Hail and well met!
Let the call go forth for 4-5 fledgling heroes who will bravely defend the city of Korvosa from all threats within and without! I am a longtime RPG gamer (player and DM), but new to the Pathfinder rules. I love what I've seen so far, and I'm eager to explore further by taking a shot at running a pbp on these boards.
I will be able to post at least once a day (usually in the evenings after work), so it would be best if players could do the same. I am looking for strong characterization, and active players who will share the responsibility of keeping the game moving forward. PCs will start at first level, using a 20 point stat buy. No evil alignments, please. The CotCT player's guide is an important resource to use in developing characters...it's available on this site as a free download.
If interested, please reply with a character concept, indicating the race and class you'd like to play, as well as a brief (paragraph or so in length) description of the character's appearance, personality, and motivation for hating Gaedren Lamm. I will reply on a first come, first served basis with an indicator of acceptance, rejection, or more info required to make a decision. First four (maybe five) characters to pass muster make it in. I will also consider party balance, so keep an eye on what other people are submitting too. Some material from the Advanced Players Guide should be okay, if you have it, but I'd like to stick mostly to core rules, since this is my first go round. Full character sheets are not needed yet, but if you want to make an alias and choose an avatar for your PC, that could be helpful.
If you have questions, please ask away! I hope to hear from some of the great players out there. Thanks!

Gave it a shot. Will make an alias if you think he's in the running.
Name: Vic Marduk
Race: Human
Class: Thief
History: Vic was born and raised in the slums of Korvosa, his mother a scullery servant in one of the South Shore’s posh estates. His father was a former longshoreman given over to drink and inveterate gambling, burning through what little money the family made. As a result Vic’s youth was a difficult one full of want and neglect. Early into his teens, he fell in with a group of local toughs, doing odd jobs for Gaedren Lamm. The work seemed easy enough, even exciting, and for the first time in his life he had coin in his pocket and could afford to dress in clothes that didn’t have visible holes. So despite his parents concern, Vic was happy with the arrangement, and it was only of late that he’d begun to question the fairness of the cuts and whether there was any real future in sticking with the old man long term. Such thinking led to where it usually does when Lamm is concerned -- with Vic lying bleeding and left for dead on a Korvosa dock after a botched job that looked for all the world like a setup.
Personality: Having spent so many years on the Korvosa streets and the fringes of its underworld, Vic has a somewhat skewed sense of morality. He has no qualms with lying, thieving, and cheating, provided a person is smart, fast, and clever enough to get away with it. After all, a sucker deserves to have his purse lightened, and if it’s not you taking advantage, then it’d just be someone else.
For all that, he still sees himself as a good person, smart, savvy, and loyal to his friends and benefactors. Others, particularly those not use to Korvosa’s seedier side, are apt to view him as rather cocky, overly cynical, and given to overestimating his actual abilities.
Motivation: Vic never liked Lamm much but respected the old man for introducing him to the trade. Whatever debt he owed him, however, died the night he was betrayed and left for dead and he now looks forward to the day he can repay that favor.
Appearance: Short, slight, with wavy dark hair, green eyes, and a face still boyish despite his wish to look hard and cunning.

I think I will try this one out. I've been keeping her in reserve.
Una Therlmagne, Human Fighter
History: Una cannot remember much of her childhood, but she does remember learning to pick up the simple artistry of the crossbow at a young age. She has spent much of her young adulthood serving as a lesser guard for the Bank of Abadar, although she has hired herself out as a mercenary fighter from time to time and has acted as a guard in other locales, including aboard the Maiden's Moan (or whatever ship is the main brothel of Eel's End). Although she has always tried to keep professional and independent, she has had to rely on others for protection at times. Una did have the good fortune of meeting a man in service of one of her employers, a fellow mercenary, and the two were intending to be married when he disappeared, only to be found dead a few days after. Una has reason to believe that Gaedren Lamm is behind it.
Personality: Silent and deadly, Una can be morose, dark, and frequently brooding. She rejects men coldly, refusing most acts of kindness and compassion.
Appearance: Beautiful but cold and haughty, Una has long black hair that she keeps tied behind her neck. She wears elegant (very professional-looking) black leather and attempts to present her good side first, always considering those she meets as potential clients and information sources.

Name: Pierre Bergadot
Race: Human
Class: Bard
Pierre Bergadot is a minor nobleman who spends much of his free time wandering the taverns and inns of South Shore, using his considerable charisma to charm himself into the beds of the city's noblewomen, married or not.
He had a happy childhood, and attended the best schools and took an interest in magic and history. Despite his devil-may-care attitude, he's an intelligent young man and able to debate with the best of them. Indeed, once he has had his fill of the city's women, he plans to settle down and enter the world of Korvosan politics.
However, his plans hit a roadbump when his sister was accused of prostitution. Despite having the cast-iron alibi of having spent the entire evening with her betrothed, mud sticks. She soon found herself suffering the indignity of having whispered rumours about her integrity passing around their social circles and this angered Pierre, although his own actions were used to falsely confirm that blood must be like blood.
Pierre tracked down the witness to his sister's supposed crime, and managed to force out of him that he'd been put up to it by a local crime lord, Gaedren Lamm. No doubt the cretin intended to try and blackmail the family, but instead all Lamm had done was make an enemy of Pierre. Before Pierre could get the fisherman he'd found to recant his story, he wound up dead, beaten to death and face down in the Jeggare. It was then that Pierre knew that he had to track down Lamm and get the evidence that would clear his sister forever.

