The 18th of Dec through the 9th of Jan I should be pretty free. I know holidays might get in the way, but there should be something in there.

Cool -- let's for sure keep in touch as we get closer to the holidays.

The 'limits of Alter Self' thread reminded me of another thing in last session. The party wanted to get in to talk to the leader of a fellow adventuring group, who was staying at a very nice inn in town. Unfortunately, the inn is owned by a noble they ticked off, and are no longer allowed to enter. Usually they send a message through his subordinates (nicknamed Frick and Frack due to player memory problems), but they are unfortunately out of town.

The players ask 'Frick and Frack can come and go, right?' I respond positively.

The changling druid says "I now look like Frick then."

The ghaele eladin says "Then I now look like Frack."

Hero points for both of them coming up with it at the same time. It made my day.

Well, I suppose Frick and Frack are better than what my first group came up with. Red One and Red Two. *rolls eyes*

Hey Derek? You asked for it.

Kirth, to explain, Derek suggested posting your rules to the Den. It's about what I expected.

Grand Lodge

Hey TriOmegaZero

If you are looking for another player for Pathfinder I can play every other weekend. I rotate weekends so that I can take care of FAMILY stuff. If this is cool with you let me know....

Well, yeah. If you ask a plumber how to make a better screwdriver, he's exactly right to suggest that you buy a wrench -- because you don't do plumbing with a screwdriver. The thing is, I agree with all the comments made there, and would implement them immediately if I were running a hard-core hunter-killer campaign.

The rules I wrote absolutely suck for that sort of thing.

Well, I'd invite you to tonight's game, but I don't think an hour is enough time for you to get there. Send me an e-mail at triomegazero at yahoo with your number and we can talk about it.

Also, you are aware I game in Austin, unlike the rest of the gang here? If you're in Houston, Kirth could use another player for Monday nights.

Kirth: point well taken.

Yeah, apparently Frank's daddy wanted to beat up Ernie's daddy at one point. So if you're not playing rocket launcher tag, and you have any tip to 1e anywhere (or 007, or any old school game - I still want to be able to die during character creation a la Traveller...) he's going to hate it.

TOZ, I think posting the classes, instead of the house conventions, first might have worked better.

I used to love that!

I was trying to post it all at on e but the damn board wasn't letting me. Plus I had to get down to Austin to run my game.

houstonderek wrote:

I disagree. Our house rules just contain some minor crutches for the warriors; they still become caddies -- that's inevitable in a game with wish spells -- but just not quite as fast. To fix them you'd need to give fighters a bonus to AC, attacks, damage, and saves equal to maybe double their class level, flight, regeneration, high SR against hostile spells only, and the ability to fire tactical nukes out of their asses. And that's just a start.

We haven't actually gone there, just given them options to stretch out the game from 10 levels long to hopefully 14. (Those numbers aren't totally arbitrary; the highest-level 1e adventures used to be "for character levels 10-14," and some classes only had 14 or 15 levels.)

Some decent feedback on skills, although each useful observation is buried at the bottom of a pail of expletive shit. Adjusting sailing DCs and revising Stealth, for example, were things I'd meant to get to eventually and blew off until now (both were copied and pasted more or less directly from the PRD and I hadn't gotten around to playing with them).

I've also taken all the Craft, Knowledge, and Profession skills and tagged them as "Secondary Skills." You get one free rank in a secondary skill per level; you can purchase additional ranks normally. This is to encourage people to learn skills that aren't necessarily immediately applicable to killing things and taking their stuff, without feeling like it was a total ripoff.

Ooooh...

Cadogan just got scarier...

Why, because his Perform (gigolo) ranks are now free? Streetwise isn't a Knowledge (X) skill anymore, btw...

I never had streetwise as a knowledge skill. And I was thinking about some ranks in acting...

...and craft poison...

...and I'll use some combo of knowledge to at least have a shot of figuring some stuff out...

Those are some of the things I had in mind, when I made this change. Another example: in 1e my friend had an assassin character whose cover was that she was a member of the Royal Ballet (using the old "pick one secondary skill" rule). In 3.X, you can't max out Perform (dance) without hosing yourself, though.

Wow. Frank is sort of that disgusting underbelly of the world that most people try and forget exist. I have to imagine that it's an act, or that he's seriously depressed. Or both.

Oh, that's cool. I've always felt like there were some particularly dwarven skill sets that Agun didn't have just because it's important to max out Spellcraft, and I like his character concept to go really deep into the various Knowledges.

