So, I have been crusing the forums for awhile and I see a lot of acronyms and pathfinder specific terms. I think we should get a list going personally.
BBEG: Big bad evil guy?
Venture Captain: Regional PFS(PathFinder Society) cordinator?Lets throw more out there for me and other people.
BBEG is a general term from Buffy and screenwriting that has crossed over into gaming due to similarities.

I hate acronyms in general. Extended usage of them prohibits communication, and people feel dumb asking what they mean.
So I like this thread already.
The most common, everyone probably knows these. Using these is usually not prohibitive.:
BAB: Base Attack Bonus
GM: Game Master
PC: Player Character
NPC: Non-Player Character (usually run by the GM)
AC: Armor Class
DR: Damage Reduction
APG: Advanced Player's Guide
CRB: Core Rulebook
Less common, usually analytical:
MAD: Mulitple Ability Dependant (Characters that rely an many ability scores)
SAD: Single Ability Dependant (Characters that rely on only one ability score)
DPR: Damage Per Round (a calculation meant to define combat effectiveness, including miss chances and crit chances)
CDG: Coup de Grace (rarely used in the forums)
PB: Point Blank (for Ranged Weapons within 30 feet)
PBS: Point Blank Shot (a Feat for use at Point Blank range)
TWF: Two-Weapon Fighting (a fighting style)
THF: Two-Handed Fighting (another fighting style)
IUS: Improved Unarmed Strike (a Feat for use with unarmed strikes)
WF/WS: Weapon Focus / Weapon Specialization (Feats)
PrC: Prestige Class (extended classes that have prerequisites for entry)
AA: Arcane Archer (a PrC. usually. You might find different usages in Off-Topic threads)
EK: Eldritch Knight (another PrC)
Random:
FAWTL: Forums Are Way Too Long
PBP: Play By Post (A game run on the forums)
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary
I'll stop there for now.

PVP: Player vs. Player
EHP: Evil High Priest
SA: Sneak Attack
PA: Power Attack
SoS: Save or Suck (I fist saw these in some wizard is batman guide for 3.5)
SoD: Save or Die (I fist saw these in some wizard is batman guide for 3.5)
3.5 3.5 rules system owned by wizards, including many add-ons. Some of it was OGL.
OGL: Open gaming license

It took me a while to figure these out:
RAW = Rules as Written
RAI = Rules as Intended (also seen interpreted)
IMO = In My Opinion
IMHO = In My Humble OpinionIf I think of others I'll drop them later.
I've always seen IMHO as "In my Honest Opinion" (cause y'know sometimes opinions are dishonest >.>)
only one I can think of, but haven't seen on this forum is:TLDR: Too long, Didn't read.

Just remembered that for an ultra-noob these are pretty important.
Str or STR = Strength statistic
DEX or Dex = Dexterity statistic
CON or Con = Constitution statistic
INT or Int = Intelligence statistic
WIS or Wis = Wisdom statistic
CHA or Cha or I've even seen CHR and Chr = Charisma statistic
Also very Pathfinder specific
CMB = combat maneuver bonus
CMD = combat maneuver defense

Here's a few Terms
Devs (Developers)
Cheesecake (gratuitous sex-appeal artwork)
Rules Lawyer (a couple different interpretations to Benign: Someone who knows the rules extremely well to Malign: Someone who uses the written rules as loopholes to gain the upper hand in gameplay)
Also a few more Acronyms I forgot
SKR: Sean K. Reynolds
JJ: James Jacobs
JB: Jason Buhlman

OP = Original Poster (When I first saw it I thought it was derogatory for Old Player.)
I generally use it to mean Original Post actually (rather then the person who made the original post).
PEACH was a good idea on the WotC boards, but I agree it is unnecessary here.
Sometimes seen:
WTH - What the heck (hell)
WTF - What the .... (rhymes with duck)
seems similar but really isn't:
WTG - Way to Go
| MendedWall12 |
Just got reminded of these while reading another thread.
ORLY = (as far as I know anyway) Oh Really...
STFU = Shut the (rhymes with duck) up
NOOB or Noob or NEWB or Newb = Newbie/Noobie: used as a, more often than not, derogatory term for someone who has just started playing the game and doesn't quite know as much as those that have been playing for longer periods of time.

I could NOT agree more! I HATE all the random acronyms on message boards, in e-mail etc!
Posts with multiple acronyms like these tend to make my skin crawl a little, to be honest. If what you are typing is worth saying, it should be worth the extra 5 seconds it takes to actually type it out!
Stepping off my soapbox now ... :)

ROTFLMAOFDTSBAMLATAWNSU - Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off Falling Down The Stairs Breaking All My Legs And The Ambulance Will Not Show Up
AYBABTU - All your base are belong to us
MTIS - Madness? This is Spartaaaaaaa
IAACLRISIIT - I am a compulsive liar. Really, I swear it is true.
IRTLOISOEIGTHA - It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.
I don't believe in half-hearted abbreviation. Abbreviation is far too long a word for that.
| KaeYoss |
LMAO = laugh my ass off
LOL = laugh out loud
OMG = oh my god
ROLF = roll on the floor
ROLF = Roll On The Floor? Is that a Cockney Rhyming Abbreviation or something? Or French? Roll on Le Fleur?
Plus, it's very important to remember that LOL does NOT mean "Lots of love". You can get really weird reaction when you write things like "I hear your mother died LOL!"

A roll in the flowers dosen't sound bad mind you.
But I think I know where they were going
At least I think they weren't talking about Rolf-ing.

Thanks for this thread. I'm a n00b to Pathfinder (though I used to play D&D 20+ years ago), so I was searching for what some of the common acronyms around here stand for.
But as an old timer (both to D&D and the internet), I'm surprised how many of you weren't quite right about the origins of some of the more common acronyms. For instance:
DM - Dungeon Master: leftover from 3.5, is now GM Game Master.
Almost, but not quite. DM is leftover from 1974, when it was the standard term in the world's first RPG. And it still is, in the latest version of that RPG. Other RPGs, including Pathfinder, have always used GM or some similar term instead, to avoid copyright issues.
Speaking of which, I'm surprised these acronyms weren't mention in this thread:
RPG - Role Playing Game
D&D - The world's oldest role playing game
4e - 4th edition of D&D

The debate about whether the H in IMHO stands for "humble" or "honest" was already getting old when I first started using the internet regularly 20 years ago.

Shouldn't that be SAB, for "Sneak Attack, B****!" ?
