Barbarian Advice

Advice

I am currently playing an Invulnerable Rager Barbarian with an 18 Str, 18 Dex and 16 Con. I am absolutely planning on taking Combat Reflexes and Come and Get Me by 12th level, and would appreciate opinions / advise on whether it would be more advantageous to have a higher Dex or Str. The GM is a little cheap with the treasure and by extension what we can purchase at the local magic mart (which, from a roleplaying perspective suits my superstitious barbarian just fine), so I don't anticipate getting belts of physical perfection. My gut feeling is that it would be better to increase Dex and have more attacks, but would welcome other's opinions.

Strength would be my pick, as it boosts your ability to sunder, boosts your to-hit bonus, and also boosts your damage (At a 2:3 ratio if you're two-handing it, no less!). Having extra attacks is okay, but honestly if you're taking more than 4 separate attacks in a round then you're either being full attacked (Which boosting strength will probably let you drop within 4 hits) or you're facing a multitude of smaller opponents (Which is all about battlefield control, but dropping 4/round is still nice).

I think it comes down to playstyle.

If your dm likes encounters with multiple enimies who all move in to melee, then Dex, extra ac and AoOs is good....

However if your dm is more of a 1 big monster type, then Str for the increased damage and more importantly chance to hit. Also remember that with dazing assault you need to hit so a +1 to counter out that -5 penalty would be nice.

Also if you haven't done so pick up the quick reflexs rage power, and add two to Str and it's like getting both Dex and Str as far as tour AoOs are concerned.

Liberty's Edge

I'm with Trinam, strength all the way. 5 attacks of opportunity (not 4, you get extra attacks equal to your dex bonus, not total attacks equal to dex bonus) is more than enough if you're able to make them all count.

I'd have to agree with str, its unlikely you'll use that many aoo's in a round.

On a humerous side note i'm running a game with a similar player character who's eying up come and get me. I've also been rewriting a barbarian in an ap to also have come and get me, after doing some math i think i may have to change it as they will attack each other and time will explode due to aoo's generating aoo's. I think the highest dex wins in that case.

Strength, all day, everyday. Then Con, for hp and raging brutality and more rage, then, and only then, Dexterity. 18 is a fantastic amount already, if you full attack something and then send 5 attacks during their round on top of that, you won't need a 6th. Something has gone horribly wrong if you do.

I would argue higher initiative, with higher Dex then being the tie breaker if initiative is tied. It would be quite a conundrum if both initiative and Dex are tied though...

Looks like Str wins with some sound arguments. Thanks everyone.

I love to play barbarian and my group call them bubens but I kick some serious trash with my ability scores
Str 20
Con 16
Dex 10
Int 15
Wis 10
Cha 4
I use intimidate a lot so the cha penalty hurt but I rolled a 20 a 19 and then a 17 so I got a Critical instant kill on a marsh giant and the rest of my party died and my character didn't die so they try to kill me with their new characters but I win all the time.
