7. Although many speculate on her original name, what sailors now call the Spirit Wrack is a ghost ship in every sense of the word. And the ancient artifact from a lost age that made her such living nightmare over a century ago still works its foul curse, for any who die under her masts become part of her ghostly crew.

14. A drunken captain and his crew of wrench-wielding deckhands manage to keep the steamer Sabine moving cargo upriver to the muddy marshes.
15. Stout deckhands dangle from the deck chipping ice from the path of the Rime Nymph using long broad-blade spears. Blistering winds fill frost-covered sails as the crew plows on.
16. Small but trustworthy, Petona was carved by a local fisherman in a rite of passage and named after his betrothed.

22. Perdition's Fist - An infamous Chelaxian warship either found escorting ships of vital importance to Chelish interests or prowling after the Gray Ships of Andoran. Manned by Hellknights trained in naval combat and captained by an ordained priest of Asmodeus, this ship is rumored to be responsible for the death of at least one foolhardy copper dragon, whose skull now decorates the ship's infernal figurehead. There is a slave holding pen within, specifically and ironically intended for any officers taken from Gray Ships.
23. Besmara's Bastard - Enemy to many, friend to few, and trusted by none, this (allegedly) ancient and restored galleon is in far better condition than it looks, but is every bit as rough and tumble within as it appears without. Manned entirely by a fanatic Besmaran cult, its captain and high priestess, a fearsome one-armed, one-eyed woman who has managed to survive the pirate's life well into her 40's, claims to be one of the goddess of strife's daughters. There is no solid proof of this dangerous boast, but it has been rumored that Besmara's Bastard has often been seen accompanied by sea serpents...

The ship has 100 adamantine oars each side, attached to an elemental powered-steam engine. The ship holds a single massive cannon, which has a 360 degree range of fire, with a range of 1 mile. The ship is the seat of power for the Dwarven pirate king. The King's Hammer is home to 250 bloodthirsty Dwarven pirates.

The Unhallowed Messenger
This small clipper is home to several undead, including an aquatic vampire for a captain, as well as a true necromancer who helps to keep th mindless undead and other thralls in line. The ship boasts at least 50 skeletons, and is pulled by eight zombie orcas who are chained directly through what bones and cartilage are left, although a Gentle Repose spell is cast on each member of the "pulling" team once per week. The ship is incredibly fast.
Dawn's Caress
This warship was built by priests of the sun god in response to the Unhallowed messenger. The ship is manned by no fewer than 10 priests, as well as a crew of undead hunting and capable paladins, rogues, and three different rangers. The rest of the crew is pretty standard, being capable sailors, all with at least 5 years of sea experience. The ship is used both hunting aquatic undead and rooting out undead infestations in coastal cities, but also transports diplomats on a very well protected ship.
I suppose I went a little overboard, but I've thought about a naval campaign every once in a while. I'd be happy running it in any world where it would be applicable, with well known trade routes.

A pair of ships from my last Freeport game (some allies, some foes);
The Blood Maiden
Captained by a ruthless half-orc Barbarian who calls herself 'Tarikka the Blood-Maiden' and crewed by those she has cowed into believing her to be a living god, the Blood Maiden is a refitted caravel. None of those who survive to become crew lack the ability to enter a blood-rage, with the exception of her officers, a cold and secretive Kuthonite Monk whom no one on the crew has ever seen eat or sleep, an insane Cleric of Lamashtu with an unwholesome obsession with sharks (and feeding people to them, preferring spiked sharkhide armor and gauntlets to larger weapons, all studded with alchemically-strengthened shark's teeth instead of normal metal spikes) and 'the Captain's Man,' an enslaved Sorcerer, kept alive only so long as he pleases his deluded mistress.
The Mist Dancer
Captained by a bone-white elf who is called 'Captain Hennisey' by his all-elven crew in the presence of humans, this small merchant ship carries less cargo than most, but is also faster than most, and specializes in light, precious cargo that must arrive swiftly. The ship's elven name is Tulathiel, and the Captain's name is Alamandrien, but neither are used in the presence of non-elves, as the elves speak only Common in their presence. All of the elves are bone-white in color, fair-haired and go barefoot on deck, wearing ornate jewelry of coral, shells, fish bones and brightly-colored feathers from tropical birds, as well as loose light clothing that whips across their lean bodies in the wind. They sing while working, but the melodies are wordless, and 'Captain Hennisey' is a skilled Bard, and his first mate is some sort of weather-witch, combining the arts of the Druid and the Sorcerer, and having a talkative and surprisingly intelligent tropical parrot as familiar. The slender ship has outriggers that are on adjustable spars as thick around as a bull's neck, that can be unlocked and raised when the ship is pulling abreast of a dock. The 'ship's boy' is a silent unarmed combatant who has the unusual ability to run on the top of water, but only for a single round before he falls in.
