Today's Bestiary Preview (July 6th)

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Well, unlike the last Bestiary preview, the powers that be have actually disguised the names of the monsters this time around. So, what are we dealing with here?
My guess:
Kyton (Chain Devil), Pit Fiend, Balor and Oni/Ogre Mage.

Pretty much what I thought as well(Although it could also be a horned devil not a pit fiend)

I think your guesses are pretty much head on.

I'd like to assume that the preview is showcasing the physical difference between a pit fiend and a balor, but that looks more like what I would guess to be a horned devil ...

Spot on for the other calls though.

Dark Archive

I have to agree on the guesses also.

True, it could very well be a Horned Devil (Cornugon) instead of a Pit Fiend!

So I guess, PreviewMonster4 may be Bearded Devil(he has sawtoothed blade and beard).

We know what a bearded devil looks like from a previous blog.

My money is on

-Kyton- -Horned Devil (Cornugon)- -Balor- -Oni-

I adore the Balor, it looks really uniquely demonic, as opposed to just a large standardised demon, it hasa real bestial, brutal appearance, and its uniqueness indicates that the Pit Fiend will be quite different looking.

Liberty's Edge

I'm also betting it's a horned devil instead of a pit fiend, because that balor illustration is all kinds of cooler and I don't think the devils would settle for that.

Only Bearded Devils don't wield flaming whips and swords like lightning bolts (which IMO, the preview's does). Nor do they have wings (unless Paizo's changing that, though I don't really see why they would).

Kytons just got a whole hell of a lot more interesting...

Little bit leggy and too buff in the upper arms for my tastes... but yeah, there are worse reasons to end up with a scar or twleve.

I'd let her wrap those chains around me any day of the week... even Sunday!

I admit to curiosity: hat caused the holes in the barbed devil's wings, and what caused the nick in the Balor's blade?

"Hell" of a lot, eh?

Anyway, you're a naughty, naughty man.

A man after me own heart, in other words. ;-) (Or is it perv after me own... let's keep it at heart)

Kyton, Horned Devil, Balor, and my best guess was Tiefling until I heard Oni... there's nothing in the picture to give any scale unfortunately. I certainly wouldn't be disappointed with that as an Ogre Mage, but it doesn't quite click for me.

And are Oni considered to be "from the Great Beyond"?

Really? I though the the Ogre Mage was the most obvious one.

Much better to give than receive when it comes to the chains.

Could Samurai boy be one of the critters from the ToH? I don't have them in front of me, or maybe the Oni is an ogre with a template?

Oni are a class of evil spirits in Oriental Adventures. The Ogre Mage is listed in the Bonus Bestiary as "Oni, Ogre Mage".

Rather then discuss the names, can I just say, that if this is representative of the art within the book, it will be 300 pages of simply killer artwork. Those are some fantastic pieces.

More!

We definetly need the Kae no Oni.

Dunno about the rest of you, but to me, the Balor actually LOOKS like a Balor. Not just some guy with a whip and fiery sword.

HE SHALL NOT PASS!!!!

It probably is the Oni, although I am a little disappointed he's wearing armor rather then tiger skins and carrying a sword rather then a kanabo.

Don't worry. There are probably more types of oni to come.

Look at the thing. He shall pass if he wants to. Nothing will stop that thing. That's not a weakling Balrog who is going to be whipped by some low-level mage who still thinks casting light is a big thing.

Or the sword and armour aren't adnate and every ony can use different gear.

I don't think they will do more oni until they revisit Oriental Adventures.

I still think a KaeYoss no Oni would be a good idea. If you don't give in to my demand now, I shall summon an Oni, name him, and let him do really bad things.

Ever hed a netherdemon piddle in your soup?

As it works out... I believe the artist we got to do our Balor, Ben Wootten, is the same guy who designed the look for the Balrog in Peter Jackson's movie. :-)

Wow they are giving out the ‘Contributor’ tag to just about any gifted/hardworking artistic genius today.

Shame, there goes the neighborhood.

Hey Ben, awesome work.

Weren't some of your pieces featured a few years back in the LoTR's exhibit?

Whoa! Mairkurion your up really early.

Late! Been dungeon-crawling for four days with my buddies from OKC. Good times.

Kick ass! I liked the Balrog fine...but this guy makes that one look like a REAL wimp. Which is as it should be.

Hi Ben. Really awesome Balor. Now that's a demon you can get afraid of!
