This is what I've always thought. It looked exactly like an Earth globe - continent shapes and all - when we saw it when the raven familiar looked through.

Eh? Here's the strip - what part of Earth do you think it looks like? The closest I can figure is Centeral America/Africa, but there's a huge bay where Brazil would be and the Iberian Penninsula is missing from what would be Europe.

It also appears to be in the midst of an ice age...

Well, good for Nale. Exorcising his childhood demons may even improve his general disposition (Yeah, not really, I think ^^). At the very least this dispels the notion that he is a dunce who can't get anything right. Good planning.
Huh, I guess Durkon may undergo some changes in the next strip. If we go by standard vampire rules, he should be free of thralldom immediately.

Even so Durkon may still seek revenge, Nale may not realize how much trouble he just put himeself in.
General Tarquin may react poorly as well.

Long-term planning never really was Nale's forte. :p But I think Durkon may have changed his mind about his priest buddy after getting forcibly vampirized. ^^

Probably, but Durkon can be amazingly loyal. So, Nale may still have screwed up badly. We shall see in the next strip.

Ah, I was behind. Thank you.

Heck, he doesn't even need loyalty to Malack to have reason to thump Nale. The guy just encouraged the clerics to sic fiends on his friends - who will, theoretically, actually be his friends again once his personality reasserts itself - and that's on top of ... well, everything he's already done throughout the entire comic.
The one speedbump I can imagine is Durkon not delaying his undead existential crisis moment until after knocking Nale around a bit.

True, but I imagine the conversation could go a little like this.
Nale: "A little thanks for freeing you from thralldom would be nice, dwarf! Now, you can either attack me and lose, as I do have numbers on my side, or help your friends, who are currently under attack and about to die. Your choice."
Durkon runs off to help the Order, giving Nale time to escape or enact the next part of his plan.
Or perhaps Durkon goes mad over the loss of his master and smacks Nale around.

Some of the possibilities:
Vampiric Durkon saves the party (maybe he orders his own fiend to fight the Malack's one). There is also possibility that, depending upon conditions of service Malack's friend is already freed and gone. Or free and not gone.
Vampiric Durkon beats Nale with the staff (who knows what other spells it holds?).
Vampiric Durkon getting a blue screen of death... Or just random outburst of maddened realization of what he is.
The drow being smart enough to dispel Durkon's protection spell...

Spoiler:But I think that Durkon will, er, unlive through the following events to fulfill the prophecy of {IIRC} dooming his homelands by returning there - posthumously.
Fixed it for you. :)

Regarding the blue spell effect at the beginning of the comic, I'm still not sure why my brain doesn't pick up on that dramatic cue that s#*^'s about to go down. In fact, I had the exact same reaction to the unexplained spell effect to this comic that I did to this comic. I went back and re-read the previous panels to make sure I didn't miss an explanation of the spell, shrugged and moved on, and completely missed the effect for the dramatic cue that it was, so I was plenty surprised.

Honestly kind of surprised. Kudos to Rich for making a turn in a story that seemed to be going a certain way for sure.
1) Didn't think Nale had those kind of smarts; but give Rich credit for explaining the why's and how's. Given that Nale's been obsessing since he was so young makes me wonder if there's more to what happened between him and Malack than just Nale spawn-killing for kicks or pettiness. It makes think that, for once, Nale may have a deeper reason for his mania - something that may have been caused by Malack and Tarquin.
2) Thought for sure the whole Nale/Malack/Durkon thing would go on longer. It certainly gave it a punch to the whole thing that I didn't expect. I suspect Durkon may be back with the Order sooner than expected, but obviously will be dealing with his new "condition" for a much larger time in the strip.

Vampire strength+ Durkon's strength score + 2 handed quarterstaff= Durkon playing tether-ball with Nale's head if he wants...
Doubly so, if he has righteous, er, Thor's might prepared as usual.
