I really don't like the name "Inquisitor" for this class, the "Avenger" sounds much cooler and provocative than Inquisitor. Can we do a poll or something with this maybe?
Besides...inquisitor sounds much scarier than avenger IMO...spanish inquisition anybody? Those were some ruthless mofos

I like Inquisitor name myself. When someone mentions that name, you instantly have an idea what the class would be about, a ruthless warrior doling out his god's judgment/wrath. Avenger sounds a little flat. After hearing that I ask myself, "Avenging who or what?" It could be anything, and not just divine retribution the inquisitor instantly invokes.
my 2 coppers.

Also, the Holy Inquisition, from 40k, even space marines fear those guys...

I like "Inquisitor" for the name of this class. One of my long-term players has decided to try his hand at DMing finally, and another guy in the group has envisioned the Inquisitor as an ultra-paranoid, stick-up-his-*** who sees heretics and blasphemers at every turn. My Viking shield-maiden (i.e. Oracle of Battle) who speaks in tongues when she gets down to seeking a glorious death, is not only the exact opposite in temperament, but gets a good laugh out of how up-tight he is. They make a wonderful "odd couple".
I mean really, just as the thought of having a paladin in a party makes all the other characters uneasy (un-oh, gotta watch how we act), I see an inquisitor as the comical-in-his-seriousness version of that to the nth-degree. He's a character that could make a party full of paladins and do-gooder clerics sweat!
That's just something that's totally lost when I hear "Avenger". Are they a comic-book super hero? Was that the name of Birdman's pet eagle? What are they once they've avenged whatever they're avenging?
As for Vindicator... it makes me picture Vin Diesel as The Terminator. ;D

Inquisitor isn't as aggressive of a name either. To be inquisitive isn't a bad thing and doesn't mean an automatic smiting... to be vindictive or avenging implies a bit more violence.
Now that's not to say that the implications of the Inquisitor are always peaceful -- just that the name itself starts from a more neutral position.

I agree and my sanity thanks you.
I had a friend who thought about playing an Inquisitor and couldn't get it out of his head that Inquisitors aren't all evil. He went on and on about how all Inquisitors in history are terrible people that torture everyone ever at all times. Hyperbole aside, it's nice to hear someone say otherwise.

That's a very good book as well!
Indeed it is. I actually took a look in it again after some years as I startet to play my dwarfen Inquisitor. I know this particular race has an attitude to be stubborn, but I found it interessting to play him not in the typical "Spanish Inquisition burn every women with red hair" way.
But as I see the Inquisitor is -compared to the summoner- a less discussed class.

Avengers (when we're not talking TV shows, movies, or comic books who use it as a cool word to label their group with) are people who are trying to right some misdeed done against them or someone close to them. That is their goal in life. That is what drives them. They're not clerical in the slightest. They're fueled by pain, hate, and rage.
Inquisitors are the secret police of the church. They do underhanded things for a greater cause. They are devoted to some ideal of the church or some particular facet of their deity and are trying to punish those who go against it. They don't necessarily have any ties at all to their prey. They are just on a mission from their church or deity.
Avenger is a _horrible_ name for this class. It would be a better name for Cavalier (and it isn't all that hot there with oaths being removed) than it would be for Inquisitor.

Avenger's a bad name. It evokes Emma Peel.
"Inquisitor", however, invokes fear in the hearts of all heretics.
I fail to see how invoking Emma Peel either her classic 60's version or the modern movie version is bad? (focusing on Uma there and not the you know 'plot' of the movie)

Well pled. I undersign.

Not bad in the "awww keep that ugly hag away from me". Just bad in the "this is so not what this class is about" way.
Might as well invent a new type of angel: Charlie's ;-)
