I don't know who exactly is responsible for the following Map of Golarion. It was last updated in September 2008. (Hope it's still getting updates, but that's beside the point.) This map would be PURRFECT for a direct link / thumbnail / spot on Paizo's home page.
What better way to get people engaged in exploring Golarion (and having easily accessible maps for game play)?
So, what about it??
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Technically, this is a second request, but I'd love a globe depiction of Golarion. It need not be complete off the get go, but it sure would be cool to see how the mapped area accounts for the entirety of the world. (Remember 2nd Editions Forgotten Realms Atlas? Something like that.)

From the accuracy of the national boundaries & city placement, the main map appears to be the version from the Gazetteer, but the country sub-maps seem to be from the Campaign Setting (and include the errors present in those, such as the national boundaries having shuffled west on the Mwangi Expanse map).
Edit:
Interesting, all the maps from the first Adventure Path seem to be present, too. Some of the other maps I presume to be from the modules, but those from the second Adventure Path seem to be absent as of the time of my posting of this.

Yeah, we'd love to know who's responsible for that map as well.
Is this a "someone's in trouble" we'd love to know, or a "someone could have a future at this" we'd love to know?
Not that I know who made it but I have been perusing that map and I love it. There was a link on one of the threads and I made the link a favorite....

Or is it a "someone's in trouble if we can't figure out a decent block of legalese text to add on to ensure protection of our IP while still allowing fans to do stuff supporting our setting, and if so maybe will have a future doing this"?

On a related matter, there were a couple of posters asking about maps and websites on a thread down in the 'Dragon and Dungeon transition discussion' forum, and never seem to have had an official reply on the thread. *link*
Edit:
The most recent posts are over a month old, as of the time of my posting this, however.

I think the answer is obvious here. Other posters have asked about posting Paizo artwork on their sites and have been told not to or to hold off until the website policy was created.

The FRIA was in fact the inspiration for it.

See the About page. New maps don't go up until 2 months after a product is released (or AP ends.) Just haven't had a chance to do CotCT yet. :)

You're going to have to update at some point, I hope, as there were glitches in several of the CS maps, which I'm hoping Paizo will ammend if/when they have the time...
Edit:
You also might to look at your links between the maps of the dungeon levels for the Dungeon under Kaer Maga ('Seven Swords of Sin', I think) since at least one of the 'in map' links seemed to have the wrong 'mouse-over' label on it. (The 'level 3' link in area 25 of the level 2 map is wrongly tagged 'Kaer Maga Dungeon 2'.)
Further Edit:
For some reason, there seems to be a red line between areas 35 and 36, and mousing over area 36 causes a tag to appear 'Kaer Maga Dungeon 3', although clicking does nothing.
Further Further Edit:
Good work so far, though!

Charles, you're of course assuming Paizo isn't going to b@34! slap me for making the atlas. :P
The label is indeed an error, but the red line is part of the map. I assumed it just separated the 2 areas. ;)

I would take the initiative and email them if I were you :)
Paizo has to take steps to protect their IP. Well intentioned fan-sites could lead them to losing the IP on certain aspects of the pathfinder setting, opening up opportunities for less scrupulous publishers to create Golarion based products.

Paizo were nice about Andrew Turner's promotional you-tube effort.
As Chef Slaad urged, email them, confess your sins, and get official forgiveness and approval!

Sigh.
Our community use policy will allow a lot of things, but republishing our maps is not one of those things. This is an especially sticky situation because we're in discussion with a potential licensee about creating an official product that includes similar features, so I'm afraid we have to ask for this to come down.

Cheer up Urza!
As B-slaps go, that was pretty mild. :D
Seriously, I was glad I got a peek before it was gone. You can't keep it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't cool.

Have no fear, I started that long before the whole "guidelines" discussion started. :)

Even if you guys turned the other cheek, I knew that if when you ever did do an official atlas, book or electronic, it'd have to go. I just didn't think so soon. :)

Me too. I'm thinking about continuing to update it for myself until the official one comes out (and hopefully it will see more updates then the Forgotten Realms!)
Who knows, maybe I'll compile it into a CHM. :)

Let's just hope that Paizo moves fast now that they are having fan-friendly third party sites taken down.
By the way, Sir Uzra, beautiful work. I cannot imagine the time and energy you put into this, but it certainly shows.
I'm sorry for having brought attention to it here. I was hoping for the best and got the worst.
That said, Hey Paizo, how about agreeing to Sir Uzra's as a special permit until your third party license is worked out? I'd hate to see such great support for your campaign setting be erased with nothing to step in to its place.

