I am adding a new twist as well...it will be in the SW book to fill space and will be product support for the Pathfinder book (probably, unless it fits). You all will be very happy with this addition I think.
I don't wanna spoil the surprise yet though:)
A significant amount of work is going into this--Pathfinder does not directly translate form 3.0/3.5, and neither does SW. We are being as careful as possible about rules and "feel" consistency.

Pre-orders will be taken as soon as this bad boy is in layout (figure May or so?). This will be done so that you can ensure that you get a first print (I expect a sell out, quite frankly). Bear in mind that 500 of these is going to cost me $15-20k in print costs, so I cannot print more until the first batch are sold. Without a pre-order, it could take a while to get one if they all sell out.

How much is this book going to be? Is it available to pre-order now?
I went to the products page on your website and did not see it at all...is there a link?
Umm...
Perhaps if thou hast readeth a tad more than just the first post, thou would hast not had to have asketh this question...
Just an obsevation ;-p

YES!
I am definitely picking this up!
Really glad to hear you'll be keeping the critters that have been converted to PFRPG already as well. Really, really hoping the (mostly) neutral forlarren makes it in, alignment intact, if only to have somethign to point at for precedence.
Also: Corpse orgy! Corpse orgy!

Oh my god...I have to get this! I was never able to find the original ToH books, but now a chance to get all of them? Yes!
And can you imagine hitting someone over the head with this book? It'd flatten their skull.
I wonder if it really will match Ptolus' size...
Lift with the legs, not with the back.

So will it be more or less expensive than Ptolus was? ;)

Awesome thing, this!
A big, bad book full of monsters that is itself a monster? Gimmegimmegimme!
I have some questions and observations:
Art and colour: I, too, prefer colour art, and really like the style Paizo uses, but on a book of this scale, I'd rather not double the already step price, even if it means recycled, black and white art. Even if a lot of the ToH art isn't really my style. Having the old pictures is no reason for me not to get this behemoth.
De luxe cover/binding: I'd be all for this, as long as it doesn't increase the price too much. I mean, if we're already talking about 100 dollars here, another 10 won't be too bad, but another 30 is a different matter.
Shipping: Do you have any ideas what it will cost me to have this monster shipped to Germany? What shipping options are there usually?
Announcement: I'm also all for some sort of newsletter, or any other way to tell us as soon as we can preorder.

KaeYoss |

I also have one question about the stats update process I wanted to post separately:
I understand that the basic role of critters won't change, but is the update really just a cross-reference with the "monster statistics by CR" table (i.e. make sure that monsters aren't shortchanged in the damage output department or have way too few HP), or will you add the occasional extra ability to special monsters to make them better in their role, the way Paizo did with many critters?
Examples:

Yes, but a lot of other factors contribute to price. Paper, binding, print run volume, etc. A small print run of black and white can be more expensive per unit than a large print run of a similarly sized color book. So we'll have to wait and see.
I suspect they will try to keep the price under $100 though.

The whole faux leather cover idea got me to thinking:
How awesome-albiet-impractical-and-unrealistic would it be to have it printed on bible paper?
You could have this thick tome open at all times on a pedestal next to your bookshelf, surrounded by candles, looking like a convincing in-game prop, reinforcing negative stereotypes from the 80's....

Honestly if they could add the beasties form Bestiary 1 and 2 just to round out ALL the main monsters I would be using, then HELL YEAH!
Or buy the PDF and go to local printer and get them to print ALL of your monster books onto onion skin and then hand bind the book into a custom leather binder... OH DROOL!
okay we have this massive tome open on a wooden pedestal with candles burning, a "human" skull, a golden chalice with "blood", and ceremonial dagger at hand...
add to that scene a sound track of gregorian chants with occasional Halloween screams and effects!
Wait! Why is everyone packing up their stuff to leave?

![]() |

Not too long ago we were all talking about how thick one of the recent Pathfinder hardcovers were to the point it could be used as a lethal weapon. Now this sucker is seriously going to allow for some shield bonuses in addition to incapacitating someone when swung across their head. XD
Definitely looking forward to teasers along the way.
This book will probably be bigger than Ptolus!

KaeYoss |

Still working on "extras" like faux leather etc. Shipping to Germany is $46 priority mail; guarantee that. That being said, it likely can co-jointly ship with like 5-10 other books in the same box for the same price.
Ouch. Since I just need one book, it would mean I'd eat the cost all by myself. Is priority the only option, or are there cheaper options? Though, when I think of it, Paizo shipments with big books in them are usually not very cheap, either.
I'd get it from amazon.de, but I'm not sure whether they'll get the book at all.
Plus, I want that free PDF, and if I get the book from somewhere else and then buy the PDF, I might end up paying the same.
I guess I'll just order it, then. It's not like books like this come along all the time, so I can afford this.
But just out of curiosity: If I managed to find more people interested in the book from around here, would it be possible to have all our books shipped in one shipment and still give everyone access to his own PDF?

The_Minstrel_Wyrm |

The more I think about this, the more I REALLY want to have this Tome! I'd do a pre-order, for sure, that way I know I'd get one.
[threadjack] As an aside, probably in the next month or so, I'm going to pre-order buy the Slumbering Tsar HC as well.[/threadjack]

Examples:
Chromatic dragons can now do interesting things with their breath weapons, like a blue dragon creating a storm cloud, or red dragons and their breath that turns stone to lava to frydrown their victims
Pit fiends can now shape lemures into higher devils
Pretty much just straight conversions. We're trying to keep tinkering to a minimum and not fix stuff unless its broken. Since the conversions are about 95% done now and just awaiting the final turnovers, we're not going to be able to do much to switch directions at this point. So in many, many of the monsters the changes other than the renaming of some skills (and re-allocating points), adding some feats, and adding CMB and CMD are going to be negligible.

Besides priority pick of a hotel room,
I'm thinking THIS is the reason to get a VIG for GenCon this year...
Well - the hotel room in the Indy Mariott Downtown already booked and reserved already *is* a pretty sweet perk :)
But I do agree on the overall sentiment.
If there are only 500 copies of this admittedly very thick and expensive book available on the Gencon Floor on Thursday, August 4, 2011, I don't think there will be one available for purchase on the same floor on Friday, August 5, 2011.
VIG carholders get in one hour early onto the Gencon floor on Thursday morning before general admittance. So VIG cardholders at Gencon will be sure to get their copy(ies) of this book. While I am certain many other attendees will as well, given the limited print run - I just don't see this book as collecting dust on any store shelf, ever, let alone making it out of Gencon Indy in unsold form.
If there's a second printing? Sure, maybe. But if there are only 500 for a first print run?
*Sold Out*

I'm wondering about just a few things:
Will the contents of the appendices be included? I know you mentioned the N’Gathau, so that's covered...what about the new rules for snakes (ToH Revised), planes of existence (ToH2 / ToH3), and the additional feats (ToH2 / ToH3)?
And when can we expect The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps: PFRPG/S&W versions? :D

![]() |

I'd like to petition for ToHC having Paizo stats for the monsters that already were in the APs/B1/B2.
If there will be two versions of each monsters, we might face a mighty confusion when a Paizo product will include a ToHR monster with one version of the stats and the ToHC will have another version. This might come up in PFS as well.
I'm not asking to exclude Shadow Demons, Gryphs, Sea Serpents etc - I merely ask to use Paizo stats for them in ToHC.
Pale/tsathogga/Greg - please, consider this.

I don't really see the issue here - Paizo products will use Paizo's published stats. The PFS-legal version will be the Paizo version.
Personally, if possible, I'd like to see a re-imagining of the monster, though I don't know that this is something they're shooting for.
