This wasn't intended to be an intelligent discussion of any of the following, was it?
- The viability of the ranger class as it compares to other classes who share its role(s)
- Appearances of iconic rangers throughout mythology and media, and the ability of the Pathfinder ranger to emulate these figures
- The contributions a ranger can make to the typical or atypical adventuring party, and/or how its addition to the group can adjust mechanical dynamics of dungeon delving
- A thoughtful examination of particular class features and how they relate to the system as a whole
Because, if so, you might want to expand on "discuss" a bit more.

Yes, what you said.

Although I would point out that 1 spell in the APG makes a spell-less ranger less than awesome. Instant enemy. Yes, it does what you think it does. Oh and it's cast as a swift action. Rangers ARE awesome. =D

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
where are rangers the MOST AWESOMEST?
easy, urban campaigns or underdark campaigns. why? favored terrain of course. let's take an urban campaign for instance.
once you hit level 12, good ol' camouflage (Ex) kicks in. duck into an empty alley and stealth. waltz out into the middle of the street stealthily, and guess what? someone could be standing right next to you and not see you. regular vision, dark vision, detect magic (as long as you have no magic or have used a nice nondetection), doesn't matter. they better roll a perception check to beat your stealth check.
+12 ranks, +6 skill focus, +4 stealthy, +3 class skill, +4 favored terrain, +5 dex* = +34 stealth check at level 12 without any magic items in play. AND YOU CAN DO IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET! WITHOUT MAGIC!
how awesome is that?
*i'm assuming a 20 dex from 15 to start +2 racial +3 levels
PS don't even get me started on hide in plain sight (Ex)

Our ranger died when we were rushed in difficult terrain, and the "squishy babysitter network" failed. Ranger AC sucks. Great damage output though. Would rather have a ranger than a rogue in the party any day. As glass cannons go, they are pretty great.
Difficult terrain is one of the Ranger's best friends. With the spell Feather Step in his arsenal and the use of some of his other spells, a good Ranger should be trying to create difficult terrain for himself to fight in.

And thanks to the APG, Shield Master at level 6! I can't wait to try out a dual light-spiked-bashing-shield guide-ranger. I'd go dual heavy-spiked-bashing-shields, but I wouldn't have a free hand. :'(
took me a few minutes to figure out where you were going with this, and i suspect that a lot of gaming groups might feel this exits the realm of awesome and enters the realm of cheese. heh. though they did take improved two weapon fighting off the list of bonus feats, so i guess it's not that bad. i have to give that a highly provisional awesome.

angryscrub |
so, it's way less sexy, but endurance is still awesome. no fatigue after sleeping in medium armor. i mean seriously, do all the other fighter types wear enchanted fruit of the looms? no, they get caught with their armor down*.
not to mention the ranger can go longer and harder when it comes to physical activity. it's the equivalent of a +8 to con for checks that determine how big of pansies all the other classes are. ranger haters will be left in the dust. awesome.
*for those that handwave this away, you can try to nerf the rangers awesomeness, but instead you are just a finger pointing at the moon

Rangers are cool; and by cool, I meant totally sweet.
FACTS:
1. Rangers are mammals.
2. Rangers fight ALL the time.
3. The purpose of the Ranger is to flip out and kill people.
Rangers can kill anyone they want! Rangers cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this ranger who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the ranger killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a ranger totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window.
And thats what I call REAL Ultimate Power!!!!!
If you don't believe that rangers have REAL Ultimate Power you better get a life right now or they will chop your head off!!! It's an easy choice, if you ask me.
Rangers are sooooooooooo sweet that I want to crap my pants. I can't believe it sometimes, but I feel it inside my heart. These guys are totally awesome and that's a fact. Rangers are fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I love rangers with all of my body (including my pee pee).

Wow, I haven't looked at that since I was in grade school.
On a more topically-defined subject, how do current players of the Ranger feel the class holds up in the system? What are perceived shortcomings? Defined strengths?

You want an awesome ranger?
This is awesome but looking through it, is it more powerful than a core Ranger?

Dragonsong |

My favorite Rangers.
You sir or madam are a sick individual!
Unless you are speaking specifically about this ONE ranger then you are awesome!