Gentlemen, on both sides, thank you for clarifying both Paizo's position and the status of the work.
Uzra, thank you for your effort and your enthusiasm, as brief as its moment in the spotlight was. It did tell me that I have lots of maps I've not lovingly looked over yet. Thank you for not ranting about 'information wants to be free' or some claptrap.
Josh, Vic, (and by proxy, Lisa) Thank you for being polite and understanding of the enthusiasm outstripping the property concerns, and politely asking him to take it down.
*Group hug!*

I just visited this website after having been recommenced to go there by a number of my friends.
Lo and behold I see a message that Da' Boys at Paizo made 'em take it down.
I thought that Paizo was encouraging gaming and was moving away from WotC "Big Brother" control at all costs syndrome? An effort I hasten to add which is as futile as an attempt to control the WWW itself.
Aren't Paizo trying to encourage interest in their world, if so why are they clamping down on those who make a concerted and highly effective effort to promote it?
Now if the maps were inaccurate or it was a breach of copyright (?) then I might understand this "police action" but it seems (from my brief perusal of the message boards at any rate)that Paizo has yet to give any rejoiner for this "cease and desist order". If there is just cause, then let them justify there actions to the gaming community who supports them, instead of hanging behind this veil of secrecy...
A response will also serve to provided guidelines for those who wish to peruse a similar course of action in the future.
Perhaps someone in authority would care to shed light on this issue.
| Joshua J. Frost |
1. No one was sent a cease and desist. We asked those responsible to take it down.
2. The artwork in question contains both copyrighted and trademarked material owned wholly by Paizo and posting it without permission violates both.
3. We're working on a community use policy that will allow our community to do some things--reposting the entirety of our maps online is not one of them.
4. The argument that "you can't stop piracy, so you might as well not try" should be retyped as "you shouldn't try to protect your trademarks so, by law, your trademarks are no longer yours." We're not playing big brother folks, we're protecting our trademarks. No, I'm not saying the map was piracy.
5. Most companies wouldn't take the time to respond--they'd unleash their lawyers on the offender. We have not.

The message on there was very polite.
He basically said:
He was asked to take it down, no hard feelings
Paizo and Urza were both cool about it, in fact it was only a few minutes after Paizo regretably asked for it to be taken down that it was taken down. The next morning the message was there.
Paizo rocks, The community rocks, I rock...oh wait...I mean Pathfinder Rocks.

You've gotta love a company that will talk it out before heading to court.
Paizo is setting a good example for the entire RPG industry.
That and lawyers don't come cheap!
On a more serious note, I'd like to know how quickly and how seriously Paizo is pushing for a similar (if not 'better') map here.

Paizo asked (in this thread) and I took it down. That simple. I don't need a cease and desist order, I'm not going to fight them, I knew going in that there were one of two possibilities...
1) They'd tell me to stop and I'd miss it and eventually get a nasty note from their lawyer.
2) They'd tell me to stop and I'd see it and stop.
There was indeed the two dream possibilities...
1) They turn a blind eye to it.
2) They'd let me keep working on it with permission or as part of Paizo.com. :)
But like I said, dream possibilities. Anyway, please don't start a fuss over it, I'm not that heart broken over it.
And if we want to be in Wonderland some more... since they know it exists, if something goes wrong with their talks and they still want some kind of digital atlas, they know who's done some work on such already. I'm sure Gary could figure out something for people to purchase from the Paizo store that'd give their account access to the atlas if it were to move onto Paizo.Com. :)

Look, Sebastian, an old lady with a cup of coffee and no warning label. If you're quick you can bump into her arm, make her spill it in her lap, and then help her sue the company.
That's ridiculous! Do you know how many rules of ethics I would have to violate to do that?
Now, my hired hobo friend, that's a different story. He can bump into her arm and I'm blameless. Unless I do something really stupid and publicly post that I hired the hobo for that reason. Thank god these spoiler tags render my confession completely invisible and undetectable...

Pssst. Those weren't sprinkles. They were tranquilizing drugs that helped with the introduction of hypnotic suggestions. Now, whenever you hear the word 'Golarion,' you reach for your wallet. They did the same thing with me.

MAN, THAT SUCKS! I loved this map. As someone who doesn't own the campaign setting book yet ( I do plan on getting it), This is the map I used to get familiar with the world of Golarion.
Good job on that map btw.
