I was playing with the idea of making a pure caster such as a wizard/sorcerer with levels of Eldritch Knight and Arcane Archer, or Abjurant Champion mostly because I wanted to try to make a combat familiar out of it. Since half the health of a d10 class would not be all that horrible at all, especially if I gave myself a high Con bonus.
The other root I would have done was to go Eldritch Heritage to gain a familiar as a barbarian, or some other full base attack class. Maybe just even going one level of wizard and enjoy using wands without a UMD check :p .
If I went with the human trait to gain "Eye for Talent", I could put it in intelligence for the creature, and boost it a few stats in int to allow it to get combat expertise and agile maneuvers, and have it proceed to ether do dirty tricks on enemies, but I find the problem is size to be a bit problematic.
In fact, aside from just going Improved Familiar, and getting a pet elemental, the problem of size puts a damper in a lot of potential ideas. Any suggestions?

Dragon Disciples get d12's :P
If you want a combat familiar for a non casting class, maybe going Ninja is a good option.
Goat or Pig is your choice for a small familiar, neither is exactly good in combat. But since you can share spells, feel free to buff the heck out of them if you are a caster.
You might want to check out the Sea Singer bard as well, getting Bard buffs and a familiar might help you out quite a bit.
edit: Ninja'd by Galahad. Curses!

Using these modifications on your homunculus familiar and using the Master Craftsman feat to get the craft feats will get you a deadly familiar. The Evolved Familiar feat will get you an evolution to give it something the modifications will not.

Magus and Alchemist are both d8 classes and can get familiars. Familiar also use your BAB, which they get medium of.
Evolved Familiar is a good feat, as mentioned.
The Beast Bonded Witch archetype lets you use any feat you gain from levelling on your familiar, which could help, if you perhaps did a Witch/Fighter/Eldritch Knight.

The "Share Spells" ability allows you to use spells with a range of 'you' on your familiar, even if they're the wrong type. Combined with some of the weirder Improved Familiars, you could give an Outsider spells like 'enlarge person', 'alter self', 'shield', and 'true strike'. The biggest problem then is their bad HP...

What you talking 'bout Aelryinth?

If you're playing 3.5 and dual-classing, the ARcane Heirophant adds familiar powers to their animal companion, too.
My item was made to partially bridge the gap between a familiar and an eidolon.

Improved Familiar (7th level caster) Pseudodragon (Pathfinder Bestiary 229, or 3.5 Dungeon Mastery Guide I think) is nice.
Good AC, speed, & maneuverability for delivering touch spells, plus some spell abilities of its own & a poison sting & a bite that could be buffed (or coated with better poison) over time. And it has telepathy and Spell Resistance and immunity to paralysis or sleep, for what it's worth.
Avoiding multiclassing and level dipping is better for overcoming Spell Resistance and other caster level checks, and for being able to cast the best buff spells on yourself and familiar. But how important caster level is depends on the DM's encounter style and choice of foes.
Good luck!

I worked out a fairly dangerous familiar using the nuglub gremlin. Taking evolved familiar a few times and a few decent buffing spells and he's actually not bad. Mind you his main emphasis should be on cmb imo as hes got free shots with claws and bite and a very respectable racial boost to trip. Considered snagging one with a cavalier and using tandem trip for fun. Starting off at small lets him flank from the get go.
