I'm entered, or at least I will be right after I post this. I actually only ever had one idea that came to me suddenly about a month ago and I haven't been able to think of *any* other items since then. This idea has gone through a bit of revision though and I think it's ready. I'm very worried that my name will kill the entry before it starts though, especially since with last year I don't have a good track record for naming.

Look at it this way - last year you got into the Top 32, not exactly an insignificant accomplishment. :)

I've been kicking my idea around for quite awhile now, and after a test run on making a few different items and learning how pricing math seems to work (the build process for intelligent weapons is a particularly painful one), I've ended up setting aside most of those rules entirely on my submission. I compared my item to other wondrous items with similar abilities but varying degrees of power, and I was pretty sure that I had overpriced mine. I may have ended up creating something a tad under-costed as a result of correcting that error, but I think it's balanced on the whole.
So, after an impromptu session with my gaming group where they fought fiendish treants, vampire gnomes, and a lich oracle with a bone to pick about their quest objectives, I succumbed to the mysterious power that is Mountain Dew Amp and stayed up well past my bedtime to refine my item submission. I'm still going to sleep on it overnight before I post the final rendition; the cost factor greatly concerns me, if for no other reason than that the item creation chapter gives us guidelines for pricing item effects, and then essentially says about wondrous items, "Meh - you figure it out." (Also, I think I'm gonna have nightmares about orders of operation in design math!)
And after all that's done, I still gotta buy a new suit for the NYE party tomorrow night. *sigh* Good luck, everyone. I for one can sure as heck use every little bit I can get.

I think its better to compare to an equal magic item.

I think its better to compare to an equal magic item.
Absolutely.
It's easy to not make a complete comparison, though.
Can it be used at-will? Can it be used as often as the PCs are likely to want to use it? Does it require a spellcaster to use it? Does it require a standard action to activate? Can it be activated before a fight? Can it be used more than once in the same fight? Affect more than one party member? Etc, etc. Factors like that are the main difference between, say, a wand of true strike and a +20 sword.

Of course, the wonderful (being both sarcastic and not, here) thing about the RPG Superstar contest is that, frequently, there are no similar items. I had that problem for a couple of my potential submissions. I ended up erring on the side of caution for my actual entry, figuring that it's better for the judges to say "this is too expensive, it should be cheaper" than for them to say "holy carp, this item is broken at that price!".

I totally ended up in that boat. My item has many abilities, none of them are anything close to abilities in any book I've ever seen. I'm expecting half the judges to say it should be 5 times more and the other half to say it should be 5 times less. But just in general I think pricing the item, assuming you put any effort into comparing it to other items, will be just fine. You aren't (I doubt) going to docked too bad for having a few thousand gold too high or two low.

I'm just about to submit my entry. I'm kinda new to these boards and have only recently got the Pathfinder rules and was planning on using the rules to continue running campaigns in Forgotten Realms but after looking at some stuff on Golarion I'm hooked! Good work Paizo.
Anyway, I digress. Hello everyone, good luck!

Submitted! I love the RPG superstar concept even if I dont get the votes. Gives me a chance to flex the creative muscles and get some good ideas from other creative people for the home game.
Thanks ahead of judgement time for the opportunity to amuse and entertain the masses!
Yep this is also why i entered last year (getting some encouraging feedback from the judges and community eg good but not quite) and again this year. As a non-practicing GM it helps keep the juices going ya know.

While folks are waiting, there's still an artifact design contest over at Wizards, plus the good old Expert DM and Hero Artisan contests on the Wizards forums. Less prestigious than RPG Superstar, but good for keeping the juices flowing while we're waiting.
Of course, the smart move is to be working on that adventure proposal...
PS: Good luck to all entrants, and those still pounding away at their anvils!

I just sent in my item. Whether it's Superstar or not, I think it's a pretty darn neat little item. I'm looking forward to comentary and growth regardless. I know last year's contest helped with this year's entry.

I threw in too. I've also seen a number of people who I've either read their work they generously post freely here on the boards, through Open Design, or reading their previously published stuff post here that they've entered, and I'm really excited for what's to come. I think this is going to be a really fantastic season for RPG Superstar.

Since you welcomed me so warmly to the boards and wished me luck with my submission, I feel it only right and honorable to wish you luck as well. Good luck, Adam!
And I'll raise you a Happy New Calendar! I mean... Year! I can't wait to see who makes the top 32 and I wish the judges much patience and sanity as they weed through the entries.
For those in the Pacific Northwest like me...

Oh Edgar, I always love support from the spirit realm. You guys always help out so much.

Well, here goes... This'd be the first time that my personal rules wonking has gone beyond a "PEACH Please" post on the WotC boards or here, and it's my first actual Wondrous Item attempt. I'd cross my fingers, but I always find that that jinxes it...
Good luck to everyone (but best of luck to me ;) )

This is not my first shot at an RPG contest, but I must say I definitely hope it goest better than before. In comparison to all the others I appreciate that this is specifically designed to find "new talent" and give those that might not otherwise have the opportunity a shot. I truly respect that. I just wish I'd known about this contest a few years ago and could've gotten in on it before. Ah well, c'est la vie. That's what the future is for.
Good luck to everyone - I look forward to being continually inspired creatively by the contributions of all.

Congrats to everyone who has submitted so far! And if you are on the fence, use these final hours to polish it up and get it in! We want more!
Please, take more of my free time! Make me read more submissions deep into the wee hours of the night! I love it! Seriously, I do. Its a sickness. Punish me!
I want more good submissions to read (and I think as it is I have maybe 200 that I still haven't read yet).

There's a dedicated judge for ya - sitting by his computer on New Years Eve, cigar between his teeth and a glass of champagne by the keyboard going "reject", "reject", "reject", "auto-reject", "super-cool item - keep", "spell-in-a-can - reject".
Way to go Clark - but don't forget to quit before midnight and enjoy the fireworks.

I was not going to enter, but an ex-player of mine had me help on the editorial side of his idea. He insisted that I enter as well so he could return the favor, so I did.
Best of luck, everybody!

Welcome to the boards, and best of luck to you and your friend.

I only recently decided that I could enter after all, so left things rather late but I just submitted my item. I don't know how I'll feel about it in the morning (since it's 3:30am here now!) but I'm reasonably happy with the item as it stands. The other contests happened before I discovered Paizo, so it's pretty exciting just to be involved. :)
Good luck to everyone, I'm looking forward to seeing what the top 32 came up with in a few weeks!