Mizu Yasumi
Race: Human
Class: Monk, Zen Archer (APG package)
Yasumi is, perhaps, in over his head. He had been accompanying his instructor into foreign lands - learning the art of the bow and being taught how archery varies over by race and culture; ultimately this is intended to lead to a deep insight and understanding of the flight of the arrow. Unknown to Yasumi, he had reached a threshold of understanding; so much so that his instructor left him a note:
"Yasumi-san,
the rivers of learning flow ever onward, but all must eventually lead into the seas of understanding. Yasumi-san has reached the mouth of his river and must now cross the sea. I will be awaiting Yasumi-san's arrival on the distant shores.A word of caution, the sea you will be traveling is growing tumultuous dark clouds. This storm should not be avoided, weathering it will be an important step on the journey of enlightenment.
Ganbatene
Sensei"
An impressionable and overly naive young Yasumi was easily led to fall in with Gaedren Lamm's schemes - then left rattled and with a poor alibi when he was framed for the murder of a mercenary. Eventually acquitted he is now isolated from any he knew, and with few leads to go on he now seeks to regain his honor by confronting and bringing justice to Lamm.
Appearance and Personality
Yasumi is pleasantly handsome, with pronounced Tien traits. Remarkably clear skin, darkened slightly both by his blood and time spent outdoors. Very dark, but also very short, hair. Deeply brown eyes portray his face with a quiet contemplation.
He is remarkably open minded for one from Tian Xia; a credit to his time spent among different cultures and races - but nonetheless retains a reserved politeness typical to his own culture. He has a clear goal in mind, and his actions - like his archery - are swift and controlled to meet that goal.
(Side Note: I haven't searched through the available pictures yet; so it is possible that Yasumi's appearance and even gender may change based on the image I find best suited.)

Good ideas right out of the gate. Awesome!
Strangefate, stardust, Lorekeeper, you're all in.
That gives us:
Vic Marduk, Human Rogue
Uma Therlmagne, Human Fighter
Mizu Yasumi, Human Monk (Zen Archer)
TerraNova, I'll hold a tentative spot for you. If you could, at least try to throw together a race/class combo (caster would be nice). But I do understand having a super busy weekend. You're not at GenCon by chance?
Barrden Klymeth, I think you have a good concept there, but I'm worried about party balance, and so I hesitate to say yes to a bard. Any chance you might consider making Pierre, say, a sorcerer?

Hylog
Human - Male (Chelixian)
Wizard (Illusionist)[Dual class as cleric, headed for Mystic Theurge]
Hylog barely remembers his early life. Born to a former Priest of Aroden, and a wizard of the third order. His parents left Cheliax when he was three years old. His father was a broken man after the death of his deity, and though his mother did her best to hold the family together, taking care of five children, and a dottering husband stretched her beyond her capabilities.
She had a difficult time keeping tabs on her rebellious offspring, and that's what got Hylog in trouble. He began to hang out with the wrong people, and of course his little sister Melondri became his responsibility. One day about a year ago, Hylog left Melondri at a neighbors house when he was supposed to be watching her. Instead she sneaked out and followed him to his meeting with some of the ruffians he had began to hang around with.
That was the last time he saw her. His mother would barely speak with him now, and his even his confused father sensed something was not right. So Hylog began to search the city for his sister himself. Always a bright lad he now realized the repercussions of hanging out with the wrong crowd. Nothing good could come of this. It was then he began to sneak into his mothers spell book, and learn a bit of the magical arts. Though not strong physically, he could use magic to make him powerful. To give him the tools necessary to apprehend and get revenge on the man who was responsible for his sisters abduction.
Yes he knew who had her...He knew who was responsible...the name on the street...the name he must confront...Lamm!!!

scranford, I like your concept, and it appears that the party could use the magical ability. You're in. So, that gives us...
Vic Marduk, Human Rogue
Uma Therlmagne, Human Fighter
Mizu Yasumi, Human Monk (Zen Archer)
Hylog, Human Wizard (Illusionist)
That makes four, and that's what we need to get moving. We may wind up with five, but first dibs for that fifth spot will go to TerraNova (maybe with a divine caster of some stripe?). So, no more concepts for now please.
Looks like a good group! I'll get a discussion thread set up shortly and link to it here.

Here's the link to the discussion thread!
Strangefate, stardust, Lorekeeper, scranford: please head over there to keep things rolling.

