Can I enchant my Blackblade as a magus, or do I just rely on my arcane pool? Thanks :)

its not.

they dont state you can give it other stuff, so you cant. Its a class feature more than a traditional item.

If it is not stated I would take it that you can enchant it on top of what your spell pool gives it. Of course that will increase the ego of the item and if you did not do it early it is going to get very expensive.

I think the reason many people have issue with enchanting the black blade is that it has a nonstandard ego progression. Also, since it gains an enhancement bonus as you level (apart from arcane pool) there's some weird pricing/stacking issues.

there's also the fact that the black blade's enhancement bonus and the special ability bonus from the arcane pool add up to +10 at 17th level, which is the largest modifier you can get RAW, adding new enchants on top of this will end up making the weapon illegal

personally if i were GMing i'd allow 'reforging' the black blade's enhancement bonus to something else as long as it was the magus doing the reforging and the magus had the correct spells/feats/requirements for making a weapon with the ability in the first place.

One of my players is also talking about enchanting his black blade. I told him he could not because of the +10 thing. I was a bit confused about what material the blade is made of however. He wants an adamantine one of course. I wasn't sure if this was ok or not?

Question about the +10 thing:
Why do you keep mentioning it? The +5 comes from an entirely different ability. Also let's say a 17th level magus has a +5 holy scimitar, now he can use his arcane pool to add only +3 worth of enchantments in this weapon although he can add up to +5, so for example he can make his +5 holy scimitar a +5 holy scimitar of speed.

So what's the problem?

It is not stated, but the blade is magic as is, intelligent magic and not a normal item but a class feature.

I say no to enchanting it.

Magic Weapons: "A single weapon cannot have a modified bonus (enhancement bonus plus special ability bonus equivalents, including those from character abilities and spells) higher than +10."

It doesn't specifically say he can limit the amount of bonus from his Arcane Pool, and even if he can, most Magus aren't going to want to cap out their Arcane Pool ability at level 9.

Personally, I think that's less of an issue than figuring out the ego progression and pricing issues, but it depends on the DM I guess.

Are you saying that (because it doesn't specifically says so) that a magus (of any kind) can't use his arcane pool (which let's say that it adds +5) to an already +7 weapon?

About the ego and the pricing issues i agree but i just can't see how the +10 thing is an issue.

It could be read that way. The ability adds specifically a +4 or whatever, and a +8 weapon can't ever have an extra +4 on there, so it doesn't work. The same as Divine Bond.

Personally, I would just have any extra bonus (over +10) vanish rather than make the weapon illegal or whatever. Effectively removing class abilities because they have nice treasure doesn't seem right. But then again, I've never been in a high enough level game where people were even close to the +10 cap.

That is what the rules say yes. You cap at +10, no matter what source the enhancements come from. a +7 sword can only hold an extra +3, even though the class can give a +5. You max the weapon out at +10 and just lose the extra +2

Actually the rules don't specify what happens.

You could take it as either

A) Activate the ability, overflow gets discarded (+8 weapon with +5 ability becomes +10)

B) Because the ability would put the weapon over the legal cap, the ability cannot be used, at all, with the weapon. (Paladin calls Holy Bond on his +8 weapon, nothing happens at all, or the weapon implodes)

arcane pool

The Black Blade grows a steady enchantment up to +5 as it matures, if you enchant it, you wind up limiting the flexibility of the arcane pool as you can not go over the limits of +5/+5 in a non-epic weapon.

What about adding flat rate abilities?
