What is the best way to learn Lore about Golarion?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Hello all!

I am planning on purchasing the Campaign Guide but what other products are good for learning lore?

I would LIKE to buy every product for pathfinder right now, but that is not fiscally possible.

How can my dollar go farthest in acquiring lore? I have bought a few adventure paths but at this juncture I am seeking more background so I can switch my Forgotten Realms campaign to a Golarion campaign. The background info seems a little light in the AP publications.

Many thanks folks!

You could get the free player's guides for RotRL and CotCT. Those would help introduce Varisia. I would concentrate on an area that excited you and build out from that. Varisia has been the most developed area, but if it isn't where you would set your campaign then you might find little information outside of the campaign guide. Darkmoon Vale has also been fairly developed with several modules and a chronicles.

So, you tell us what kind of flavour you want, and we'll tell you which products to buy. We'll even provide links. Consider us your personal shoppers.

EDIT: Welcome to the boards Carl. Someone will be along shortly with cookies!

I would also like to let you know about the The Pathfinder Wiki which contains tons of information on the setting. Almost everything has citations, so if you are interested in a particular topic, you can also see what publications your interests are drawn from, and focus your purchasing power in that direction.

Hope that helps,

BrOp

Wow! TD not only looks like me, but now he's posting like me too! Awesome. Welcome aboard, Carl. Just follow the greenmen to your free downloads...they're good stuff.

Personally, I found the Gazetter to be an awesome source of lore and regional overview. It contains a 10,000 year time line (granted, more entries for the more "recent" years) regional overview of every major country or geographic area (1/2-2 pages per area) overview of all major deities (2-3 paragraphs per deity) as well as information on the "core" races and classes. Much of this info is replicated in the larger campaign setting book, but with the PDF sale, you could get the Gazetter for about $10.

It's not hard. Ya just gotta think like a salad.

You must be deeply rooted, have your head and limbs lifted up high, and have a heart of oak!

WOW! Thanks All!

I have all the free players guides, and I have some of the AP's. THe WIki looks good to, thanks for the info on that.

Is there an area resembling, lets say crusader europe c.1100 AD, or something similar to CORMYR?

GOlarion looks like a world much like FR, where I can have an adventure set in somewhere England like, and also write adventures for something like Emperor Cyrus Persia with satrapies and such.

Again thank you all!

Is the gazeteer one separate book, or is it several supplements?

Not Crusades done Europe necessarily, but there is an ongoing Crusade into the WorldWound.

Which, frankly, how can you get much cooler than armies of Paladins invading a gateway to Hell?

EDIT: Forgot this part, Mendev, a Crusader Theocracy is the place you're looking for.

I'd follow up with Mendev as well for the Cormyr analogue, though Ustalav could also be interesting.

Taldor is meant to be a kind-of Crusader state in decay. Not at war with anyone, just a feel like English knights in a crumbling byzantine empire.

The gazetteer is one book, but if you're already getting the Campaign Setting and you're trying to stretch your money, I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the same information is in the campaign setting.

I'm DYING!

I ordered the Campaign setting from my local gamestore. I know I could have ordered it from the site but I support my game store whenever possible (they REALLY serve me there).

I am reading info on the Golarion wiki but the info there is sparse. The AP are fantastic however, I was only disappointed as a Golarion Noob they did not have more world information.

Are you looking for a well-developed part of the world or a less developed part? If you want an area that has a good bit of support already, you could use Darkmoon Vale. Taldor isn't far away so a knight from Taldor could be adventuring in Andoran.

Mendev may be cool but it hasn't been developed as much beyond a module and what is in the campaign setting (unless I missed something).

So, what is it? More canon or less?

Once you do get the book(s) feel free to create a account and help us flesh it out! Right now it is the work of about a half dozen of us*, and we have over 1250 articles, imagine if more people contributed.

As a community effort, the wiki is only ever as strong as the contributions made by its members. For whatever reason, there are only a handful of people who have contributed on a regular basis with large, useful additions. As long as there are just a few of us working on the wiki, it will never be as good as it can be. So if you'd like to see it as a more thorough resource, drop on by and contribute any way you can!

Beat up random sages and eat their brains.

Aye Dying from impatience :)

I devoured the Rise of the Runelords Players guide and Crimson Throne players guide last night, but that was like a Hungry guy eating a cellery stick, it just made me hungrier.

I like to first learn the well developed areas, so yes MORE canon is good:) I also however like to make the campaign world my own. I first do that by learning the canon and then I manipulate things as I see fit (or run adventures in regions to change them).

Darkmoon Vale looked really cool.

You are all a big help thank you!

Please don't take my comments above as criticism to the Wiki. As a small endeavor thus far it was very useful to me, and a good overview.

When I get material to learn canon I will certainly offer my aid to the Wiki effort.

as far as the wiki is concerned. I think that having less contributors is good. it insures consitency. Also, if i contrivuted, i know i would worry that i put something down that wasn't accurate.

I would say that your best bet is this.

Start with the campaign setting and rise of the runelords to learn about varisia, move onto curse of the crimson throne and guide to korvosa, and effectively move out form there.

The setting material builds outwards on itself, and a lot of the flesh of the campaign setting is in the AP's.

That is why we ask for citation of all facts, if you get it from a book, then both you and we know that it is fact. I know that I, Personally don't have time to write too many articles, but I can fact check, or add more information to another person's articles. Little edits still help. Just make sure you cite your sources.

Hey thanks for the info. on Pathfinder wiki. I have almost everything from Paizo Pathfinder and never knew about this fan site. I knew checking out the boards was a great thing. The people here are always polite and very helpful.

Thanks again.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Another thing that might useful to people new to Golarion is the Community Use Registry, which lists websites dedicated to Pathfinder. Of course, the material contained in the sites listed in this registry is unofficial but once the sites develop they may become invaluable resources to any gaming group playing in Golarion.

Yeah, that is an awesome book! I recommend it heartily to anyone running D&D, not just Golarion GMs. :)
