I think I missed the deadline by seconds. Would our submission have been accepted if we missed it, or would the timer have automatically locked out new submissions?
...my sympathies, but allow me to be the first to tell you that you really, REALLY should have seen this coming.
That being said, I hope your item gets accepted.

And it's time to open up the Voluntary reject bin. I can't wait to post my reject and see all the otehr cool items
So as not to distract from the top 32 when they're announced, we'd prefer you wait until after they go up on the 19th.
Besides—you won't actually know which of the official entries are rejected until then.

Ah. bummer. If I recall correctly last year is was opened early and a good way to pass the time till the 19th. and then we'll be discussing the top 32 and the rejects.

D'oh... sorry—I missed the word "Voluntary." Yeah, if you have items you crafted but *didn't* submit, go ahead and post 'em.

Yeah, congrats to those who took the leap and submitted. Nice job!
Best of luck to everyone!
I've read tons of submissions already and have many more still to go. I can say the average level of submission is up overall. That says the community as a whole is learning from the process and that is great.
The next week or so will be a long one with many a late night but it is well worth it. This is a great contest.
Just like in past years, I am sure there will be a bruised ego or hurt feeling along the way. It is inevitable. But this is always such a great community. I remember the first year, we were really hesitant to post comments on the rejected items because we didnt know how people would take the rejection. But we decided to do it and as you know the rest is history. This community has such a great reputation for being grown up and mature in the way they deal with criticism and discussion about the items. Most boards would never even think of having these types of discussions. The fact that we as a group can discuss failure and why it happened and the subjective element behind it sometimes and learn from those things is such a testament to the quality of these boards and the Paizo community. Being able to have real, constructive discussion about criticism without overreaction is such a positive thing.
So big props to all who entered and my undying respect to the community and the process we are about to go through together.
Remember, in the end we are not critiquing you as a person, we are just discussing your one specific item. Normally I say "even Tiger Woods can hit a bad shot off the tee" but under the circumstances I'm leaving the Tiger analogies alone :)
Great job!

Ah Tiger. Yes, might be good to avoid those references, but to take it another direction, sometimes a Tiger is just being a Tiger, as so eloquently stated by that Great Philosopher, Katt Williams.
Please note: So, very, Very, VERY NSFW.

Now that the submission cycle for Round 1 is completed ...
... is it time for the rampent specualtion about what Round 2 will be?
I strongly suspected last year that the judges scanned our rampant speculation and adapted the nastiest idea -- by which, of course, I mean the idea most likely to demand a high level of creativity and flexibility. Speculate all you want, Carl, bruhahhaha.

Okay. Here are my thoughts:
Create a villain. It is traditional, but it has been done.
Along with the wondrous item and adventure proposal, the villain round has been the only consistent part of the past two contests. I more or less expect to see it. (Although, unlike the wondrous item where we've seen the judges flat out state the reasons why it's a good qualifying round and that they're unlikely to change it year to year, there hasn't been any official word on villains returning. So... yeah.)
Create a non-villain NPC. Make a character that will be interresting for the characters to interract with in a non-combat manner.
I'd been wondering about this one as a possibility... the only strike against it is that 'create an NPC' takes away one of the great things about 'create a villain', which is the narrow focus. One of the most common criticisms on a lot villain submissions the last couple years was 'This is a really interesting NPC, but... not a villain.' Maybe a equally narrowed version of 'create an NPC', like... 'create a shopkeeper'. (Yeah, that's not that interesting, but I'm sure they'll be able to come up with something more creative than me.)
Create a location. Given that two of the guest judges are Cartographers.
Yeah, I see there being a stronger chance this year of having the mapping round that usually comes second to last popping up earlier.
Create a new creature. The New monsters section of the APs continues to be popular.
I could see this as a round two entry. Not the 'design three monsters' challenge from two years back- that would be a bit much to inflict as the opening round of the contest, both on the contestants and readers. But one would do just fine.
Other stuff that I could see popping up-
-design a city
-create a race (might be hard to fit into the limited word count you'd want from round two.)
One thing I do not expect to see as round two ever again? Design a country. I always thought it likely that having to go through 32 different thousand word entries was a choice the judges immediately regretted.

Uh oh... Now I am starting to sweat... Was this a confirmation email?
When you finished your submission, you should have been returned to the page with the RPG Superstar 2010 at the top, and the box where you clicked to enter should have now said something to the effect of thanks for entering, your entry is submitted. (I can't get the exact wording now, as the submit button is gone, since the deadline is past). As long as you didn't have it saying "Click here to submit" your submission should have gone through ;)

I do not recall... :S On the plus side, I have plenty of time to polish a strong concept for next year. It is all good. :)
Thanks to you and Neil for the reply!

Yep—that's what I was talking about.
