Can you sneak attack with a vehicle?

Rules Questions

Target was oblivious and the Rogue was driving. The Rogue said that since his target was flat-footed he could add his Sneak Attack. I always thought Sneak Attack was with a hand-held weapon.

Sneak Attack:
If a rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.

The rogue's attack deals extra damage (called "precision damage") anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the rogue flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every two rogue levels thereafter. Should the rogue score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.

With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (like a sap, whip, or an unarmed strike), a rogue can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty.

The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.

So the basic question is is whether a `vehicle` is considered a weapon?

Sneak attack requires an attack roll. Not all "attacks" qualify for sneak attack, even if they do deal damage.

A vehicle is also not a weapon.

I usually expect threads like this from Raving Dork. Vehicles don't qualify as "precision damage".

I really don't think there's a RAW on this.

It comes down to, would you allow the the character in question to take Weapon Focus: Said Vehicle?

If so, I'd allow. If not, nope.

This may be a bit houseruley for the rules forum, but I strongly believe this is not addressed anywhere in order to have RAW.

So if a vehicle had weapons on it, like a Chariot with spinning spikes, then you would agree then? Other than that, running over someone with a vehicle is not "precision damage" since you can't target vitals. Correct?

Being able to take weapon focus is not needed to sneak attack, you would not deny a player the ability to sneak attack with a fork they pick up in a tavern...Just sayin

The real question is would you deny a player taking weapon focus: cutlery? OK admittedly it would probably have to be WF: fork but seeing someone with WF: Cutlery on their character sheet would be awesome.

Well then, should the "weapon" only requirement be that it be hand-held?

If so then could you not Sneak attack with a Ballista then?

If the player can somehow manhandle a ballista so that it is within range for a sneak attack then yes. Although this should be reserved for comedic effect.

I liked that scene when Legolas jumped up on top of that ridiculous mammoth, smacked a bunch of arrows in its skull, and then kinda skateboarded down its trunk as it collapsed from being killed by death.

So, with that in mind, I would totally allow sneak attack damage with a chariot.

So no, RAW says you cannot do sneak attack damage with large, imprecise weapons, and I would include a vehicle as such.

Also here.

I don't know, I feel like in the movie Independence Day they manage to sneak attack an alien ship with a fighter jet.

I stand corrected, there apparently is RAW to cover this. whoda thunk it.

I'd allow it.