Kirth Gersen wrote:You want an awesome ranger? This is awesome but looking through it, is it more powerful than a core Ranger?
Seriously? It's way, way better. It's everything the core ranger has, plus bonuses from many of the archetypes, plus all of the goodies from the horizon walker, plus additional spellcasting, plus more feats (or sneak attack), plus a few spell-like abilities thrown in for good measure.
It's a interesting write up, but it's very obvious that it's either designed for an incredibly high powered game or by someone who doesn't see the value of the PF ranger and felt they needed serious boosting.

For those of you who are unaware Kirth has been tweaking classes so that all of them are "tier 1". I would hazard a guess that anyone using his variants will likely never complain that "pure casters are so much more powerful than melee types".

Aaah, that makes a lot more sense. Building based on the tier system explains a lot of this.

I actually had a hard time finding a pic of the originals that I could access at work, so I just went with that one. The first season and the first movie remain my favorites.

Oh I think I found my new favorite class. This spell-less ranger from KQ plus the Guide archetype.

Yes. I got tired of hearing about all-caster parties, so I figured I'd rectify the situation. Our fighter and barbarian classes are equally bad-ass at higher levels.

angryscrub |
...MANY TRUE THINGS...
yes.
Lets see rangers get my two favorite skills perception and survival. I get a bow and can see far. Tracking is awesome and predicting the weather is nice. They also can get the archery feats which is a fun combat style.
this is indeed another way rangers are awesome. skills. good skills. and plenty of skill points to take nongood skills if you're into macrame or something. i've already covered why stealth and survival are uberawesome in the hands of rangers, but perception is right up there, and guess what? favored terrain bonus. oh, you're a favored enemy? more bonus.
all that, and rangers still have skill points to spare. why? because they're awesome of course.

We're getting ready to bring my wife's old ranger from 3.5 into our Pathfinder game. Rebooting him from third level.
Up around 9th through 12th (before we retired that campaign) he was delivering as much damage in a round with those two swords as the half-ogre barbarian was with his axe AND he was better in ranged combat AND he was stealthier.
We both loved that character. That's why he's comin' back.

There are some new goodies for the Spell-less Ranger coming out at some point, but I don't know when (that's up to the Kobold-In-Chief!)

It inspired me to create a 20 level progression for a half-orc natural weapon character.
With the Nailbiter weapon in that magazine, it allows him to get all the magical goodness that a sword-user would get without using a wondrous item.I ended up going Spell-less Ranger (Guide) 12, Rogue (Scout) 8 for the build because they synergize well and it looked awesome and made me want to play it. Sadly I do not currently have a group. :(
More Ranger Talents would be nice. I used the Animal Companion one to get the Guide Ranger an animal companion. That way he has a flanking buddy for his sneak attacks. Also took Trapfinding to get him the ability to do magical traps by 7th level.
I did find the Nature's Healing ability a little confusing though. I think it's supposed to work as any time you make a heal check on someone you heal some extra HPs. However, this means that in some cases you could use it on a character 2-4 times in a day and in other cases you could only use it once. In most cases you're going to get to "Treat Deadly Wounds" on a character and you can only do that once every 24hrs on a character. However, if a character was dropped below 0hp then the ranger can use first aid to heal him, then use treat deadly wounds to heal them, and if they had poison or disease then he could heal them again for those.

Just popping in to let everyone know the Expanded Spell-less Ranger is finally out :) It's the class from Kobold Quarterly, but newly expanded and updated with new Ranger Talents, new feats, new archetypes etc.
Nature's Healing has even been expanded and clarified :)
Check it out HERE if you'd like :)

you know what else is awesome? tracking. it's a better than a perception roll to detect invisible. instead of a opposed roll, it's a fixed dc.
oh look, there's tracks. oh look, they stop right there. stupid invisible guy, don't you know you're dealing with a ranger?
awesome sauce.
Until they play clever and fly. My ranger had a hard time dealing with some guy that turned invisible, and then flew. Also it was inside ~_~
That said, I sure do love my two-weapon flurry of swords.
There's also the spell-less ranger skirmisher. But I like my Lead Blades and instant enemy.
