to corrupt/redeem the summoner.

-Eidolon is actually the spirit of the summoner, sent back through time by some cataclysmic event or a really bad case of food poisoning. And now, they're bound together somehow.

-Eidolon is an outsider as normal, but bound to serve because he lost a bet of some kind. Bonus points if the bet is often referenced, but remains a noodle incident. Each time, the references should make it sound more and more outlandish and strange without ever giving away any actual information about what went on.

-Eidolon served someone else in the family line once before, but failed them. Now trying to atone for this by helping the summoner.

Liberty's Edge

I'd suggest having the summoner be affected by some mind-fudging spell and make the summoner (male or female) believe that he/she is Oden riding his 8-legged horse Sleipnir.

Make it so that he/she wields godly powers (magic spells) whilst using his/her horse to combat the fools that appose him/her.

There, that'd be fun, eh?

Bonus: You could also get him/her to call the other party members god's names as well.

I agree, but it's not my call. I've done all I can to recomend another class, but she's pretty insistent. I'll just have to help her build it and hope for the best. On the upside, I don't particularly mind helping, and I have herolab to help keep everything legal. I also think it'd be a good learning experience for her, and I want to make sure she actually has something interesting to roleplay - which is the reason for this thread :)

The other nice thing is yes, she wont play the class well enough to break it.

I kind of like the 'lost a bet' idea. Still thinking though.

You might want to look at this as an opportunity to help guide her a bit. Use the Eidolon as a voice of common sense.

"Are you sure about that, Master?"

"Maybe we should wait for the rest of the party, Master."

"Perhaps you shouldn't open that book until we find out why it sounds like the souls of the damned are trapped inside it, Master."

Sorry if this derails the thread a little, but this has been driving me mad.

I have seen you Post this build on a couple of threads now, and I like it a lot. I do have a few questions about how you got your numbers.

HP:

with Max rolls

HD + CON + Feat = Total
Caster : 160 + 100 + 20 = 280

Eidolon: 150 + 45 + 0 = 195

caster + Eidolon = Total
Caster
+ : 240 + 195 = 435
Eidolon

Where do you get 320 HP naked From.

Evolutions:

I think you shortchanged yourself here

LvL + Feat + 1/2 elf = Total
26 + 5 + 5 = 36

Bite = 0
Imp Nat Armor = 0
gills = 0
swim x2 = 0
imp nat armor = 5
Limbs x3 = 6
claws x3 = 3
fast healing x4 = 10
immunities x5 = 10

total = 34

2 points short

AC:

Base + Armor + DEX + Nat + Dodge = total + Combat Expertise
10 + 16 + 5 + 14 + 1 = 46 + 4(50)

Where are you getting the extra 5 AC from?

Also you only get +4 dodge from Combat expertise because you only get to BAB 15. You need BAB 16 for +5.

Please let me know what I'm missing.

Thanks.

If its a build above 5th level, I like super fast flying mount eidolons, without buying extra evolution points you have 8 at that level, 1 for mount, 2 for basic fly, 2 to make his flight magical and perfect maneuverability, and 3the to up the flight seed by 60ft to a total of 100ft per round, build the summoner like a mounted combatant and attack half way through the movement, doing a charge gives you x2 speed to essentially by the end of your turn you're 100ft away from the guy you just hit

If she picks gnome or halfling for her race, her eidolon can be her mount from the beginning. Consider making the eidolon a quadruped with the claws, mount, and pounce evolutions at 1st level and having the summoner take the Mounted Combat feat and max out the Ride skill.

Eidolons get average hit points per HD anyway (i.e. 5.5), so your math should go down quite a bit. No idea where all the hit points in P-P's build are coming from.
