How is Paizo doing?

I just saw the latest news on ENWorld re: more WOTC layoffs .... to do that at this time of year is just so horrible.

But it makes me wonder: How is Paizo doing these days? I'm not asking for numbers because that is too rude, but is Paizo doing okay in the current economy?

I'm just asking because I love you all so much and would hate to find out things are not going well.

Please let us know.

They're hiring, and that's probably a good sign.

I believe they are doing well. One of the things Lisa Stevens has said repeatedly is she doesn't want Paizo to grow and expand to the point where she doesn't know the names of all the people working there. With that cautious growth, you don't have to worry as much about a contraction in the business where you are forced to layoff employees.

At the risk of comparing apples to oranges, I work for a subsidiary of a publicly owned company, and we have holiday layoffs every year, regardless of actual company performance. It seems to be the nature of the beast with publicly owned companies, like Hasbro.

But as Andrew said, Paizo is hiring, so there doesn't seem to be much to worry about. :)

According to some (sketchy and likely based on stores only) reports, Paizo has a market share comparable with White Wolf.

We are doing the best we have ever done. Period. We are hiring people, throwing a Christmas party this year, and having the best sales we have ever had. Trust me, there is a lot less stress at Paizo this year than ever before. And that is with the worst recession in my lifetime. I couldn't even imagine how well we would be doing if this was a boom economy. But I am very thankful that we are doing as well as we are. It makes the holiday season much more bright and shiny. :)

You are talking about that ENWorld report on their front page? Sketchy is stretching it. That report was one store's impression of how the industry separates out. I know of stores which would have Paizo selling MORE than WotC. And others where we might not even make the pie chart. You have to take all of that with a huge grain of salt. I have been told by a number of distributors that Paizo is in the top 3 in RPG sales. That is good enough for me!

And Lisa -THIS is why you guys are so successful and command the devout following you do. A loyal fan and customer posts an inquiry, and the CEO personally writes back with a thoughtful, honest answer -and with a little bit of love. On a Saturday, even! =-)

They do that most years. WotC staff must expect it, and arguably its better that all their staff go into the Christmas period knowing whether or not they have a job in the new year, rather than worrying about it.

Obviously, it sucks for those who don't.

On a brighter note, I am glad that Paizo is doing well. Back when I got my "Paizo Adventure Path Charter Subscriber" tag I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into. I have certainly been delighted with the results.

I concur. I'm delighted with the results of amethal's subscription.

My own subscriptions have been wonderful, as well, in case anyone was curious.

Agreed. For a small company Paizo seems to be heavily populated by class acts. From Sean to James and a bunch of others, it seems Paizo staff actually care, and do their best to have contact with their customers. I have nothing but pleasure dealing with the company. I'm thrilled they're doing well because they deserve it.

Hear hear! Paizo is doing brilliant work, and in my 20+ years of D&D I've *never* been this excited about the game! :)

(And not just about PF RPG... I love Golarion, and all Paizo stuff is just top notch in quality!)

Undead are not invited this time... Lisa is probably still miffed about the 'zombie-in-the-cake' stunt you pulled last year!

Now, charming Chelaxian dwarven gentlemen with auburn beards... we're another matter altogether! Especially as I have conj...er, CONNECTIONS to some devil...ishly handsome and beautiful individuals! ;)

(SKR, you'll get your own private sessions with three Erinyes... but no whips or chains this time!)

Lisa,

Thanks for the response. You guys are clearly a bright spot in an otherwise horrible economy. I think it is important to share the good news with your fans. Glad to hear that you folks are taking the time to be able to celebrate the achievements over the year.

Best wishes for an even better 2010!

Cheers!

Congrats! I'm glad to be your customer, you guys are awesome!

Great to hear paizo is doing very well. Keep the good work going.

If paizo is one of the top 3 RPG companies sales-wise, I´d guess No. 1 is WotC (by a wide margin), and No. 2 is White Wolf.

Ok, we really need something to distinguish Erik from the other one-eyed bean monsters.

How about an animated avatar with an eye that looks back and forth and blinks?

Other than possible copyright issue, why can't some of us have unique avatars for precisely the reason mentioned above? I don't know about others, but sometimes I identify people easier by them. *shrug*
