Ugh did I really need a box filled with the stupid peanuts for four soft cover books, the thickest of which was the AP issue?
I'm renewing the call to get rid of the peanuts! Airbags!!!!!!!! Or heck even those weird shaped cardboard thingies.
We use peanuts when it is appropriate, and the corners when it is appropriate. Despite knowing that a box full of peanuts is messy and really annoying, a box full of damaged books is much moreso. :) We have explored using airbags, but they have the dual problems of being more expensive and not protecting books as well as the peanuts.
Thanks,
cos

May be time for an alternative?
I like this alternative idea.
I was honestly surprised my softcovers didn't come in an envelope like they normally do.

May be time for an alternative?
The peanuts we use are 100% recycled material. (We do regularly look at new options.)

I was really hoping the alternative would be pistachios.

Well, the pistachio hulls, maybe, in some form.

It's all well and good until it kills somebody with a nut allergy....

...then it becomes HILARIOUS.

I'm just kidding. A person suffering from a severe nut allergy is no laughing matter.

Mmmm.... Peeps.
I hadn't had one of those things in years, but my son came home from Sunday School with a few in his Easter basket and I stole one. Then I had to go hit the after-Easter clearance at Walmart and buy me a whole box for 25 cents.
Oh, yeah, topic. I hate packing peanuts too, not least because my kids tend to get into them and scatter tiny pieces of styrofoam all over the house. But I saved up a couple of kitchen bags full and took them up to my local mailing-services storefront and they practically threw me a parade. So you can recycle them on your end too, customers!

If you use the cornstarch-based packing peanuts, they are both biodegradable and fun. Dampen them and stick them together to build stuff.

Those would be a great improvement over the regular Styrofoam peanuts, but how do they compare cost wise?

Share the wealth, man. ;)

Many moons ago, when I was pretending to be a telecom engineer, we had a vendor that sold us refurbished AT&T/Lucent phone sets.
The phones were shrinkwrapped in plastic/cellophane, and the box filler was M&Ms or Reese's.
I loved that vendor.
Sadly, they were so successful, a bigger company bought them, and decided that candy filler wasn't cool, and stopped.
I have yet to find anyone else doing anything on that scale. Today, a company called Retrotel sells refurbed stuff, and will include a packet of M&M's or Peanut M&M's with each Nortel phone set that we buy, which is cool, but not nearly as many M&Ms :(

I know m&ms melt in your mouth, not your hand, but I don't think they make any claims about in boxes on the porch.

That WOULD be cool.
Not sure they would generate enough.
