Be safe and careful out there, and like a lot of others have chimed in here, work closely with your financial institution(s) and get very obsessive about security even moreso than before.
I've been in those shoes, and it's still shaking out fourteen years later, despite things largely having cleared up (including my father somehow 'disappearing financially' better than some of the best cover ops agents, apparently).
It'd never happen, but from a 'karmic' perspective I wish that the persons what did this sort of thing would have to come and *work* at my job until they paid off everything they stole, plus reasonable interest, and if they got *fired* they'd still have to pay it off in prison.
EDIT: I work in retail.

I agree, though it's a bit like closing the barn door after all the horses fled at this point. But I can forestall the next attempt. I'm also going to get set up with PNC's virtual wallet, so I can keep better track of what's going on. I have a suspicion as to who did it, but that isn't proof. And, God how I hope it isn't him, because that would be a very personal betrayal of trust.

John: That totally sucks!
In my area, there's been a rash of criminals who've installed card skimmers on ATMs and gas pumps. The current models are very sophisticated, with a tiny camera aimed at the keypad to capture PINs.
I don't know if it's an option for you, but the law gives you more consumer protections when you use a credit card vs. using a debit card.
The bottom line: If you're the victim of credit card fraud, the bank will fight to get its money back. If you're the victim of debit card fraud, you must fight to get your money back.
And, as usual, the law is set up to give more protections to those who already have more resources at their disposal (i.e. credit card holders vs. those who only have an ATM/debit card).

Hey friends, quick reminder that the Community Guidelines discourage advocating violence against real people. It's against the guidelines because it's considered advocating for an illegal activity, but I'm bringing it up because it makes me uncomfortable to read about violent and/or incarceral retribution against petty thieves!
John, I'm sorry that your account was targeted. That stinks, and I hope you can work things out with your bank to restore what was lost. Lean on us and the rest of your community for help! Treat this like an injury and reach out for some help as needed until the damage is repaired.
But let's also remember that the reason this is so damaging is because of a system that will kill us for not having money. The folks who run the bank that your account is in are far bigger swindlers than a single petty thief or even a ring of credit card scammers. The bank is not on your side; hell, they'll legally steal money from you for having been stolen from if your account drops into the red.
I'm not saying you can't be angry or upset. I would be, too, if that happened to me, and it's a bad place to be in. But if we're going to advocate violence, let's please direct it towards the dismantling of the biggest scam, i.e. capitalism. We don't need to enact punishment on petty thieves - our justice system already does that while not criminalizing large scale hauls like wage theft. We don't need vigilante justice, we need some perfectly legal executions of the folks in power who would see us die for daring to be poor.

Thanks, Mecha. Your point is well taken. I apologize for any infraction made on my part. I'm Sorry.
So, there's a little bit of good news. I spoke to the bank and got the errant transaction narrowed down. They will block all further transactions from that source. It seems that the source had been skimming $40 from my account since June 2015. The bank will investigate. They also refunded an overdraft fee, so I've got bus money for next week.
And now, the bad news. I do know the person that's been doing this. The Pastor of the Church my Mother and I go to has a side job, selling Life Insurance. I had a policy with him, and I asked him to cancel it when my employer began offering insurance. Why pay twice for the same thing? Apparently, not only had he not cancelled the policy, but he reduced the premium from $100 to $40. And set things up so that it's done electronically, without my permission. And I have a very good memory.
I'll forgive him, of course. But I can't trust him anymore, and I no longer respect him.

I must disagree with you. It is possible for more than one thing to be wrong, and while i will keep my creative fantasies regarding what i would love to see happen to thieves to myself, I cannot see how capitalism, which is an incredibly flawed system to begin with, is at fault for someone else's criminal behavior, or absolves them of guilt.

I'm glad you found the guilty party and got some money back. It sounds like the bank worked with you.
I really hope that vengeful suggestions deleted for fear if upsetting mechapoet further. , and you one day find justice in addition to vengeance.

Can you prove it? If so, can you sue for the lost money and lost interest?

While I respect your disagreement, I think you misunderstand me.
I don't mean to imply that capitalism absolves a thief or is always inherently responsible for the act of thievery (although it can be - the bread thief often steals out of need, not malice). It sounds like we can agree that stealing and the exploitative failings of capitalism are both wrong. But there are two things I think we really ought to think about, especially in a marginalised community:
1. We should aim for restorative justice rather than criminal punishment. If my belongings are stolen, but then returned, I'm good, that's square. Death, torture, imprisonment (which in America also means slavery), etc., are wildly disproportionate to the crime, not to mention a huge resource investment that doesn't improve my community.
2. We need to be wary of the separation between legality and morality. It's a federal crime to steal personal property, but corporations and government forces commit all sorts of thievery under different names without legal repercussions. Both are shitty behaviors, totally! But capitalism legally excuses one and not the other.

