The only downside is that children have learned that the quickest way to get sent home if they're just feeling like spending the day at home with Mom is to say, "Miss LM, my throat feels funny when I swallow and I feel hot."

Kids are a******s.

Kids are cunning.

Why, yes, of course they want to work less, enjoy more fun experiences, and spend time with the ones they love. This is normal human things.

What kids are not is (much like adults) fully cognizant of the consequences of their behavior, either socially (or if they are, they don't care because they value it less than their personal experiences; this would be the "jerk" or similar nomenclature in play, due to a lack of developed empathy) or over-all (as side-effects beyond one or two steps becomes exceptionally difficult for literally everyone, but especially when you have no experience with it).

Man, though. That's... not a pleasant thing to go through. Socially distant hugs.

I swear, is there anything as frustrating as friends or relatives who won't listen to you?

I'm 1152 days sober now. On my 50th birthday my mother-in-law gave me a $1500 bottle of scotch that I proceeded to share with others because I wouldn't drink it. We've talked about the story multiple times, and I've told her multiple times I don't drink any more.

So she came over last night, and gifted me a bottle of scotch, and kept asking me why I wouldn't drink any champagne.

It's beyond frustrating.

... yep.

NobodysHome wrote:

Well, it's a running frustration with her. She's been told that I no longer want to receive physical presents of any sort. So every birthday/Christmas/other event she gives me a card and 3-4 books because, "They're just books!"

They get dumped straight into the donation bin unread.

Then she keeps trying to buy me liquor, which I accept because GothBard enjoys scotch.

But the sheer chutzpah to continue to foist crap on a man who has repeatedly said, "PLEASE stop! Do not give me ANYTHING physical! EVER! For any reason!" is just frustrating as all heck...

Yep.

And for her, if it's not a physical gift, it doesn't count.

We are at an impasse.

My parents are the same way. They hate giving cash, gift cards, or other practical gifts as it's "lazy" and "greedy", but won't take no for an answer when physical gifts are concerned.

Like when they sent Scint a Xmas gift despite her clearly saying "no gifts please, I'm in the middle of moving and have enough boxes to deal with". Nope, they ordered her stuff from Amazon based on half of a heard conversation between her and me and it showed up on her doorstep literally halfway thru moving packing.

YEEEEEP

Every birthday, holiday, other celebration; "Now, we know you've said you don't want any more gifts, but..."

if you know why are you handing me thing; yes I like it, but stop it

NobodysHome wrote:

Please do not add to my burden in any way, shape, or form by either giving me things or by giving me gift cards to try to force me to buy things. Give me nothing but your company. Why is that so hard for you to comprehend?"

A century or two of marketers saying, "If you don't give something physical, you don't actually care," are to blame, I'm sure.

You know, a lot of people say this, but I don't think marketers are at all to blame. I do think they contribute, but it's unfair to suggest that they are at fault, as a whole - I think they exploit a thing that people have, but do not manufacture it.

I think it has to do with the differing ways of looking at stuff. A really solid book on this concept is The Five Love Languages. While it undoubtedly isn't the be-all/end-all of everything, it really opened my eyes to something that should have been (and in some ways is) exceptionally basic: different people communicate love in different ways.

This concept - and putting it in action - has been really revolutionary in some ways for me.

... but as obvious as it is, it's worth noting that there are people who either don't understand it, or don't want to understand it, or who can't for all sorts of reasons. And by, "there are people" I mean, "Pretty much everyone at some point or another fails to really understand what's going on in the heart of someone else and how best to reach that."

Sometimes that failure is persistent.
Sometimes it is correctable.
Sometimes it's a major character flaw or personality defect.
Sometimes it's just a weakness.

It is really frustrating to deal with, though.

I usually settle for recognizing, "This is because they actually care. It's not the thing they should do, but, eh. Not like I'm a saint." and use whatever frustrating I have from someone else improperly trying to tell me that they love and care for me into trying to improve myself, 'cause without question I know that I've plenty of room for improvement.

Glass houses throwing rocks and all that.

It's okay! I use my actual browser history as a kind of notepad to remember things I actually find important or wanna go back to, so I'm usually running incognito mode anyway (which, I think, Vagrant has previously indicated was almost exclusively for erotica-and-related anyway), so I'm probably fine!

The process started much-much earlier, even before anyone dreamt of the capitalism. For a long time gift-giving was sign of generosiy, which was one of the important parts of virtue in vastly different cultures (all around the world basically). Gift-giving was also a sign of power - higher stations were expected to be generous to their followers and to their peers. It's quite deep part of social conditioning, deeper than mere two hundred years.

Exactly!

