The hexcrafter archetype of the magus adds all of the curse spells in the game to the magus' spell list.
However, many of these spells are shared by different classes, and the archetype is silent as to what spell levels each one should be considered when ported over to the magus spell list.
Is bestow curse a 3rd-level spell (like a cleric), or is it a 4th-level spell (like a wizard)?
Since magi can only cast up to 6th-level spells, should we assume you use the lowest spell level shown in the spell description?
What's the RAW on this?

APPENDIX to the rescue !
hehehe flick to page 251
lists new descriptors for old spells :)
Curse: bestow curse, blindness/deafness, brand, brand
(greater, crafter’s curse, cup of dust, feast of ashes,
geas (lesser), geas/quest, ill omen, mark of justice, nature’s
exile, oracle’s burden, rest eternal.
As for level go with lowest not being a full caster already puts them behind power wise

Yeah, I had found that on my own. It's the missing spell levels that I want to know about.

unless I'm mistaken nothing on that list is over 6th level , considering Magus can add wiz spells of the equivalent level thing I think its a fair call to use wiz/cleric levels as the transfer level.

Except not all the spells come from the sor/wiz lists. What's more, many of them share multiple class lists, with no explanation as to which one to use (case and point BESTOW CURSE).

as for bestow curse as suggested I recommend going with cleric level. As for other spells just pick the level from the equivalent levels available, which is basically whatever is the lowest.
Sure it could use a FAQ to tighten it up, but I can't see any way taking the lowest level option would cause problems, in which case just go with lowest option available.

I would assume you use the level that the Witch gets it at, since the whole concept is based on the Witch. If the witch doesn't get it, then I have no clue.
Just started playing a hexcrafter and I think what Cheapy says makes a lot of sense. Only a couple of the spells mentioned above aren't on the witch list. This is what I'm going with at the moment;
0 - brand
1 – ill omen, crafter's curse
2 – blindness/deafness, feast of ashes, disfiguring touch
3 – bestow curse, cup of dust, nature's exile
4 – lesser geas, curse of magic negation, greater brand
5 – mark of justice, rest eternal, major curse, curse of disgust
6 - geas

Man this book has some sloppy writing. Any developer clarification on this yet? Need an update over at the Hero Lab forums so the HL data file can be clarified.

So you get a bunch of FREE spells and yet you guys still look for ways to justify getting them at the lowest spell level?
I would assume since Hexcrafter is an archtype of Magus, you would use the spell level of the wizard/sorcerer(since you know, everything else is based of this). Why would you use the cleric list if you can pick the same spell from the wizard/sorcerer list? That's just cheese.
One can assume the free curse spells were meant to come only from the wizard/sorcerer list. But the text isn't clear, so I can understand taking the lowest spell level version in those cases.

Correction: One can assume only free curse spells from arcane origins would be valid.

Apologies in advance for the necro, but the first post in this thread is marked as "Answered in the FAQ" but I can't find anything in the FAQ that answers the question. Where was this answered officially?
I think that was before the No Answer Needed and Question Unclear functions of the FAQ were devised.

Has to be Witch as base, nothing else makes sense.
Which ones are not on the Witch list? And more importantly why aren't they!
Curses aren't unique to the witch class. One such spell which isn't on the witch list is Brand, but that only appears on the inquisitor list, so it's obvious what level the hexcrafter casts it at. I think you could also make the case that the hexcrafter casts these spells at the wizard level because the magus class itself is essentially a fighter/wizard hybrid. Even though it's not an official source, I think it's worth mentioning that Hero Lab uses the wizard levels.
More importantly, the whole reason why I bumped this thread was because the OP is marked as answered in the FAQ when it doesn't appear to be.
