Run through the list of bad item stereotypes; if any of your items come anywhere near those, chuck 'em.
If you still have a couple left after that - and this is just my own personal opinion - choose the item the does one "really" cool thing over the item that does a bunch of "pretty" cool things. I think it's easier for the judges to see your innovation with a simple item over a complex one. In other words, shoot for gloves of storing over a helm of brilliance.
However, I have absolutely no idea what the judges are going to favor; so Clark, Wolfgang, and Sean could read this and think I'm smoking the crack. Keep that in mind with any advice offered by your fellow board members. =]

Exactly. I dumped those of mine that tried to do too much or which were really just a spell or two inside of an item. One thing almost all of the entries from last year had going was that they didn't just replicate a spell. They did things that couldn't be accomplished under the normal rules. While this makes the pricing and the selection of the base spell interesting, it means the item is much more original. Make sure it's simple, interesting and appealing to somebody that would be looking to spend their gp.
If you're not sure whether you're trying to do too much with one item, answer two questions:
a) Would you want it for that price?
b) Would anybody NOT want it for that price?
If the answer to both is yes, you may have a viable item.

...or you may have create an underpriced munchkin's dream. (I'm just sayin'...!)

...I just don't know which wondrous item to use. I've been sitting on 4 since November. Advice? Tips? Heckling? Random commentary?? Anyone????
Hard to know without specifics, but when I have a serious problem choosing among alternatives (in life) I like to remind myself that it must be because one choice is about as good as another. If there were a big disparity, it wouldn't be a hard choice. When I think of it that way, it's much easier just to pick one, push the button, and move on.

Oh! Oh oh oh!!!! I want the underpriced munchkin's dream! I want it! ~runs with my cheap loot~

Underpricing is bad news. But you know, I think you want to show off the item that appeals to both players and DMs. The one that is both mechanically interesting and packed with flavor. And the one that hits all the judge's tastes and aligns with their experience as designers and publishers.
Nom nom nom, that gets a shot at it. Both Clark and I are pretty well known for having spelled out what failed last year and what works in design generally (see the KOBOLD Guide v2, for instance). Sean is more of an unknown quantity.

Harold's Purple Crayon!
OMG! My son loved that story when he was younger.
Someone should put this on the Gag Item thread...
Hmmm....
Maybe I will.

one thing i noted last night, going over the last 6 items I have to choose from, is that one of them is rather similar to a little-used staple in the DnD/Pathfinder game. If I throw out the name of the artifact, everyoen will recognize it, but I bet it's rarely used.
Anyhoo, one of my items is sort of a better-and-worse version of that artifact (it is still just a wondrous item), so it falls several places behind its more unique fellows.
Google your item names and look over your mountain of RPG sourcebooks. If you stumble on somehting that might be recognized, consider hucking it in favor of an item that no one can compare to.

Still haven't submitted huh? You do know that 'late' entries are just that, late. ;>

I've seen his entries, and he can afford to wait a bit and ponder which to enter. Though I have a favorite.

I'm currently also extremely torn on which item to submit of the two I made.I like them both a lot. My friends aren't helping much either, as they are pretty much split on which item is cooler.
Item I has as main advantage, that it focuses on an ability that often has little impact on PC's and changes it to be far more relevant/dangerous for them . And hypothetically speaking, if it would be accepted; it would tie in extremely well with my villain concept. The main weak point of the item, is that it's pretty much a villain/evil party only item. It's fairly original, although it could be a bit more creative. Finally, it's kind of useless of the creature does not have the abilties the item augments.
Item II has as main advantage, that it is quite creative and has some black humour in it. While the effect it provides isn't THAT unique, the flavour and how it's...''activated'' most likely is. I also like that it can be a bit of a double-edged sword.
Both of them do not seem to fall under the Bad Item Stereotypes and, IMHO, the names are good. Item I has a cool(and appropriate) triple alliteration and Item 2 has an amusingly twisted name. Item 1 is fairly mid-high level, while Item 2 is mostly low-level.
Obviously, I can't go into details too much...but do any of you have any suggestions?