I am glad you figured out what was going on and are on the way of getting your money back.
I am sorry that your pastor was doing this to you. You are a bigger person than I as I would not forgive him for what he did...hopefully he gets investigated fully as he is probably doing this to others.

Good on you John for being the kind of person the world needs more of. Sad to hear that it was your pastor of all people who betrayed your trust, though glad to hear that the bank is working with you and appears to be investigating the matter.
I sincerely hope that however much was lost, that you are blessed with ten times as much in the near future, whether that be through direct reparation or an improved life situation.

Excellent news! I'm glad you got to the bottom of this!
Here's a little bit of free advice, and I apologize in advance if I sound like a dad. (If it's any consolation, I gave the same advice to my daughter...)
Your bank must provide you with a monthly account statement. This might be a paper statement that's mailed to you, or it might be online and you have to look for it. Either way, you really should go over your statement every month and look at each transaction to make sure it's legit. That's your first line of defense against fraud.
This crook stole almost $900 from you before you noticed. If you go over your statements monthly from now on, you'll catch fraud like this much sooner.
Good luck, and I hope that the bank will refund you!

Forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself. Forgiveness frees you from carrying around the burden of resentment. That said, you can still forgive someone AND hold them accountable for their actions.
I would also advise that you seriously consider filing a complaint with your state's insurance regulatory agency. I'm not sure if what he did to you rises to the level of fraud (as he'll probably claim it was a simple misunderstanding), but it was certainly a deceptive practice. This may well warrant investigation by the authorities.
If he did this to you, he's probably doing the same thing to others.

My theory as to why dragons keep attacking the meadery outside Whiterun in Skyrim.
*Knocking on the door* "C'mon guys, let me in. *hic* I swear I won't trash the place again. *hic*"
"No! You haven't paid last month's tab yet, and you're already tanked."
"*hic* Well, you can say goodbye to your chickens then. *hic*"

In case anyone is keeping up on the Bob Saga, I spent 3.5 hours at the VA yesterday doing psychiatric intake. 3 appointments plus a few extra things that needed to be done.
My psychiatrist agreed to put me on diazepam just in case I do have Meneire's Disease. It's one of the treatments for dizziness and it's within her scope of practice. She wasn't able to write for a water pill so I'll just have to wait for that. The diazepam is causing nightmares, which is really not fun for anyone but it's even less fun for someone with PTSD. Fortunately, I have medication for that so I'm going to see if that helps.
I have an appointment with the audiologist next week. I was told to not take the diazepam the 2 days prior just to make sure that I am presenting with symptoms for my tests.
I got a call today saying that the VA also wants me to see a neurologist. My lab work came back fine and that concerned them because I shouldn't be having problems. They will call me within the next few days (meaning that I'll probably have to call them Tuesday) to set up an appointment. This is what I wanted from the beginning, but they said that they didn't want to. With the blood clots in my brain last year, I wanted to make sure that there wasn't any nerve damage. I think that they are now agreeing with me, that we need to rule it out.
Anyway, this means that I'm still not working. I have managed to get very close on covering my bills for this month and some of next. I decided to see if my apartment manager would write me a late notice in advance so that I could start looking for housing assistance programs before it's too late and I end up piling up fees. She agreed that it was a good idea.
During all of this, I haven't felt like seeing my boyfriend. He's actually surprisingly ok with that. We just starting seeing each other so I think that he's ok with putting things on hold until I can get myself back to normal. He has offered to help out as much as he can. Unfortunately, the help I need is almost always when he can't. I need help with rides and his work schedule is not flexible because he's a live in caregiver for a man with dementia.
I hope that everyone else is doing ok.

Glad to hear your boyfriend is acting like he does - even if he can't help much, he proves the right mindset.

Even though I live in the Seattle area, I'm not in any condition to drive to Paizocon or to pay for the con, however I would still like to meet anyone who has traveled out here if you have the time. If you can make it to the North Seattle (Northgate), Mountlake Terrace, or Lynnwood areas, shoot me a message and we can get together. It's about 30 to 45 minutes north of the con depending on where you want to meet.
