Wait...we're not supposed to be running towards the bear? Uh oh.
Only if you like its hugs.
Who doesn't like hugs?

Porcupines and lemures.

Porcupines because it's such a pain to clean bloodstains off the quills and lemures because they just KNOW you're setting them up for something far, far worse when you are being nice to them.

I wish to apologise to Mr. M Morris for my comment in the other thread about the use of -our instead of -or in his post. It sounded a lot less snarky in my head than in text. Unfortunately, you can't edit posts after a certain amount of time, else I would have <redacted> the entire post.

Sorry mate!

I've got some ideas for my final pitch (if I advance, my round 2 creature will definitely play a central role) but to be honest, nothing on paper yet. I've got various old scenarios I could give a Golarion spin, but the fact is, I don't want to. Sure, they're new to everyone else... and after Superstar, if I go on to have a presence in this industry, I'm sure to use some of them. But so far, everything I've done in this contest has been new to me, not just new to the public; I want to keep that up! It's very refreshing, and I also think it's a good spirit to be in: this isn't RPG One-Hit Wonder. Five-year-old ideas, though impressive and well-polished, are a limited resource. I'd feel genuinely bad if I won with one of those, but then discovered that I could only come up with something equally impressive once every five years!

I don't think that's just good sportsmanship, though, I think it's probably a good idea in general. You may not think so at first, but I bet what you come up with now when inspiration strikes will be better than what you came up with way back then.

For my own part, though, I definitely need to start revving up well before the contest, because that's just how my brain works. My best ideas- and that's what I want to deliver here- take more than three days to develop. I also feel that that's an accurate representation of my profile as a designer; if I were theoretically assigned to come up with something awesome in three days, I would most certainly borrow elements from my home game and from the many half-finished projects in my RPG folder. Likewise, if I were expecting such assignments in the near future I absolutely would set aside a few hours a week for open-ended brainstorms, which is basically what I've been doing since RPGSS 2010 was announced.

Bill, I'm not Mike, but your post didn't seem snarky at all to me. I wanted to thank you and Andrew, Blake, and Patrice for your patience and good humour in all this.

And, in case anybody wants to see how belly-dancing, Star Trek, and Weird Al can go together, I present: a diversion.

Indeed, it appears you guy won't be progressing but at least you leave the contest knowing you were damned close. When you post your item make sure you drop a not here and I'll make a point of checking it out. I'm pretty happy with the things I've seen so far so yours should be good too.

And feel free to stick around... they keep the beer cold here and I think someone is sending cookies when they open up the voting.

Well I'd have to have noticed the snark to be affected, so no worries :p

In all honesty, I will feel bad if the <redacted> sucks and one of the alternates' critters is a better design. Self depriciating humour aside, look at Father Avon from last year. I sucked.

I've half jokingly said "Well we've proved Matt can design magic items, but sucks at everything else." I just hope that's not the case.

I have a meeting that starts as soon as the items are revealed, so I won't be able see everyone's monsters until later tonight. I took a gamble with my monster and hope it pays off (even though I think my <redacted> is one of Clark's 2 'Questionables', ack!).

Can't wait to see what all monsters you geniuses have come with, good luck everyone!

Good luck all!

Judges were not very excited about my creature but ultimately I feel relief that it's out of the bag.

Good luck guys.

Whats up Andrew,

Saw your in Springfield, Mo. Same here. My group plays tons of Pathfinder over here.

I've read some of your stuff and gotta say pretty impressed. Anyway, tried your myspace links to contact you and didn't really get anywhere.

Contact if you want

I can't speak for everyone, or everyone's taste.. However I think that is part of pitching to your audience. That is, enough of us thought that horror would get a favorable reaction.

Next year, horror will be gauche and sweetness will be the newest fad. Enter the Bubblegum Golem!

For just a touch of horror we have the variant BubbleYum Golem! After you think you have defeated it, it splits open and spider eggs spill out and they hatch into a swarm.

Spoiler:
If you google 'Bubble Yum Spider Eggs', you'll see all kinds of urban myths surrounding this.

I have to agree that catering to the audience made it feel like some element of horror would help. I mean, every adventure path seems to have some horror to it.

Best of luck everyone, and to those who, like me, got an unfavourable reaction from the judges: remember that its the voters who count!

Hey there Lynx. Trey runs the JJWM myspace profile and probably thinks you're crazy as he doesn't know of my gaming habits, whereas I need to actually check the Modern Epic profile more often, especially 'cause we got a show coming up this Friday at Lindberg's, whoo! That said, Paizo really needs a messaging system to go with our profiles =).

It'd definitely be cool to play some Pathfinder. I'll be really busy this week but after that I'll be sure to contact you by the weekend at the very least. What kind of games do you guys run (roleplaying/combat, homebrew/modules)?

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32 aka Sollir

I'm reduced to short sentences. Whoo, first night's over. What a crazy, crazy ride. I need to get to sleep. Good luck everyone!

The Exchange Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Hey guys,

I'm seeing some people really skirt the letter of the rules. Read rule #14... getting DQed for expanding on your creature would seriously suck. As much as I'd love to get into the big show I wouldn't want to get there due to a DQ.

I see some really nice creations here... more than a couple I would love to use.

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32 aka Hydro

Yea, that worries me too.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

Same here. I agree with Stephen when he writes: "It so hard not to clarify", but Dennis is right, there's more to lose by discussing things obliquely, or by coming close to the line.

Incidentally, nice work on your critters, guys. I've looked through all of them, and they're all solid concepts. I'm hoping to progress to the next round, but if I don't, it'll be because I got out-designed by some really professional entries.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8 , Star Voter Season 6

I don't know, is "Matt creates good magic items, but sucks at everything else" clarifying?

I'm writing up the How we got there today, as well as stats, just to post it. I've one surprise in the notes that makes me a happy camper. :-)

I've come to the conclusion that I need to check out of this section of the messageboards for a while. It's way too tempting to respond to messages. I've voted. I'll see y'all when the results are posted. Good luck!

Nearly made it. ;)

Just wanted to mention a huge THANK YOU to Ross Byers and the judges, 'cause they sent out the judges comments via email for the monster round to us alternates. Really appreciate that, guys! Perfect solution for the feeling of being stuck in limbo about our entries.

Now to go review the monsters a second time and do some voting..

Oh, excellent for them. Did you get their feedback for your item, as well?

Nope, but that's okay, I'll wait until Clark gets to it. I already can see the problems after readiing the reviews of all the other items.

It does seem to me that the theme evil and gross go hand in hand this year. I will be interested in seeing how the votes play out. Some very solid monster "themes". Best of luck to you all.

I know that we will probably never have the privilege of reading the alternates' items and monsters, but I just wanted to let everyone know in advance that I am never, ever going to stop grumbling about it.

Especially since Clark revealed that an alt. got one of his recommendations.

I just want to second the thanks to the judges for taking the time to review and send to us the feedback on our R2 entries. I think the best part of being an ALT this year is a chance to get the feedback and not have the stress of the vote. GOOD LUCK to all the top 32, I know how hard it is to put up your work and have the judges give it the once over and then the general public gets a turn. Keep up the good work.