Let me elaborate, as the language in my post was unclear, that we're talking 1 skill point per character level -- not 1 rank in each/all of the skills listed.

Andostre wrote:

That's his comedy schtick, I think; he has a big fan base. He also actually has a good grasp of game mechanics that work at high levels, but the problem is that he's so busy looking for things to put down that he's happy to selectively misrepresent and/or ignore about 95% of the stuff in order to keep his routine going. So sifting through his rants for useful feedback is a fairly large undertaking.

Kirth Gersen wrote:

No, I understood. I'm already trying to max out Spellcraft and selected Knowledges. I was thinking using your secondary skill points to at least not be ignorant of Engineering, Appraising, or Mushroomology or something. I'll have to look at what he's lacking the most and see what's dwarf-like that fits his personality.

Andostre wrote:

As a mountain dwarf, it might be handy to max out Profession (Mining) -- remember that also gives you everything that Knowledge (Dungeoneering) and stonecunning used to in 3.5/PF.

I thought I had already said Mushroomology above. :)

Okay, seriously: I think I have a healthy amount in that skill. I won't know until I look again at his sheet.

Andostre wrote:

Yeah, I'd throw that into Profession (mining) as a freeby. You are now a trained mycologist. ;)

Kind of like when my wife watered the plants the other week and proudly declared, "I'm a horticulturist now!"

TOZ, last night Auric wrestled a greased pig.

Well, it was a wild boar that had fallen into a Grease spell.

Still, it was obscene.

Andostre wrote:

Good work, Auric! You provided dinner for Agun, whose cholesterol levels were getting dangerously low.

Sounds like you guys went hog wild... :)

Just a quick heads-up: looks like no game the week of the 18th or the 25th. Possibly November 1st, if people want to play then!

You and your priorities.

Andostre wrote:

How can one play the game without drinking beer? And buying beer requires money, which in turn requires work. So you might say the game is my top priority, which is why there's no game for 2 weeks.

What? It makes perfect sense it my head!

Liberty's Edge

Pfft. I'll pawn my DVD player for beer. No need to scoot off to Andrews or some other god-forsaken open air meth lab so we can game!

Grand Lodge

You boys and your addictions. :P

Back from the swamps of Louisiana -- if you guys want to play tomorrow, I might be able to set it up. If not, hopefully Nov 1st is still a go.

Liberty's Edge

I'm down.

If only I could be there instead of here fighting this hydra of a network. :/

Cool (although Agun's bard/cleric friend from the university fills much the same role, so you guys might want to swap out one or the other).

I won't be able to make it tonight, sorry. Already planned on gaming not being an option, tonight.

And if Derek wants to run a cleric NPC, that sounds fine to me. I'd rather not run two spellcasters.

TriOmegaZero wrote:

Start cutting off heads!

(Note to self: create a Hydra NPC for some future purpose and name it "Gordian" or something else that references that Greek myth.)

Andostre wrote:

Understood. Hopefully we'll all be open next week. (P.S. This gives me an extra week to update HMM to our homebrew rules... ogre fighters are MEAN now!)

Andostre wrote:

For the next adventure, I'd debated including Jack and Siodra as backup -- Jack is absurdly easy to play, being, mechanically, nothing but a bunch of combat numbers -- and Siodra, using the new sorcerer rules, can pretty much be relegated to going "Pew! Pew! Pew!" every round, with an occasional spell thrown in for variety. So if Derek runs Cadogan and his cleric buddy, and you play Agun and Jack, we have a pretty complete party (rogue, cleric, wizard, barbarian), and Siodra can play a support role as needed.

Derek, Andostre, are we on for Monday?

Liberty's Edge

I'm free Monday.

Silver Crusade

Hey Derek. I'm in the Pasadena area if that's not too far away for ya, and would like to game some time. I'm planning on running some Society stuff about twice a month, maybe more depending on free time. Send me a message at drake_masters@juno.com

Yeah, sounds great. I'll be out of town Monday, Nov. 8th, though.

Great! See you tomorrow.

Unless something gets switched around at work, I'll probably also not be available the 8th.
November 1, 15, 22, 29 should all be good for me.

Liberty's Edge

Bump. No need to fall to the archives. :-)

@Joseph, been busy (have to move, stuff like that), so sorry I haven't e-mailed you yet. Mine is hatheg at hotmail dot com if you want to get the ball rolling...