I'm interested.
Name: Gyld
Race: Gnome
Class: Alchemist (AdvPG)
BOOM!!! Gyld loves things that mix together. He loves things that go boom. He loves little gadgets that work together. He loves.......that's a lovely butterfly!
Always moving from one project to the next without finishing the last, this little gnome finds himself in the loveliest places in all of the world. Recently he found himself in the lovely and oppressive city of Korvosa. Ahh what a lovely flower! But that's just been whats going on lately.
He's been on his own for some time. Gyld was attending the Acadamae until he was accused of murder. Turns out he was innocent. He really didn't care that it made him focus on one thing for so long. Ended up getting kicked out of school so he had to finish his own training. He knows who is responsible now so we'll see if this can keep his attention.
His family is long gone but he doesn't dwell on anything for too long........if I mix the blue one with the red one.........I've got to go. See you later!
Appearance: a smugged face little gnome that smells of various strong oders but seemingly unaware of them. He carries a backpack and belt with all manner of vials and powders. Gyld is always looking around and taking samples.

I would add to my app that if Rich Parents was a permitted trait, I'd spend 750gp of it on a Cure Light Wounds wand, which would both cover the fact the group has no divine spellcaster and also give the group a bit of crowd control and information gathering ability.
Unfortunately, I'm not really a big fan of Rich Parents. I think it is overpowered for a Trait.

I guess that I could change Pierre from a Bard to a Cleric of Calistria, if that's OK with you? In honesty, being a Calistrian Cleric might actually fit the character better than being a Bard.
Upon rereading Pierre's concept, I agree with you completely. Then again, he could indeed be a bard...or choose to multi-class between the two. And, having thought further, I realize that I have treated you a bit harshly, and for no reason. After all, you have a developed character idea on the table, while TerraNova does not. Therefore, I have decided to award the fifth player slot to you, Barrdyn. Please head over to the discussion thread (linked above) to get started on Pierre's sheet. I will accept him as either a bard or a cleric of Calistria, it's entirely up to you. Welcome to the game!
| Mauvais |
Hmm...Would be interesting to join it but I'll have to decline under the grounds that I'm running it myself so I already know a few of the secrets which I am afraid I might metagame. Good luck with the recruitment everyone.
Much appreciated, Aron, but it looks like we're full up anyway. Still, thanks for the interest!
Hmm, I may need to move forward with my plans to start a second game. Just have to decide which AP to run...LoF, KM, SS...too many awesome choices, argh!

I was thinking about a half-elven cleric of either Desna or maybe Calistira, a product of a certain noble's "preference". Born into privilege, had a run-in with Lamm and his alligator during one of her rebellious phases.
I understand the first-come first-serve, but if you need another player, or someone drops out, i would like to participate. :)
No, I am not at GenCon - though I would like to attend someday, the flight to the US is a bit prohibitive to me. I've had lots and lots of family visits and related works, it's birthday season.

If you plan on running Second Darkness some time - my gf would love to join in that one. Must be the whole drow thing... ;)
Lorekeeper - would she be interested in playing a healer in a pbp for a game in progress? (Still in part 1)
Also, I would be interested in playing in this game, if you have room for a ranger, and a DM takes the reins.

I'll pass the info along. What thread/link if you please?

Megan,
I will turn over the reigns to you for this if you would like to run this PbP. I had just asked everyone to wait till next week to give Mauvis a chance to post first.

Did you say you could use a DM?
I have the Curse of the Crimson Throne AP, and could run it for you if you like.

Ok, I officially turn over the reigns of this PbP to Megan. I would suggest that you post in the Discssion Thread since this was the original recruitment thread and folks might miss the *hand raise* here.

ps. Look for a new Kingmaker PbP in the next week or so by me.

You need to be quick... but if you'd like to come and join the fun!
What is your connection/quarrel with Lamm?
You have just heard that Lamm is currently using an old fishery down on the river as a base. You wandered by this evening, and came upon the astonishing scene of a couple of axe-wielding thugs bashing the door in and a fellow in robes crouching across the street watching proceedings.
If you'd like to play, tell me where I can see your character, then head over to the game thread and join in the mayhem!
BUT THAT'S IT: NO MORE PLAYERS OR MY HEAD WILL EXPLODE!
| Grimmeh |
The character in question is one Atherton Dram, a rogue who made a living as sort of a free-lance middle-man in Korvosa. He started to scale back on his criminal pursuits when he met a young woman with whom he fell in love. Angry that Dram had betrayed him by no longer taking work, Lamm had Atherton's lover killed and then approached Atherton, offering sympathy and convincing Atherton that one of Lamm's rivals had been responsible. Atherton killed the man who Lamm told him was responsible and has for the last several years felt something of a debt owed to Lamm, unaware that Lamm was actually the man who killed his lover.
That's basically the gist of it; the character is on my old account, so his profile should still be accessible.