Man you would be surprised by how differently all sorts of medical treatment and well most treatment in general varies between states. Sometimes I feel America is like a bunch of little countries all crammed together.

I mean, America is actually a bunch of big and little nations spread across two continents.

But the USA is, in fact, a bunch of little countries all crammed together.

It's in the name.

U.nited
S.tates
(of)
A.merica

And here TL goes into a long ramble about US Politics; but don't take his word for it - go read up on it yourself!:

Each state is a nation and each nation a state.

(You can see this in various other linguistic elements, as well. ADD is a heckuva thing, though, because literally every time I've come up with an example, I shift here to type it, and forget the example, my mind replacing it with "State of the Union" as in the address that the President gives or "State of the Art" as in the newest and presumptively most advanced/best technological expression of a thing, neither of which is actually the words I'm looking for. Thanks, brain.)

It is why, for example, Californians mock Texans, Texans mock New Yorkers, and all mock and are mocked by, Floridians. This is identical in nature to the national rivalries between, say, Poland and Lithuania. Or Britain and Ireland.
For clarity: the exact expression of the conflict between these groups is vastly, vastly different - my intent is not to conflate actual events or people groups or make parallels that are obviously not there.

The difference is that our "miniature" nations (some of which are small, some of which are quite large) all have an overriding organizational - "national" (today it would have been called a "metanational") - body which orders and controls them, i.e. the U.S. Federal Government.

Thus Californians can appeal to the "higher" authority to rebuke (and, presumptively, enact sanctions against) a fellow nation, such as, say, Florida, who is also subject to that Federal Government for any sort of perceived misbehavior.

Federal authority was definitively established as such realy only during the US Civil War, though intentionally it was made much more authoritative than our "original" governing body, the Articles of Confederation, which was weak enough to not actually be able to do anything (literally requiring the states' permission to act on their behalf created so weak because the rebelling colonies didn't want to be controlled by a "foreign" national power and didn't want to accidentally create one). That overarching Federal v. State power eventually came to a head over the issue of whether or not said overarching governmental body could legislate major moral/ethical/financial decisions in the specific case, slavery or lack thereof for the states that made up the Union governed by that Federal power.
(States engaged in their legally-granted right to secede from the Union as they did not want to lose their autonomous ability to engage in a major economic action, i.e. the morally corrupt practice of slavery... a right and autonomy - and secession - which was then revoked with great prejudice prudent force for a great number of reasons - some of them even morally upright! - thereby cementing the Federal government as the absolute ruling body, and establishing the power of the Federal government over previously hypothetically-autonomous "states." No, I deeeeeeefinitely don't see any modern parallels or consequences, shut up, also hush.)

All of this comes out of the need for a centralized authority opposed by the deep distrust of said centralized authority due to various abuses used against them. Hence we get into the division of power (executive/legislative/judicial) that makes up virtually every governing body from the top down, but that Centralize v. Localized division is a single (if important) expression still currently debated and leaned into today.

This division of power into locality v. centralization of authority is one push-and-pull that can be seen across US history, and explains much about our culture, history, politics, and even general divisional lines.

I just finished Deep Sky Derelics.

A neat game of scavenging ancient spaceships for working devices and sellable trash. A weird combo of a tactical and a card game that becomes more and more popular. Think Darkest Dungeon meets Slay The Spire in a retor-futuristic settings.

Music is excellent. Graphics and conversations build a rather grim but humoristic setting. Regretfully, most of loot is crap to be sold with only occasionally useful thing that you will keep for yourself (and later ditch when it gets obsolete after a few levels).

Theoretically the game replay value lies in getting a squad of completely different classes, but I am a bit afraid that without some of things my first squad had and I learned to rely on (primarily powerful AoE attack that Miner can learn midgame) might make a new game tedious.

Speaking of things that infuriate me, as a long-time Linux/Unix/Windows/MacOS user, people who don't know which way the slashes go and act like it doesn't matter drive me NUTS.

NO! It is NOT C:/LabData/MyFile, no matter how much you want it to be!

There are instances where the slash gets reversed to support certain languages (I want to say Java, but I'm too lazy to double-check), but when you're telling me, "In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:/LabData/MyFile" I just want to slap you.

Yes, it matters THAT much. Because it HAS mattered for 40+ years now...

browser goes /

file system goes \

user goes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s like you know me.

there is a certain meme video making the rounds that I cannot help but think is indicative of what Tacticslion being corrupted would look like.

I made it to chapter 3 in Final Fantasy 7, I was in a cut scene (the one where Barrett makes his big speech on the train) and the General walks by and says "Did they write the dialogue in 1995 or something?" "Yup!".
