Advice for a low lv Sorcerer?

Advice

One of my PCs made a tattooed sorcerer and *completely* messed it up. Ended up with a bear with 96 HP when we're all Lv 3. And for some reason thought his Arcane bloodline have him a +3 to everyone one of his skills. Ouch.

Anyway, this is the nuts and bolts of his guy:

-3rd Lv
-Tattooed Sorcerer
-Elf
-Arcane Bloodline
-Familiar: Hawk (a regular one, but a crazy monster one)

Does anyone have advice for building a low level sorcerer like this? Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Don't die.

Love freely, but do not let it blind you.

Wear sun screen lotion.

Keep some money in the bank; don't keep it all on hand.

Other than that, we need more specifics. What does he want to do with it?

Check his math.

Lol maybe I wasn't clear. Build stuff. Things like Stats and feats or anything related to building a sorcerer, say 1-8 lvs.

EDIT: Spells? Anything.

Seeing as how with even max rolls on HP he should be topping out around 18 hp (plus Con bonus of MAYBE +4 X3 if he stat dumped his CHR) We're looking at 30HP.
Something is seriously wrong in Sorcerer town.

Blaster?

Enchanter?

Battlefield control? etc etc

I said this in the duplicate thread, but this one seems more active.

Sage bloodline let's you use int instead of cha for your spells. Good for an elf sorcerer!

Avoid redundancy in spells. If you have scorching ray, you don't likely need acid arrow as well. Diversify what you know.

You don't get a lot of spells, so make sure you will have fun with that diverse list.

And check the math...

Good advice. You can change effects on the fly, but you don't get a ton of feats, so plan carefully.

I've used magic missile at 20th. Sometimes force damage is the best you can do. That was before toppling spell.

Your best build depends a lot on what any other casters in your party can do. You hang back and cast until things are under control. Cast the spells the other PCs can't. Damage spells are effective when they work, and you can spam them. Coordinate with other casters, so you don't have 3 people all trying to cast spells while the fighter didn't get a fly or displacement cast on her first.

Eh, sometimes I've prepared nothing but Scorching Ray and Acid Arrow, but at the point, we were assaulting a cave full of Trolls.

Here is an example off the top of my head that should be at least adequate. Other than switching the Arcane bloodline for the Sage bloodline (which will be identical for a tattooed sorcerer), I'm not changing any of the other choices listed, as I assume the player wants them for role-playing reasons.

Elf Tattooed Sorcerer 3
Bloodline: Sage (Arcane variant)
Tattoo familiar: Hawk

Feats: Improved Initiative, Toughness

15-point buy

str: 7
dex: 16 (14 + 2)
con: 12 (14 - 2)
int: 19 (17 + 2)
wis: 7
cha: 10 (sorcerers get a lot of good charisma based skills, so not dumping cha seems like a solid choice)

Obviously if you're a group that frowns on having super low ability scores, adjust to taste. As a new player, having low wisdom might fit the sorts of rash decisions new players often make anyway ;)

Spells:
0 - Detect Magic, Read Magic, Dancing Lights, Mage Hand, Prestidigitation
1 - Grease, Ear-piercing Scream, Silent Image, Identify (bloodline)

You've got a control spell targeting each save, one of which even does a little damage which, especially for a new player, probably will make things more fun ;)

Picking up Persistent Spell at level 7 or 9 will make your low level control spells into really nasty high level control spells, leaving your higher level spell slots open for other options.

As alluded to by a highly regarded expert (hehe) magic missile + toppling spell is a strong combo.

Yes... ...but if your preparing you're a wiazard and can afford such things. Sorcerers need to be more choosy.

I dont believe you can have Tatooed and Sage Variant. Both affect your level 1 Bloodline Power.

If you are taking a familiar I dont think I could recommend anything but the stupid dinosaur from Bestiary 2 which gives you +4 Initiative.

Compsagnathus is the best for sure. I was just trying to offer something that changed as little as possible from the players original build, I assume they made their choices for RP reasons and just needed a little boost to be effective. For maximal optimization the Dino is a stellar choice.

I just looked and I guess you are right as wild blooded (sage) is technically an archetype and thus conflicts with tattooed sorcerer. As a DM I would treat the wild blooded bloodlines the same a any other bloodline and allow them to be combined with tattooed sorcerer but I guess that would technically be a house rule.

To the OP if you don't want to house rule sage to work with tattooed, it would be slightly more effective if the player made a half-elf so they could put their stat bonus in cha (I assume he wants elf for RP again, obviously human is a very strong choice optimization-wise) or if they made an elf sage (non-tattooed) to take advantage of the int bonus. If they're super keen on elf tattooed arcane sorcerer it's not the end of the world, sorcerers have a lot of good skills so an int bonus doesn't hurt. Just make sure they have a high enough charisma.
