I posted this in the other thread but it deserves its own.
I gotta say, I'm a little peeved that I can't get the PFRPG pdf until the 13th (though it's on my assets list). If the PDF wasn't ready or something that'd be one thing, but this seems to be an artificial holdback just for gencon and marketing.
Maybe your servers will go kablooie if you put it up now, but how about putting it up for like the charter guys or something, we've been supporting you guys a good long while now, would be a nice perk.

I answered you in the other thread:
The Core Rulebook PDF actually isn't ready. We're working hard to make this the best PDF Paizo has ever produced. Not only will it be fully bookmarked, but it will also be internally hyperlinked, and we've had four people working on that project since it went to the printer. (The initial pass has been completed, and it's being checked now.) We're also hoping to incorporate some errata into the PDF; that's also being compiled now.

I was under the impression that having the PDF availible on the 13th was exactly and intentionaly for Gencon and Marketing.
Although I would be all about any type of perk for Charter guys. Generally I'm in favor of anything that would benefit me in anyway :)
I am very glad to hear about the extra work going into the PDF, the bookmarks, etc. will be great.

We talked about it, and there were pros and cons of waiting until Gen Con. Two reasons to wait are the ability to do event-based marketing and the fact that we know we'll have a legally purchasable solution before a pirated version is available. My personal favorite reason *not* to wait is that it would divide the load on the servers into two periods instead of one.
But in the end, "not ready yet" pretty much trumps the discussion.

Now I'm excited! I love pdf's and can hardly wait to see this one. I fully intend to get it as soon as it's available to download. Of course my love is also enhanced by the fact that I will be waiting oh I don't know how long for my hardcopy to show up via local gaming store order.

I have no problem what-so-ever waiting until the announced release date. And obviously not ready yet trumps everything else, but honestly it makes perfect sense to wait until Gencon. I know people tend to forget that Paizo is a business. Undermining the marketing that has been done until now is never a good idea in the long run.
I, too, am frothing at the mouth for this PDF, especially with a recent new job. I won't get my hands on my hard copy for three months when I get home from training.
My only consolation is that PDF. Even then, I will have precious little time to check it out.

Werecorpse |

Just so ya know, even if the delay was purely for marketing I have no problem with waiting until the 13th.
You said it would be available on the 13th, I ordered it knowing it will be available on the 13th, it will be available on the 13th. All good.
(besides where I live it will be the 14th by the time you release it, international date line and all--- that is fine too)

I suspect that at midnight Eastern time the Paizo site will be flooded. And every hour after will get worse. Then at midnight Pacific it will become available, Vic will be sitting at his desk, chewing his nails to the flesh, waiting to see if the server crashes into pulp as BILLIONS of hits are registered in the span of 5 seconds... all from one person hitting Refresh like a rabbit in heat! lol
Vic, you SOOO deserve a beer and a vacation when this is over.

Errata? What kind of errata?
Hopefully nothing like WotC's 4th edition we obviously didn't play test this game errata...

He is hoping that they release it +10 GMT mid night... Less likely hood of the server crashing... and I can get it early for a change. :)

I dont think that is possible, since we have direct evidence of massive playtesting but a few clicks away.
That said, it can always be better. No rules set is perfect. There is always room for better wording, improved clarity etc.
Though honestly i would prefer if errata that are obviously not in the print edition are not in the pdfs. That can easily lead to confusion if one player reads the pdf and one reads the book, not realizing its errata that provides the difference. I know in my gaming group, some of us will be getting the print, but others prefer the pdf's only. I like to have the book in hand, but i have a friend who just stores pdfs on his netbook and brings that. I imagine a headache or two if there are differences between the sources members of the group are looking at. Now if the errata is included with the pdf as an appendix or some such thing, great, but actual changes to the text would be problematic.

Too much effort, unless you mean an encrypted zip file, which are laughably easy to crack. If you want something that can't be circumvented easily, you'll need to set up something else, probably require others to download some software to decrypt.

I was thinking that easy to crack isn't that big a deal for something that will be available in 7 days anyway.
After all, "easy" only applies to a small fraction of the people who will be downloading. Do you really think a handful of people will crack the file and start distributing it to all the other subscribers prior to the 13th?
I think the less than seven day duration concern you expressed is trivial compared to the server slam to come.

All it takes is one guy to start blabbering. Log on to a number of RPG related sites and start posting all the juicy bits.
That, or distribute it via all those little venues you can use to distribute illegal stuff.

I believe Lisa said elsewhere that they would try to correct a few typographical errors, if there was time. I wouldn't expect anything else to be likely.

Cool. Can it also do my taxes? If you want to go crazy, do some layer stuff. I have no idea what use that would be. I shouldn't read Robots have no Tails, it affects the way I speak. That, and I get the urge to get drunk and invent something.
Anyway, the über-PDF of darkness is great news indeed.
If the PDF slaves are done with that, make sure to let them create a PDF character sheet you can fill out on the computer, maybe with some calculation stuff (like BAB, saves, attack, AC).

To be fair no matter what day the PDF comes out the server is going to get slammed.

And I still say that a handful of days of that is less an issue than the server slam would be. And that is *if* your concern even happens.
A small chance of a minor issue doesn't hold a candle to off-setting the certainty of server slam.
That, or distribute it via all those little venues you can use to distribute illegal stuff.
Which will be not one drop less an issue on the 13th. This option is completely unrelated to piracy.

10 AM Pacific Time is the release. I will be at Gen Con, running a register. Gary and Ross will be back in Bellevue in the server room with the fire extinguishers.

Hey, I liked your idea. I can't speak for Gary, but the biggest problem I have with it is the "not done yet" issue.

~laughter~ Poor Gary and Ross! Shall we send them some Beer and Pizza?
Edit - I will be waiting until Sunday or Monday to download my PDF. Besides, I have way too much to read anyway.

Since I'll have to be at work during the week, I'll probably not get a good chance to try downloading until late night west coast, if not waiting until Friday or Saturday depending on how tired I am (working outdoors in SoCal summer weather with kids -- the definition of a tiring day at work!).
Here's hoping the massive box arrives on the 13th, 'cause then I'll prolly hold off downloading until I've gotten my first chance at diving headfirst into the book itself :)

Astonishing!! It will be well worth the wait.

I'm a sad lil' wolf... Because of tackling tuition, I'm pretty strapped for monies and I won't be able to purchase the PFRPG on the 13th. Or terribly soon.
But, dammit, I'll buy the (nicely priced) PDF as soon as possible and get the print version at a later point as funds allow (I still need to buy a TI-84 Plus)...
EDIT: With the entire print run selling out, it looks like I'll have enough time to save up for a print copy. :D
Congratulations, guys and gals!!! You easily deserve it. :)

I'd contribute to that - they'll probably earn it. Depending on which beer you sent them it could come in useful when the fire extinguishers run out and the servers start to glow.

Indeed.
I said it in the other thread, but it's worth repeating.
"Pathfinder Core PDF; this one goes to eleven".
