So our newly formed group decides to run "The Godsmouth Heresy" module (very fun.) There's only 3 of us, so as a GM I say "why not start a level up?" So the party is a 2nd level Paladin, Inquisitor, and buffing Cleric. Right about the point I think that they're going to run through this with no problems, they run into a swarm of diminutive creatures. Being immune to weapon damage, the swarm proceeds to run rampant on everyone. That is, until the Cleric has the idea to light himself on fire. He proceeds with his idea and runs through the swarm just killing them before he burns to death (Yay spontaneous cure spells). This only proves the point that swarms, like ninjas can't catch you if you're on fire.

Cover yourself in gasoline, light yourself on fire and try to run around for 6 seconds...
Well, I'm not an Adventurer, or professional comabatant with magic healing powers.
Religious fanatics and protesters absolutely do this in the real world (though they tend to die), and I see no problem with a character doing it in game.
I would probably have him make a single, say, DC 15 Will Save to actually do the lighting (that being a bit hardcore, even with all the above said), though. He could retry every round until he succeeded, but if he failed that would still be his action for the round. Should reflect mustering the courage to do it fairly well. It'd definitely be a Fear-based effect, though, so 3rd level Paladins could do it sans rolls.

If he/she were a Cleric of Asmodeus, Sarenrae or any other deity that grants Fire domain I would rule an autopass on this save...
...actually, if that was a Cleric of Flauros I would rule a Will save in order to be able to put the fire out...

Ooh, definite point. I wouldn't auto-pass them, but I'd definitely throw in a big Circumstance Bonus, probably +4 or so. Bear in mind that even most low-level Clerics are gonna have a +5-+8 Will Save anyway, so they've got real good odds of passing.
And of course you auto-pass if you have enough Fire Resistance to ignore the coming damage and know it. If you have any Fire Resistance at all you'd get a bonus (probably add your Resistance as a Circumstance Bonus).
So Tiefling Clerics of Asmodeus lighting themselves on fire probably isn't an unusual sight...

Oh that's a great one.
*Tiefling Cleric sets him self on fire*
"AAAAARGH!" *Bluff check for faking pain* "BEHOLD! The Prince of Darkness wrought me in flames for my sins against his faith! So shall you burn as well, if you ever stray from the only path! Be vigilant in your reverence to Asmodeus, or else you will face his fiery judgement!"
"Heh", thought the Tiefling. "Those stupid morons really think this hurts me. If only they knew..."

Only question I have is... how did this cleric set himself on fire? You've got a six-second round. While clothes might be flammable they're not going to just suddenly combust because someone whacked a flint & tinder at them. Further if this cleric is using spells to heal himself, he has to make a Concentration check each time because he's taking constant damage throughout a round.
I'm all for thinking outside of the box. I just like to use the rules to do so.

Just because I have access to antibiotics doesn't mean that I eat Anthrax milkshakes, and a rollercoaster is still thrilling, even though you're strapped in. Even if there's a rational part of the brain that knows, there's another, more well-wired and basic part that says "fire bad."

I love this idea! I was in a highish level group (10th) that ran into a trap that create swarms of ants or beetles. We had just lost our magic user one or two games back. We had a bard, cleric/fighter and a scout. And not one of us had any kind of AOE spells. My bard was all about buff spells, or illusion spells. Not even any flasks of oil. We ended up doing a combo of fire wall and gusts of wind. Just dumb luck that I had those scrolls.
I like your idea. And its a color thing. I've played with many a GM/DM that will give you points for being creative.
Couldn't he have just tossed oil on them and then light them? Burn a few torches? And don't you know you light the fighter on fire and let him run in there.

At least he earns points for creativity. How did you handle it mechanically? I'd give you like 1d6 burn effect or something similar. He would also need to make some concentration checks too on those spontaneous cure spells as being on fire is somewhat er...distracting. Honestly a torch could of been just as effective if not as hilarious.

In two separate games with completely different groups of players, I have had PC reaction to a fellow PC covered in swarms be, "okay, I cast shatter on him, breaking all of the flasks of acid and alchemist's fire he's carrying". Both times have successfully killed the swarm. Both shatter-victims have survived the process of being drenched in acid and/or fire.

As the cleric in question, I feel the need to come to the aid of my rookie DM. A few points of clarification I believe are in order.
I set myself on fire by diving onto a fire set in the square next to me, which was a fire set by oil and a crossbow loaded with a bolt that was flaming, when the swarm was eating me. They had been shying away from fire we had set earlier in the fight and it was my idea to try and get them caught. And while I did do a concentration check for the healing, we admittedly did not think of the will save. Altogether though it was hilarious at the time and loads of fun.
Also, another point of hilarity was that I did not light the oil by shooting the bolt at the at the square, but by passing through the square while nauseated and dropping the entire crossbow onto the square.

Agreed! It doesn't matter what 'reality' you are talking about, There is a line between meta-gaming and roleplaying. In this case, the player is doing it out of complete meta-gaming with no roleplaying at all. Come on, would your character really purposefully light himself on fire or would the more sensible thing to do be run the heck out of there? Unless someone came up with a really exceptional and clearly defined reason why his/her character would do this, then I would not allow this without severe penalties. Absolute garbage gaming IMO!

I would have him roll a will save every round to start rolling on the ground and try to put himself put. No normal person would actually light himself on fire...that's ridiculous.
I have a vague memory from college where I won $10 doing just that. But maybe that just says I am not normal...

Thanks for the clarification. Not that anyone needs or even wants my approval, you did it right. I wouldn't bother with a Will save personally as DM. PCs do such heroic crazy stuff every day that normal people wouldn't consider. Self-immolation is just another aspect of the same personality that faces down trolls, dragons, and intelligent undead.

Self immolation probably isn't something most people would contemplate, but it's happened enough in real life that I don't see how you could say it's ridiculous.

Not to be a spoiler or anything, but was a module way back in the past that had an encounter with someone with a ring of fire resistance, several flasks of oil dumped on them, and lit up to attack the players as a flaming attacker.
So tactically lighting yourself on fire to fight enemies does have some past support.

My point is you're rude enough to call someone elses game garbage. Not just tell them, politely, civilly, that you think what happened was over the top. So I'm rude enough to call you out on it. If I said, in my opinion your a raging moron, it doesn't make it ok that I posted it as an opinion now does it?
