I know last year, I stopped by to pick up the Beta softcover first thing, and they sold out ~fast~.
I preordered through Amazon, which said they weren't shipping until Aug. 24, since I can't go to GenCon this year. My friends are mostly expecting to pick up the book at GenCon, and they'll be stopping by first thing to pick up their books before they're gone.
I asked my FLGS, which didn't have anything Pathfinder in stock (the core rules haven't been released yet), but said there's been a lot of interest. I'll probably order the Bestiary or something through them...

they said they will have copies at GenCon and sell them Thrs morning. I expect them to go quickly. They also mentioned they would meet and talk about if they wanted to stagger sales so they had copies for each day. I know at best I will go on Friday. If not then we will go on our original day of Saturday. I am scared if we go Saturday that all copies will be gone. We had one guy from my gaming group manage to corral a copy from a local gaming store (pre order). So, if we fail in our mission at GenCon I know our group will have at least one copy.

From our Press Release,
"We thought we had printed enough to last us at least until the end of this year, but skyrocketing demand from our customers and distributors has us reprinting already," Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo said. "We have a healthy amount heading to Gen Con, but we think even those will go fast, so don't delay in picking up your copy!"
Emphasis added.
We will have copies at GenCon, but we've already exceeded expectations with preorders, so we have no way to predict how long those copies will last.

I threw together a simple page showing the top 10 roleplaying game sellers on amazon. The data is live so if you check back occasionally you should see different results. The page is at
So that first number (which was 109 a few minutes ago and now is 117) that's the number of books they sold? They've only sold 117 books on Amazon....? That's much lower than I anticipated.
But I may just be looking at it wrong.

No, the first number is the book's "Rank" on the chart, lower being better.

Because people keep buying other books, but when the difference in ranking is between one in the hundreds versus ones in the thousands, those changes seem pretty negligible. Thanks for putting that together, Jyrest.
no problemo :)
All I care about is that the book is far better in sales than apparently the other books flagged as "roleplaying game" books.
Pardon me whilst I pimp the site a moment too... don't forget that behind all that shiny amazon-list goodness is a pretty spiffy pf beta srd site too which will be updated as fast as possible to final rules once I get them into my grubby mits.

Does the email actually say that they sold out or just that they have very high demand and that they are printing up more books? There's a big difference there. They might've thought that what they printed up would last through the year and maybe it won't but that doesn't mean that it won't last through the next couple of months or so.
If they are sold out, does that mean everywhere (Amazon, Borders etc) or just from Piazo themselves as they have to ship so many copies to said companies?
Sorry, I don't trust marketing or advertisements any more than I trust the government. That's nothing against Piazo as every company like this needs good marketing hype to create awareness and drive up demand. I personally am always skeptical about these kinds of things and usually just don't believe it by default. I always feel that there's some catch or astrisks or something.
I could very well be wrong though. I just hope that they don't pull a Wii or a Kindle.
EDIT: Just read the press release but it didn't quite answer my question, at least, not that I saw.

We're bringing a lot of copies. A LOT. And we expect to sell them all.
As for being sold out, WE'RE sold out--now it's up to the distributors ( and their retailers) who bought from us to sell out. We're reprinting because we have no more copies to sell into distribution.
Wow, kudos for the honesty! I really do appreciate that. I hope that I didn't come off as being too rude. I just didn't want people to think that they weren't going to be able to get a copy until November or December. A friend of mine saw the "sold out" announcement and thought just that.

I was wondering the same thing too! I put in a pre-order at Amazon after the announcement that the book was sold out. I was desperately hoping Amazon had one to sell me! I was sitting here complaining at my own procrastination and shaking my fist at the sky.

Just how big was the first print run?
How many copies got printed?
It's private, internal business information. They won't say. Ever.
Probable guesswork suggests somewhere in the order of 30k-50k, but we'll never know for certain.

Why? So what if I know that 100 thousand copies got printed and sold, Or, only 143 copies got printed and sold?
I'm [we're] all still here...
4.0 probably sold more copies but that just means there are a lot of sheep in the world, or there wasn't an alternative at the time. I think Paizo should break the mold and state the exact number, it wont change anything!
You told us how many Beta downloads there had been!

Well heck, I bought a copy of the 4th Ed PHB, but there's no way I'm going to bother playing that game (well I might try it at a con, but not in my home game). I imagine a large number of old D&D hands picked up copies out of curiosity. It is D&D (in name at least) after all.
