No, winter is here (we had snow yesterday morning)

Not complaining, that's for sure, at least it waited until almost thanksgiving this year, last year it was on Halloween.

That extra three weeks helps. :-)

Too late. I already exist.

I almost destroyed the world, too. But then I got to surfing 4chan and decided I would be doing humanity a favor by destroying human civilization.

First cold day of the winter. And by cold I mean it got below 60 which was nice. :-D

That was last week here. :-)

So far no measurable snow in the forecast. :-(

Internet was down when I woke up (obviously it's working now), so I put in one of my old Cowboy Bebop DVDs. Now I'm wondering why I haven't watched them for a few years.

Maybe I'll watch Evangelion again sometime soon. Hopefully it holds up.

Shodan is the first black belt rank, and widely considered to be the place where you begin training in earnest. Although I have a physical test for this on December 2nd, Aikido is not solely a physical art. As a lead up for my test, I've had to submit essays on a number of topics.

This one in particular is kicking my ass. I'm supposed to talk about shuchu ryoku, or forcused power, but it's a concept that I don't fully grasp. I'm pretty sure that this sort of focus is the main thing currently missing from my aikido, the thing that I'm most struggle with. How do you bring all the body's power with you, focusing it in a small point, so that you are not doing aikido with brawn, but with attention?

If you can get the focus, you can empower movements and make them tremendously effective... But this is something that eludes me, over and over. I feel like it's something that I approach superficially -- learning to position a body part in balance, to bring my hip into a movement, basically trying to align my body for each technique... I'm approaching it like a jig saw puzzle, where I have only some of the pieces. I have an idea of what the big picture is like, but I cannot fully see it.

I don't understand yet how moving with focus can be done every time. This is something I'm learning piece by tiny piece. It's both a struggle and a challenge... How do I convey this?

Hmm

EDIT: Maybe I just did. Back to the essay!

Hoo, boy!

Be sure to attend seminars, and try to attend them with shihan.

I still remember training with Ikeda sensei. You would watch as other people walked up to him, touched him, and fell down. You thought, "This is some kind of gimmick!"
Then you walked up and touched him, and your legs vanished from under you, and you were on the ground.

The most amazing thing do me was sitting around with the other non-udancha wondering what the heck was going on, as our udancha (all 4th don and above) were pointing at him saying, "Ooooh! Did you see the way his hips moved right there?"

No. No, I didn't.

The funniest part is that I'm built like a fire plug: Short, thick, and extremely muscular. You'd think a throwing art like aikido would be perfect for me.

But 3 years of intensive (22+ hours/week) training in tae kwon do and I was competing at the national collegiate level.

5 years of less-intensive training (12 hours/week) in Aikido and I knew enough to know that I stunk...

Sometimes it's less your build and just the way your body works. But that is rare.

Grrrrrrr...

Netflix just cancelled:

- Farscape
- Ouran Highschool Host Club
- Power Puff Girls
- Robin Hood ('73)
- The Truman Show
- The 'Burbs
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
- Legally Blonde (both)
- Escape to Witch Mountajn
- E.T.

It's like they're trying to personally spite any and all of my things I'd planned on watching over the next few months.

So, you all know I'm pretty darned Lawful when it comes to rules and laws that exist for a purpose. (Because we all know that there are many, many stupid laws out there.)

This is the kind of thing that crushes your soul working for a megacorporation:
August 31: OK, stakeholders! We're producing a new course covering all of your content. Here's the design. Please review it and make sure we're doing justice to your area of expertise...
Silence... chirping crickets...

October 17: OK, you three: Here's the content on your sections. You have two weeks to propose any changes.
Silence... chirping crickets...

Publication Time: We're now publishing the course. As a courtesy, since we have heard nothing from you, here is the final version of the course because we need your final signoff. Silence will be taken as tacit approval.
PM: OMG NO!!!! You need an entire new chapter on this teensy little feature because it's SOOOOO important! And no! I absolutely, positively, WILL NOT APPROVE this content until you put it in!

======
If I ruled the universe, the employee (me) could forward the three e-mails to the PM's manager and have him instantly fired for ignorance/incompetence.

Instead, I've been ordered to put in the content.

*SIGH*

I was totally bummed when Netflix canceled New BSG, and got bummed all over again when I fell in love with a woman who's never seen it.

Oh well, I'll just have to buy the things, it was going to happen eventually anyway.

Ouch! I hope it's a regular staff infection, and not the bad stuff (says the guy who's had MRSA over ten times - that s+&~ is tough to make go away permanently).

Were it actually mine, I may well have* - the Farscape is by far the biggest loss**, but everything else stings, too*** - but it's not actually my Netflix; rather, my (recently-minted! :D) sister-in-law-in-law (then my brother-in-law's fiance) found it criminal that we had no television of any stripe, and so created an account on her Netflix for us.

So... not really an option on my end - as far as I'm aware, her shows in particular are not touched. We do still have other options, though, which is nice. It's just that they almost literally picked all the things I was explicitly going to watch in the near future.

>:I

So instead of being able to do anything productive, I'll gripe about it here on FaWtL to my friends and my wife.

:I

* It saves money and time!

** My wife and I were trying to do, "Farscape Fridays" in preparating for Starfinder and/or Legendary Planet. She'd, sadly, never had the opportunity to see the show.

*** Though E.T. and The Truman Show are also nearly tragic, I own the latter and have seen the former enough; similarly, PPG, the Legally Blonde films, and Ouran Highschool Host Club are in the, "Dang it. That's just too bad." category as I've see most of all of them; and the rest are either nostalgia or curiosity.

The kids decided to be jerks (demanding candy, constantly asking to do stuff, and other general rudeness, usually not a problem with Pea Bear and Tiny T-Rex) at the grandparents house on Sunday so we didn't get Iron Gods, then last night the dog kept stealing my covers and generally keeping me awake and cold. So I've been running at half capacity today, so no dice today, but I'm going to get a good night's sleep, I have a blanket stashed on my side in case of the inevitable blanket theft, so I'm hopeful for tomorrow night.

If not tomorrow then Wednesday.
